Just trying out a Vanilla preist with standard artifacts. A lucky relatively early find of Haradekket really makes melee against orcs and such reasonable one SPs run out.

Was astounded to see a Balance Dragon Scale Mail dropped by a simple Cave Orc around dungeon level 32. Unfortunately, it's not actually that useful right now what with -2 speed from encumberance and Thalkettoth actually having the marginally more useful (right now) rAcid. Might come in useful later, though.

Of course, this means I'll die very shortly...

Found Godly Insights which has helped a lot, detection-wise. Also found a !oExperience which at level 29 was good for two more levels. It was getting too boring around dlvl 40, so went towards level 60. Reached L35 by finding yet another !oExperience and by killing targets of opportunity along the way, mostly Ancient Dragons.

Thanks for the advice, fizzix. After posting the previous comment I looked at a little spoiler info and realized that the ancient dragons actually don't have that many HP, and so aren't really that dangerous (when alone!) when you single-resist their element. I tested out on a couple of Ancient White Dragons with double-resist (from spell Res Heat&Cold spell) and they went down easily enough. Usually had to blink a couple of times if I wanted to finish them off OoD, but now that I have the Trident of Ulmo, they'll go down easily enough in melee.

Since that last post Teleport Other has gone from 20% fail to 0% fail. That obviously changes things a lot!

I happened to find some Seeker Arrows of Acid and with Bard the damage display says 750 per hit (... which is insane, but I digress.). Assuming 50% of the arrows hit, I should have enough ammo to finish him off.

When fighting Sauron with ranged weapons, what is the best place for it? A corridor? An open room? Point-blank range in an ASC?

You were right. That Acid branded ammo sure did make short work of Sauron.

I chose to fight him in the moat around one of those "interesting rooms" (checkerboard pattern).

He did go a little nuts with summoning (roughly every 3-5 actions was a summon), so I was forced to maneouver a little bit around the moat. Fortunately he was faster than his own summons, so every time he summoned I stepped around the corner until he'd overtaken them. Once he'd overtaken them I just stepped back into view and started firing again. Even so, there were a few troublesome summons that we TeleportOther'ed from around corners.

There were exactly two occasions that I needed to heal -- once due to a Mana Storm which took me to ~225HP and the second time when I was at 595 HP (Sauron was almost dead at this point, but I thought I'd better be safe than sorry).

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about Morgoth. I don't even have a launcher for the Bolts of Slay Evil, so I'll probably be forced to melee. It might be a little easier since I can (as you say) just fight on a RoP in a *Destruction* zone and Banish Evil if he summons.

I'll wait till tomorrow, though. Thanks for the advice!

It took two attempts:

I had to abort the first attempt when I realized that I hadn't taken *any* CCW for curing Stun. Luckily I hadn't spent any consumables yet, so it didn't end up costing me anything.

The second attempt: Followed this basic plan: whenever Morgoth summoned anything dangerous I'd Banish Evil or TeleportOther (depending on FoV). Whenever I was below 700HP I healed (using either Heal or Healing depending on just how low). Other than that it was just straight up melee with an occasional Rune of Protection sprinkled in there. Oh yeah, drank the occassional CCW to cure stunning.

I think I used a total of two !oRestoreMana and a few CCW.

After I found Bladeturner and The One Ring, I was kind of tempted to see if I could find Feanor (just to, ahem, "round out" the gear), but I wanted to win with active turns <100K, plus that'd mean having to identify countless leather boots. It would also mean the possibility of death (though perhaps remote).

Clairvoyance really makes finding gear extremely easy. Of course some luck is still required, but with standarts you mostly know the "interesting" base item types.

Still... probably the luckiest character I've ever played. (Though I haven't played much Vanilla, maybe it's just more generous.)
