The level increase also means that I'm able to wield a shield now; two immunities! [Even if they are not the ones I would have liked; Oh well.]

The other find of note, truly silly: Wrath of God. That was a nice $25K, but I remember how long it took my paladin to find one...

Oops. I think logging in made this appear to be a different character.

Mimics went OK, nothing interesting but clvl22.

Tengus easy as expected. Logrus master got stunned and never did anything dangerous. So far so good...

Didn't farm the Tower - but I did find a quartz vein in the Sting quest, and managed to leave it to last then wake it up. (Thanks for the idea, Chris!) So that should be the end of gold worries for a while. I have been buying up ID supplies, as can be seen, but probably should dump them at home if I am going to continue taking side quests. Tower just finished, about to go practice in the killing fields, I think.

[clvl 29, Killing fields]

Slowly farming Dawn Warriors..

In killing fields. Moronified in the Sting quest when I saw a star vampire :-( - will need to try to fix that..

On 3.6.2010 14:24 chris wrote:
You can fix that at Zul of course. But, unfortunately, once you enter Angband, you will be stuck with being a moron. The only way to remove the mutation at that point will be !NewLife.

Only Day 4? You are embarrassing me!

On 3.6.2010 15:36 ewan wrote:
Just means that you're more patient than I :). And obviously significantly better equipped; given than I have no speed and no healing yet, I may need to delay a little!

Levelling nicely in Killing Fields. The Amber stealth is key to controlling and avoiding using any resources, and so far I have remembered to clear all the mines - I hate those ^&*$ Time bombs!

First potion of Self Knowledge in the Old Castle. Life 91/100: yuck. And WIS is 18/130, STR 18/120, but DEX/CON are both 18/90 - not terrible, not great. Maybe I should go for the Iron Mask life re-roll, if opportunity arises?

On 4.6.2010 06:44 ewan wrote:
Also in Castle: potion of DEX for 6 attacks. And an oddity: the Phial of Galadriel, which I already have (but never bothered to ID). Definite bug!

On 4.6.2010 16:32 ewan wrote:
Amber! And also Fingolfin, both in the Old Castle. Donning Amber costs me my 6th blow, but with luck I may find some stat potions one day to fix that, and it is finally a piece of kit with some resistances...

I would like to switch in Thror and Fingolfin - but that pushes my weight over the armour balance limit. Hmm.

On 4.6.2010 16:52 ewan wrote:
Hmm. Leave the Old Castle at clvl 35. I really need to have Herbal Healing, which doesn't even kick in until 40. And I got Shiva's Jacket as a reward... but that too is too heavy. Hmm.

On 4.6.2010 17:16 ewan wrote:
On the good news front, though, stunning is really kicking in (a pun that still entertains me). Titans in the Old Castle and now the Arena just wander around confused.

Of course even if I do win, by that time Chris will have posted seventeen more winners :-). Good grief..

Well, starting to feel plausible: just crept into Eric's stronghold and knocked him off, with the monk stunning meaning that he barely got an action (and no curse, either). Amusingly, he's my first wanted unique!

And that leaves only Bull Gates and DQ2. Then I think I am going to head on in and assume that I will get to clvl 40 and hence herbal healing before things get too scary..

On 6.6.2010 06:01 ewan wrote:
Oh - surprised myself by surviving the spawning pits. Vast amounts of sneaking and shooting steel bolts, plus two of the very few speed potions found thus far. Queen Ant was annoying, but nothing else too scary. Loving stoneskin; really seems to reduce incoming damage a *lot*.

On 7.6.2010 01:09 ewan wrote:
OK, going in after finishing up all the sidequests - really had fun with Eric and his crew, almost none of whom did anything before being stunned. Failed to find an equipment shuffle I actually like; of the many gaping flaws, poison resistance may be the biggest but others include being encumbered, missing dark/sound/nether, and still being unable to wear Shiva's jacket (which I am toting). Probably I could have optimised equipment better - I have a ton of good individual pieces - but O well; I am feeling scummy enough already. Time to do or die.

On 7.6.2010 01:12 ewan wrote:
Plan - ha! -is to cover missing gaps with a ring of power or two. I figure that the muscle ring is better than my speed ring, and maybe at some point I will get the palantir, which might allow for switching cloaks and hence not nerfing WIS if/when I switch armour. Hmm - maybe.

On 7.6.2010 01:12 ewan wrote:
Feanor helped, I think - found in DQ2 - so at least I should be OK for speed now..

I figure I can go as slowly as needed, because I create food; and given that I have not even come close to maxing stats, I imagine I will hang out at some point and try to do so, which should also be a big help.

I have no idea how the uber-scumming is possible without dieing of total boredom :). Macros, I guess; but trying to max stats from BM potions would have me giving up, so I have to live with this...

Go get 'em! Your stats are fine ... Congrats on doing *all* the quests. That is quite frankly ... amazing!

On 7.6.2010 02:53 ewan wrote:
I got lucky a couple of times, i think. The logrus master was stunned at a stage where that was pretty rare, rather than the norm, and the spawning pits took forever and avoidance of anything too overly nasty in summons (that was the one that surprised me most).

Cloning pits had a pack of Us as random monsters, but they were stunned pretty easily; the ants always annoy me but they did not get into any summoning wars, so not a big problem. And at the end, as long as I got to hit first it felt like nothing could oppose me - yeah, overconfident, I know! Eric's Stronghold was just *fun*.

Anyway, committed now!

Welcome to the fold, and nice going so far! Just wondering why you aren't wearing the jacket of Shiva's Avatar--is it a weight issue?

You can also inscribe items with "%all" with displays all of that items attributes in shorthand afterwards. Not saying you have to by any means, but it makes glancing at an item's attributes really easy.

With regards to Stair Building (Creation?)--I usually play 1.7.0 and just recently found a working version of 1.7.2, but I believe it has a chance every time you cast it to create either an up or down staircase. That may not be the case for 1.6.2, but that's been my experience with every Nature caster I've played since I started with version 1.0.9 or something.

Good luck, and looking for that Ripe Old Age post!

Yes, I lose balance if I don Shiva's jacket. I don't really understand the relationship between weight possible and level, although I remember reading a formula some tie back, but I did notice that chris' recent monk was able to do so at some point, hence toting it. I did leave Fingolfin at home on te grounds that it was just too heavy vs. Cambeleg.

And I am sure that Stair Creation normally works that way as intended - this was just in response to a query from chris about how it worked w/ an Ironman Downward character.

"Diving only" affects the spells to I think thats why the spell only creats downstairs. Good luck!

Clvl 42: aha! Call Sunlight gives whole-level enlightenment, including objects? *That* should speed things up, perhaps. Time to dive (dlvl47 now; probably go hang out at 80 or so?).

Hang on - not really any such thing as diving here, is ther?? Oh well.

On 7.6.2010 23:45 chris wrote:
Actually, there's no such thing as hanging out! You might want to start clearing levels around DL50 or so to pick up things like !Healing and to clear out uniques. I found it really hard to hold my depth until I was ready in this build. Go too deep, and there is no backing up!

Was playing with a mimic pit for their summons, milking a few xp. Didn't think about the effects of being cursed. Now half my kit is doing Bad Stuff (tm). Oops. Hope I find a Remove Curse scroll soon..

Clvl46, d(r)iving down. I have no clue how chris does it so fast :-). I am now clearing levels, but stat potions remain few and far between.

Which leads to the latest dilemma: I am now able to don Shiva's armour, giving me an extra blow and ~70 extra damage per round, but at the cost of WIS dropping down to 18/178 and about 50 fewer sp, as well as reduced stealth. Tough call.

Hmm. I wonder whether there are any WIS light sources - does the Palantir have that?

Both Palantir and Jewel give +3 WIS. Palantir also gives ESP, Jewel also gives +3 Speed.

Thanks. Dworkin did not drop the Jewel, alas; the Palantir would be ideal, allowing me to switch cloaks.

Just found Iron Mask, dropped by Dio Brando, but the switch to Vampire looks as though it would cost me too much awkwardness in re-balancing equipment to make the life re-roll worthwhile.

That's better!

Palantir from Brand on dlvl63. Finally able to swap kit around and include Shiva's Jacket also: important stats now maxed, 9 blows per round and Crushing Blows are happening frequently.

Losses include reflection and some stealth - I was enjoying the uber-stealth, but feel sufficiently powerful (yeah, I know, over-confidence!) to be less stressed about that now; and I finally have a decent set of resistances, lacking only Dark and Sound. Have not had much luck in collecting healing potions, but have also not needed to expend any yet other than losses to cold attacks.

BIG BIG new worry, though - down to one copy of book 2. This was something I did not consider when entering Angband, and I'm way too deep to get replacements - I have destroyed probably 50 copies of book 3 - so now I am having to be annoyingly anal about storing books away whenever fire-users are nearby. Grr.

Level 50 from Tselakus. In curse trouble again, and the curse on Cambeleg appears to have given it an AFC; not quite sure whether that will go away if I find a *RC* scroll or not, but it is worrying!

Still powering through without real difficulty recently. A couple of Amberite curses - but no paralysation - have made me glad for Teleportation scrolls, but otherwise no close calls yet.

Yey! Narya!! I can stop worrying about that Book2...

The AFC, on the other hand, is beginning to be tiresome. Being hit by that just after knocking off Julian, so that I got two doses of draining/plane of raw mana/summons/etc was not fun; down to ~70hp before I got to do anything!

Posing briefly; my first ring of extra attacks>1, but it only takes effect if I remover the shield I've been wielding. Will be worthwhile for the endgame niques but probably not before then, is my guess. This is berserked, blessed, and hero'd also; still, 1296 damage/round plus the stunning is not too shabby!

On 14.6.2010 16:27 ewan wrote:
Some good things: finally a scroll of *RC* which _DOES_ remove the AFC generated by being heavily cursed. Phew.

And I was moronified, took the risk just now on a potion of New Life... and gained 40 hp! Hosed my stats - DEX now maxes at 18/80, STR and WIS both at 18/100 - but not so badly that it matters, and I also removed the 'subject to cowardice' that eldtritch horrors had given me. I expect that I'll get hit again, but for now I am happy!

Bored now, alas, and really need to go do some work! So I am going to dive as fast as possible and see what happens. Fed up of being eldritch-cursed by demon pits, too! I think I managed to encounter every unique on my wanted list in Angband, which is vaguely amusing given how difficult it is to track them down usually...

Here we go for the bottom...

In the end, that was... easy. Very glad that I toted the teleport scrolls all the way down, sure; but otherwise my limited healing was easily more than enough, I hit hard enough, and Nature buffs to AC and resistance were great. Plus for an Ironman character, Stone Tell was critical and the excellent detection spells really made play more comfortable.

I think I am a little burned out with so much Heng play over the past couple of weeks, though (I know, nothing like the output of the Heng masters here!). I'll post the win dumps of my other two Heng guys, retire 'em all off, and maybe go see what's cooking in DaJ or the new ToME (if and when they get a build I can use under Leopard..).
