Started up a monk (never played one in Heng before). Wasn't going to dump him till Chlvl 35 or so but just thought I'd share what he got from his scroll of acquirement from the Arena.
Took it to top level of Dragon's Lair and he got a Broadsword 11d5 which was of course "Chainsword". What makes this funny for me is that my last character was a Samurai and never found a decent blade. Also the character previous to that was a ninja and he found Murumasa - sigh....
In any case - My Draconian craft Monk seems to be going ok. He got a nifty small metal shield from Hagen which has res:Disenchant and +2 to constitution as well as boosting to hit/damage (+2,+4) and stunning kicks in against most opponents making him quite lethal in hand to hand.
I'm not taking him to the Dragon's Lair as I don't have any real detection capablitites at the moment.
I can see why Kinvictory likes craft monks so much and I guess it'll get evern better when I find the 3rd and 4th spellbooks.
On 3.9.2005 08:36 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: ps - I'm just posing with "Chainsword" - obviously I'm not using it - :-)

Ok I relented. I know have 2 rods of detection + an Amulet of the Magi with ESP Dragons so I figure I should be able to scum the top of the lair (still iffy I reckon but we'll see if it's worth it). No res Nether or Nexus so I'll have to be careful.

Once you have that, the game is much easier, with Telepathy, Stone Skin, Resistance, Haste, etc. Best chance for the book is probably a Great Storm Wyrm, or perhaps Bile Wyrm ... but you will probably need more speed to take those (How come I'm the only Hengband player to always get a staff of speed?? Mysterious :-)

Second trip to lair netted Thranduil which has alleviated my concerns somewhat (Telepathy, +2 Wis). From an Ancient Green no less. Yes the main reason for the Lair is to try and speed up the game from here (I'm pretty slow - but more so in this instance as I've lost the last 12 or so characters @chlvls 28-35. He also managed to knock off Smaug (levelled to 31 in the process and I (quaffed a potion of speed for that obviously) and he was carrying Trumps of Doom and Excorcism and Dispelling so I know it's just a matter of time now.
On 5.9.2005 02:37 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: chlvl 32 - Dragon's Lair 60
Tangled with a Great Venom Wyrm and got it down to 3 stars but I had just cast satisfy hunger prior to the battle so I get getting gorged status which kept knocking my speed down to +3 (from hasted +13 via potion) and then the Wyrm would knock me substantially again. At one stage it got a double move and knocked me down to 8hps so I decided discretion was the better part of valour - I quaffed my last healing potion and then teleported it away.
After that I scummed the towns (about 8 round trips) and this netted me a Ring of Damage +15 and 1 staff of speed (Reaver I don't know how you get so many).
Went back to Dragon's Lair and knocked off Rogrog and his retinue but he didn't drop anything good. Staff of speed definitely makes a difference as I also knocked of Itangast who was partying with the Trolls with relative ease.
No 3rd spellbook yet. Oh well - I'll just keep looking.

Ah thankyou Storm Wyrm No 3 - Notes of Acting Master acquired. Now just have to raise my Wisdom some more (52% fail on Haste Self and 55% fail on Resistance - still things should look up from here. Also acquired a set of Gauntlets of Power (only +1) but they have res:light so the only base resist I don't have in curent kit is Poison but I have a swap and or spell for that. Still - I'm going to wait till lvl 35 to do cloning pits so I don't have to juggle gear or cast spell for it.
On 6.9.2005 18:53 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 35 - I'm off to the cloning pits to get my boots!
Level 35 and I think i'm ready for the cloning pits. Every resist covered except for Nether/Nexus so I have rings for those. Now that I've got poison intrinsically I can go back to wielding the shield "trollism" which has pluses to damage and to hit and +2 Con as well as Res:Disenchant.
I'm taking alot of stuff (maybe too much) but I only have one healing potion. Still I think I'll be ok.
Screen dump of what I'm taking linked above.
Let's see what happens...
On 7.9.2005 01:09 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 35 - Cloning Pits done.
That was one of the easiest runs I've had...
One Gachapin telported away as well as one "It" - but they didn't put up too much of a fight once I got to them. Everything else fell pretty quickly - no muss no fuss.
6 Artifacts and two randarts. Only thing that made it into my kit straight away was faramir as well as Shiva's boots of course. (Light of Yeduson, Thror, Black Arrow of Bard, Nimthanc, Scythe Avavir, & Faramir).
I had to destroy a bunch of stuff as I forgot to take the Stone of Lore with me and I only had one staff of perception.
Only thing missing now is res nether but I carry a ring for that. Prefer to have it as swap as my damage goes from 260 to 205 if I put it on.
On with the show...
On 7.9.2005 05:32 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 35 - Vault done - back to the Dragon's Lair
Yeah I know - dumping him again so soon.
Reason being I've made an equiment change and I'd like peoples opinions please.
Basically I bought a padded Elven Armour which raises my stealth from Superb to Chaos and also has Chaos res. I've swapped this in for Thalketoth and replaced the ring of Chaos res with Nether.
What this now means is that I've swapped Nether res hole for Darkness res hole....
I'm carrying a ring of Light and Darkness res as a swap but I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing? What do you guys/gals think? What's more important better stealth/lower AC with Darkness uncovered or worse stealth/higher AC with Nether uncovered? I'm planning on going back into the Dragon's Lair before I attempt the Castle Quest (never done it before so any advise for that would be welcome as well - Can I take it now for instance?).
Oh - should mention that I bought a potion of Con at BM and then the vault quest (with no real tough monsters - Novice Rangers, Novie Priests, 2 mature red dragons, one dark young of Niggurath , Trolls , Orcs etc) provided another one as well as a potion of wisoom - the two things I was hoping to improve soon - yippee
On 7.9.2005 17:40 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: As long as you have rBlindness, rDark isn't that bad a hole to have. A lot more monsters use nether than darkness in attacks and, IMO, nether tends to hit harder. The big caveat to that, though, is that you have to be VERY careful around the few darkness wielders out there, mostly because of Jack of Shadows, but there are a few others as well.
On 8.9.2005 00:57 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 37 - Dragon's Lair 60-62
Level 36 was a quantum leap for this character. He got a potion of Augmentation and his double attack became usable (went from 73% to 25% failure). Used that to knock of Niddhog and some other stuff (although it cost him 2 healing and 2 restore mana's).
Going along happily at the moment although he just knocked of Jack of Shadow and he didn't drop his cloak - just "Quickthorn". The cloak would've been really handy. He spent practically the entire battle stunned. 6 blows - 340 damage with a couple of double attaccks and he didn't stand a chance :-). I've gone back to thalketoth as it gets me an extra blow and I'm now carrying the nether ring to patch that hole when required although it does mean my damage drops to 274 when I do that.
I've also acquired Hammerhand but am sticking with Thranduil for + to wisdom and telepathy which I think is more important.
On 8.9.2005 01:00 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Elliott,
LOL - I posted my update before reading your comment. Jack of Shadows is a moot point now LOL. He got me back though by not dropping his cloak.
I reworked my eq for more damage but it now means my res hole is Nether.... Oh well - tread carefully....

No dump update (at work)...
But last trip was Amutet Central.
Killed Bull Gates, Judge Death, Shuten-ojui (whatever his surname is) - you know the King of Ogre Mountain, Venom Wyrm, Ice Wyrm etc.....They dropped Charmed Pendant, Collar Harness of the Hell, the Inro of blah (can't remember the last bit) and a Potion of New Life. I think Judge Death was summoned by an Illusionist??? or it could've been one of the Ogre Mages.
I'm taking the Collar Harness with me to swap in for uniques etc once I've mostly or completely cleared levels as the damage boost is quite nice and the Res:Nether is perfect. However I'm still taking the Nether ring with me as I don't want to aggravate at the start of a new level. I'm also taking the Charmed Pendant as a swap item as the Activation is great for my mana hungry craft monk. Man I've got to decide what to leave at home now...
On 8.9.2005 16:26 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 38 - Old Castle Quest complete - Yippee
The good news is I completed the Old Castle Quest the first time I've ever set foot in it.
The bad news is that I didn't know there would be so much loot. I should've brought the Stone of Lore with me. Oh well let's start destroying stuff. (see screenshot).
The cleanout was troublefree. All the titans didn't get to summon because I brought 15 scrolls of Monster Confusion and they spent the entire time confused and stunned. The Enchantress summoned twice (AMHD and Young Green D) both of whom fell very quickly. Toughest challenge by far was the room with the 4 Raal's tome's of Destruction. Took 2 healing potions but I employed the "Black Tortoise" stance (reflection) and double resistance and just plowed in to the middle of the room where they proceeded to do a bunch of damage to themselves whilst I picked them off with my reduced 4 blows due to my stance. 2 healing potions I think was pretty cheap. Apart from that I used 20 CCW's, 2 Potions of Resistance and 9 charges from my staves of speed.
Oh well now for the cleanup and hopefully my nice new Shiva's armour will be the right size...
On 8.9.2005 17:37 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 38 - Put the Jacket on....and it fits :-)
Hmmm - it feels nice. Only real thing of note gained from the Old Castle was Belthronding (with Disenchant res - might come in hand later).
Wearing Jacket leaves Dark res open so ring being carried to swap in if needed. Currently my ring slots are just there to cover res holes so hopefully some gear will turn up so I can use a damage multuplier and a ring of speed (when one turns up).
At this stage I think I'm ready to dive in the Dragons Lair but I might just pop in to Angband 50 and do the random quest there first. 7 blows for 360 damage + double attack failure rate of 18% should be workable.
Monks rule!
On 12.9.2005 02:51 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 41 - Dragons Lair 72 and cleared up to Black Reaver in Arena...
No dump as I'm at work but thought would provide brief update.
Have dived to the bottom of DL and have been killing Uniques there for a while ( Nyogtha, Brand, Rindaldo, Narse, Eibra, Ansalom, Rhan Tegoth??? etc etc). Only met one Unique who I had to bail on (Dio Brando - he summoned a bunch of high level vampires when he was down to 4 stars - May've been able to do it but decided to wait till I was 100% sure).
No real change in kit. The only thing I'm using now is the Torque of Borormir (for the damage boost). Currenlty in my Dungeoneering kit I get 7 blows for 457 damage which, with Double Attack when required, has proved good enough.
I took on some more of the beasties in the Arena (got past the Shambler though he did get me down to @350 hps). Obdiously for the Arena I've been changing my gear to maximise damage and leaving res holes that don't matter against the particular opponent - so I'ts on with the Collar, Ring of Slaying, Ring of Damage, Hammerhand, Take off shield put on Thror - result is +100 hps (roughly) and 8 blows for @570 damage (I think - can't remember but you get the idea).
I've got some stuff stored at home that I'd like to swap in (Mirrro being one - Telepathy + refection and nice boost to Wis) but I just can't work it without leaving more res holes open at the moment. What I need is the Jewel of Judgement, a nice cloak wit h res:Dark and then I can free up my ring slots for damage. Have not seen a speed ring yet either - what's up with that?
I think most of the Dragon Uniques are dead now (except for Tiamat, Bahamut and Shooting Star). Is there no Guardian for Dragon's Lair - been there a long time on lvl 72 and there doesn't seem to be one.
In any case I'm diving through the Mountain now to kill Shooting Star. Why? Because I feel like it.... :-)
On 12.9.2005 18:10 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Looks like Jack of Shadows didn't prove to be a problem after all. I'm impressed you got past the Shambler without IMLightning. Its breath attacks hit HARD.
I think Rings of Speed have a really deep native depth in Hengband (I'd guess 70 but I really have no idea). So, if the average level of the monster you kill and the dungeon level is 70 or greater, then they stop being OOD. So you're probably not going to find one on an ancient dragon or even a Hell Wyrm anytime soon, unless you're in late Angband.
Once you get into the LATE game, they start turning up reasonably often, but for me that doesn't seem to happen until I'm fighting Warp Demons down at Angband 94 or so.
Good luck.
On 13.9.2005 19:27 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 42 - Angband 69
Still powering along. Now using Carlamas as my amulte for the hp boost which means my damage is reduced a bit but 427 seems to be enough at the moment and the hps are handy.
Gave up on the Volcano early as I decided I was ready to dive in Angband to lvl 70 or so. Successfully cleared all random quest monsters up to lvl 62 without too many problems. I still have the res hole for Darkness so I'm still carrying a ring of Light and Darkness to cover it - sigh.....
No real close calls to speak of so far with this character. So far it's pretty much been "sit in the wall and stun your opponent till they die". I'm guessing when I get to opponents that Dispel Magic I may have a few more problems.
Am diving in Angband in the hopes of filling res hole so eq shuffle can happen and maybe find a nice ring of speed and/or extra attacks.
Hopefully 4th Craft Book will turn up before I die of Old Age. I've found 3 Hellfire Tomes, I Necronomicon and the Crusade one as well.
Heres hoping - :-)

No dump update as I'm at work.
Just hanging around on lvl 75 knocking off uniques. Never been this far in Heng so don't know if I'm ready for lvl 76 random quest.
I should probably turn off Auto-Scum but I almost feel like it's cheating to turn it off and on during the game (I know it's stupid, no real reason for it, I just feel funny about it). The upshot is that everytime I recall in there's at least 2 or 3 Uniques + intereresting monsters (ie dangerous). I'm probably not playing conservatively enough as I don't have a stockpile of Healing (or *Healing* or Life etc) - when I see something I just have to kill it and if that means burning through potions then I tend to do it - I know I'm going to pay for this later.
In any case tangled with Dio Brando for the second time and this time I killed him but Redwing is verly lucky to be alive (should probably have died). I used up my one Healing potion while fighting him and then he summoned various high level V's when he was down to 4 stars. I didn't feel like aborting so I used my 2 potions of Restore Mana to enable me to double attack him to death over the next couple of rounds but at this point he double (or triple) moved and took me down to 90 hps - Yikes. At this point he had 1 star left so I did something very foolish - I chanced my arm on Zapping my lone rod of Healing (it fails sometimes ) and it worked so I was back up to 390 hps - Dio Brando died next round and I then destructed the summoned V's away as there didn't seem to be any decent loot dropped.
Lots of other Uniques have been taken care of ( Saruman, Fundin, Mario, etc etc). No interesting drops however. I'm deep enough now that my damage output is a bit below par. I really need to free up my ring slots so I can dish out more damage - Crimson + a nice cloak (with res Nether/Dark/Chaos) is what's required as well as Cambeleg and/or Fingolfin.
I'm also carting too much stuff with me.... Need to refine this as I don't have any room for loot.
Also tangled with Iketal the Brave and he was a real bastard to take care of (or so I thought I had taken care of him) - he then transformed into Biketal of Fire and I was down to 450 hps and had no healing + he summoned a bunch of Demons so I hit the destruct button. Does this mean he will appear in his orignal form again or do I only have to deal with him in his Demon persona - I hope it's the latter as I had to chase him all over the level once he got down to 1 star and every time I managed to catch up to him he was back up to 3 or 4 stars - Most annoying and definitely not an exercise I want to repeat (also very wasteful as It took my 1 *healing* and 1 *life* potion). If I had of kown he was going to do that I could've saved those resources for later and just destructed him for the moment.
Am I doing the wrong thing by hanging around on lvl 75? It just feels like my kit needs a bit of tweaking before I can comfortably go further (I may even be too deep as I'm destructing alot of things till I get the setup I want).
Any advice welcome.

Equipment wise, I would be on the lookout for Sacred Knights (replace Carlammas and your ring of chaos resistance with either extra attacks or decent damage/slaying ... on the proper finger of course!) and of course Crimson (replace other ring with speed). All of this should start showing up at your current depth if you are patient/lucky.
And wow ... 0 !Healing?? Where did they all go? ;-)
On 16.9.2005 01:28 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvll 43 - Angband 75
No Dump.
Chlvle 43 bought 2 new developments.
1. Blows increased from 7 to 8 - Hooray - Damage now 516 a round.
2. Found a Cloak of the Bat (-13,-9) +4 speed with Res:Dark..... Weighed up the pros and cons and decided I was tired of swapping in ring for re:Dark which then exposed either Nether or Chaos/Confusion and decided to wear it. Means my damage immediately went from 516 to 444.
It's a tradeoff but with careful planning it doesn't seem to be insurmountable on Angband 75. Still destructing a lot but on the most recent trip I managed to knock off Fiona, Corwin and Tiamat. Tiamat and Corwing were generated in a permawall checkerboard vault which was fantastic for me tactically. I don't think Tiamat would've been possible (no healing potions) otherwise and as it was she required me to back out one space, zap my rod of healing, and rejoin the fray.
Reaver - Double attack now gives me 16 blows of course and I only use it for special occassions. You'll probably disagree with me equipping the cloak of the Bat but I feel more comfortable not having to swap a ring in for the res:Dark hole.
You hit the nail on the head - the 4 items I'm on the lookout for -Jewel, Crimson, Sacred Knights and ROS +50 :-).
Where did all the healing go? LOL - They just burn a hole in my pocket.... "Hmm - instead of teleporting and resetting up the battle let's just quaff one of these *Healing* potions and keep whacking away" - I know I'm going to pay for this later but I just can't help it.

Time for an update.
Quite a few uniques knocked off. Had the fortune to find a large Checkerboard Vault on Angband 74 recently which contained (Jisisl, Fenris Wolf, Atlach-Nacha, Eric the Usurper, Pip the Braver and Habu). Since they were nicely compartmentalized all but Eric fell to Redwing's mighty fists. Not a great deal of useful loot but a couple of drops were implemented into my kit:
1. Necklace of the Dwarves (+3 Str and Con is a good improvement over Carlammas).
2. Randart Heavy Boots "Forwavivtue" - They have (+3,+5) and +3 to (str, Int, Dex & Con) as well as res:Blindnes, Nether, Nexus & Disenchantment). This means Shiva's boots go off. It also freed up a ring slot which means I can use item 3
3. Ring of Speed +8. Not Earth Shattering but still pretty good.
Item 1 was dropped by Jisisl, Item 2 by Pip the Braver and item 3 was dropped by a Chameleon of all things in the same vault.
I can't use a shield but the current eq now gives me 901 hps, no res holes, +17 base speed and 8 blows for 529 damage.
Other uniques that have bitten the dust include:
Raou the Conqueror, Yamata-No-Orochi, King in Yellow, Zhar the Twin Obcenity and Judge fire - None of them dropped anything of use.
Oh well - on with the show. Might attempt lvl 76 quest soon.

Briefly visited the Mines and R'yleh and decided both of them were not for me. Went back to Angband and dived down to 85-87 (Godzilla was lvl 76 Quest and he posed no real problems but Jeez the little bugger likes to breathe doesn't he?).
Been knocking off Uniques quite steadily. Two additions to the kit since last time - ROS updgraded to +9 and Levitation Stone of LaPuta replaces Elendil as it's +2 speed.
Toughest fight I've had so far was with Lungorthin as he summoned the Witch King of Angmar as well as some other nasty stuff. Manage to clean up with my standard tactic of using "passwall" and digging out a little safe hidey hole to retreat to when rest is required - of course if there's lots of burrowing critters that I can't take care of first then I destruct and start again.
Just killed Cantoras (2nd time around was easier once I put on Amulet of Anti-Teleportation so he couldn't drag me out of my snug cubbyhole and summon like crazy and he dropped Crimson.... Unfortunately I can't work it into me gear without leaving a res hole (sound) which is currently covered by my shooter so it stays at home for the moment.
Will continue on Angband 85-87 for the moment as I'm not ready for lvl 88 quest I think.
On another note I'm down to 3 wanted uniques :
Bolg
Alberich
The Tarrasque
Hopefully I'll get them soon.
On 19.9.2005 07:38 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Chlvl 47 - lvl 88 quest done + Reaver and Fenghuang defeated in the Arena....
This dump is taken with his kit for the Arena - low speed and no stealth due to Collar + Narya combination but it does the job when required. Was lucky decided to stick with Corwins Gauntlets as opposed to the Gauntlets of slaying as they make a difference of about 70hps and I had 59 to spare against the Fenghuang - LOL - talk about cutting it close.
Got bored fo milking levels 85-87 so took on lvl 88 quest previously hoping that it would not be Unicorn or destroyer and I got Cerberus - woohoo. Took him down pretty easisly.
Just prior to doing Reaver and Fenghuang in teh Arena I took down Gothmog on level 94 and he dropped "Narya" - this is why I deciced to take go further in Arena. Will wait and think about GWOP when chllv 50 - don't know if I can take it in the open without a whole bunch of luck.
Staff of Magi (from Fenghuan) should come in handy.
No 4th spellbook still - sigh.
Will dive down to lvl's 96-97 and camp out down there for a long while till I get it.
Yeeha
On 19.9.2005 22:02 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Good work against the Fenghuang. That's a rough customer in the arena. Gothmog is probably my favorite unique to kill. He's tough, but not outrageously so for his level, and dumps a TON of great stuff when you kill him.
Ha! Cerberus. I mean, if you just looked at his stats, he's a reasonably tough customer, but compared with the Unicorn he's a day at the beach.
On 20.9.2005 02:11 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: Elliot - more like "A day at the beach in the nude with half a dozen beautiful women and a couple of martinis....."
I haven't bumped in to the Unicorn in Heng yet but I've heard enough about it
I just bumped in to the Destroyer on level 98 and had to destruct him a couple of times as I'm starting to stockpile Healing at home (it's the only way I seem to be able to do it - If I don't have them on me I can't use em).
It may be foolish but I want to kill every unique so I realize I won't be setting any records for a quick finish (Haven't won Heng yet so I just want to get the result on the board and I want every single Unique to die).

Got impatient. After killing my first GWOP in Hengband on Angband 95 conventionally (Double Attack / Double Attack / Double Attack etc.... Staff of Magi / Double Attack / Double Attack / Double Attack etc I decided I would try and get past the GWOP in the Arena.....
I thought about it and at first I was going to try and do it with my fist but then thought better of it (I had to Qaff 2 x Healing Potions against GWOP and that's not an option in the Arena. I went with plan B which was to equip a poison needle and boost my to-hit with the Collar. I stupidly didn't have any handbooks of Pupil as I had destroyed them to be able to carry loot so I couldn't cast heroism. I also probably should've worn Faramir for the further +12 to hit but in the end -9 to hit was enough - Blow no 8 was a fatal one and the Wyrm expired when Redwing was down to 256 hps.
Should I try the Babble - I'm assuming I'll need reflection for it and alot of luck - I"m not expecting to win but what the hell....
ps ( the GWOP on Angband 95 dropped the Palantir)...
On 21.9.2005 14:34 ralonso@au1.ibm.com wrote: chlvl 48 - Babble murdered me but I got the Destroyer...
Arena battle against Babble was very shortlived......
Bumped in to the Destroyer and managed to stand toe to toe with it and kill it. Bit stupid not to have reflection and as a result it cost me my stockpile of 2 *Healing* and 2 *life* as well as both charges from Rods of Healing but hey I'm in no hurry and all uniques must die....
If it wasn't for the Staff of the Magi allowing me to renew my mana and thus continue Double Attacking Destroyer I probably wouldn't have been able to take him down. Shib-Niggurath and Atlas and Yig have also recently bitten the dust. Man oh man there are alot of Uniques (I looked them up - 261 - I think I've still got a way's to go before mopping them up but I'm determined that they all must go).

More uniques killed (Loki, Utgarde, Soggoth the Unclean source???, Eihort etc). I've swapped in Palantir for Boromir and put hammerhand on instead of Thranduil. This gives me some more hps (@30) and I'm finding the Activation from the Palantir really handy for tracking down uniques.
I still have not freed up my primary ring slot (still required for Chaos ring) - I do carry Narya in my inventory and swap it in on occasions for the boost to combat but I still get a bit nervous about it.
o
Decided to have a crack at Crypt quest (never seen it before) and had to abort as I went the hard way (ie through the first Druj room) before I noticed the door that could've circumvented that torturous path. I know you only need to kill the Archliches and then recall out and I figured there must be a way to get to them but I just didn't see the stupid side door so I bit the bullet and bulldozed through the first room (used up 2 charges from Rods of Healing + a couple of potions of *healing* sigh + all 5 charges from Staff of Mana Burst) - End result 2 of the 4 Druj's in the first room dead and a room full of summoned Undead. Decided to abort and just took the stairs up - I know I could've cleared this quest by avoiding the Druj's alltogether and I now know how. Only dissapointing thing now is that I have a failed quest (because of my stupidity).
Recalled to Angband after resting/restocking etc and ended up on lvl 99 because I had to use my escape method when staffs of Destruction got drained in my previous visit in encounter with greater undead so I read scroll of teleport level only to land in another unfavourable setup so read another one. I recalled out but obviously this was my new depth for my next recall.
No problem I thought, I'll just find the stairs up on the next 2 levels and get back @96-97 and continue on my merry unique slaying way until I'm ready for Oberon. As it turned out I saw Oberon close by and he was in a good spot (small enclosed area with lots of stone around him - Only had 2 healing and both of my rods of Healing + but I figured I would try it and see what happened.
What happened is that I've used one potion of healing and both activations from the Rods but Oberon only has 2 stars and I've got @800phs and am fully buffed. However the big wimp has started teleporting me away (3 times) and teleported himself away the last time (tried to follow but failed). Ended up landing next to Banor=Rupert and Dwar both of whom died quickly. I don't have any activations on my Staff of the Magi left but I'm pretty sure I can take him if I can get 2 or maybe 3 rounds tops on him.
Haven't faced Oberon before (I've never played Zangband and this is the furthest I've come in Hengband) - Craft Monks seem pretty powerful... :-) Hopefully when I do catch up to Oberon and kill him he'll drop something useful.
On another note can someone tell me if it's usual for the Destroyer not to drop anything? Majorly peeved about that considering the effort required to kill the big bastard.

str - 18/110

Dex - 18/110
Con - 18/100

Just knocking off Uniques whilst avoiding the Unicorn for the moment.
I've had a couple of goes at Shuma Gorath but had to abort due to unfavourable circumstances.
Mephistoles, Demogorgon, Gorlim, Azriel, Pazazu, Charcaroth and several others that I can't remembers. According to my remaining Uniques list there are 42 left. This is not 100% accurate though because there are some I have not seen yet in Hengband (this is my first lvl 50 character in Heng after 6 months of playing).
Just building up supplies of relevant potions/mushrooms etc at home while I knock off every unique I see (bar the Unicorn for the moment). When they're all done the rest of the Dungeon Guardians will be next and then the Serpend will be last (hopefully).
From what I've read the Unicorn will be appreciatively harder than the Serpent (particularly because my armor will sustain my stats against the Serpend but not against the Unicorn's melee time attack).
Looking forward to the battles ahead.
Reaver - With regard to the Great book of Amber - It's a fantastic read. I've finished the first 2 books within the compendium and I'm enjoying it immensely. I highly recommend it.

Shuma Gorath is dead finally. I've tangled with it 4 times previously and got close (could've done it earlier if I was prepared to burn potions but I'm not at the moment). Had to leave it's drops as had to destruct the nasties which had built up the last round before the killing strike. At least he won't annoy me later.
Also collected the Tarrasques corpse and handed it in which now means I just require Alberich and I'll get my scroll of Artifact Creation. Can't wait...
*** Rubs Hands Gleefully ***
Azriel is also toast and he thoughtfully provided a nice randart short bow with + Str as well as covering various resists (particulary sound as that is the res the old missile launcher was covering). This means my Str is now maxxed and my damage is now 916 per round.
All Uniques must die...

Nodens is dead - WOOHOO.
I'd heard alot about him and wasn't planning on fighting him because I'm still not carrying potions but as it turned out he fought like a "stunned mullett" and I only needed the 2 activations from my rods of healing. The Unicon was on the level as well but I'm not that stupid altthough I did cancel my recall when I noticed Gandalf in the next room so I could knock him off.

I don't automatically equip it as it drops my to hit as well as affecting my damage (-90pts - ie from 916 to 826).
Have tanged with both the Unicorn and the Serpent and although I took 2 stars off both of them I need to gathere more supplies.

He summoned a couple of times so I'm glad I had killed most of the Nasty Uniques but he did get Wyrms and Morgoth and Cyberdemons and Nazgul... Ended up teleporting away 4 or 5 times and only had 6 healing at the end. I quaffed the rest when I had a bit of a go at some of the other stuff on the level. Didn't feel like killing Morgie or cleaning up the few uniques left as I've played this character a long time.
One humorous note on 1.7.0 upgrade - I've been using Manabranding to great effect thoughout the game only to upgrade basically for the final battle only to find that Mana Branding now only works while wielding a weapon - lol.... Never mind - I got my breakthrought - I'm happy.
Shrooms of restoration came in handy as the Nazgul drained me.....
