It is a bit confusing, but it seems most people (myself included) love the new system. In-game, if it doesn't say "you can read this book" then you never will; it's not a matter of being too low level. If you look in class.txt you can find what books you can use and all the spells in them. I put into my Angband 4.2 public spreadsheet the names of all the books as well as how much armor you can carry before losing MP, plus other stuff, under the Classes tab. I don't have Ranger spells transcribed under the Spells tab, though.
Thanks - very helpful! I like a lot of what I'm finding with 4.2 but I'm just diving in.

Doombats currently don't destroy webs. Maybe needs a quick check through of all the fiery creatures?

This might be a really stupid question, but why is there an option to toggle description on/off when browsing a spell book? Couldn't the description just be always on?

This has occurred to me in the past too. There doesn't seem any reason not to show the description at all times, unless I'm missing something

The toggle I'd like to see is the ability to temporarily toggle-off ESP, so that I can easily see what treasure is underneath all those monsters in a vault.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

This would also make it easier to see if the monster is in line of sight, which isnt always obvious, at least not to me.

As long as the vault is sealed, you can safely simulate this by taking your esp-granting gear off for a turn.

...or vomiting your mushrooms of Second Sight for one turn?

Feature requesrt: get rid of level limit on branded weapons. I recently started a game in an older version that has no level limits on ego items, and found a lightning brand MoD. It's no good as an endgame weapon, but it still cuts a wide swath through everything except the bosses: 660 damage against almost everything. But in more recent versions, branded weapons top out before the MoD appears natively, so the combination is almost impossible. It'd also be a step towards solving the problem where deep GCVs only have endgame-quality ego items, which turns great items into the commonplace.

Because they were basically good Tolkienien characters - it would feel like fighting Beren or Gandalf. I originally removed Ossë for the same reason, but was persuaded that he was sufficiently ambiguous to go back.

Mandos (as a replacement for Azriel) remains my preferred one. Azriel was seriously scary.

White Wraiths seem to be very undervalued for XP. I detected one next to an Emperor Wight, which gives 4x the XP despite being very similar.
