A random thought about runes and curses:

Maybe there should be something like enchantment auras in addition to runes? Runes can't be removed from an object and auras can be removed. Curses (and to-hit and damage bonuses since they can be disenchanted) would become auras and "Remove Curse" would become "Remove Aura" or "Remove Enchantment" or something. ID could basically work the same as now, the character just identifies the auras by sensing them.

OK, new build up with PowerWyrm's fix to moaning, begging, etc and I believe a fix to the earthquake trap problem - happily making the trap, instead of the player, the epicentre of the quake both makes more sense and fixes the bug.

I was fighting Bert Tom and Bill; I think I was CL36 on DL57. I had protection from evil active. None of the three Trolls did any damage to me at all. As in 0 damage. I thought that was quite odd. They seemed to really be repelled by my protection from evil.

Protection from evil works on evil monsters whose native depth is less than your character level. Bert, Tom, and Bill are native to level 34 and you are CL36 so it is effective against them. Of course, if you are on DL57, the monsters native to that depth won't be affected by the prayer.

I think he's surprised about the lack of hits. They probably got one turn of combat each. So that's 16 blows, of which 8 would be repelled and 4 more might be expected to hit. It's not all that unlikely to get no hits at all in this situation--around 1% chance. That happens well over once per game. You just happened to notice this one.

Good to now about the prayer. Sorta dumb, though. Wouldn't the prayer be useful against enemies above your CL? I don't need help against monsters I can already kill easily....

I'm confused why my rAcid armor doesn't reduce the destruction to my stuff. I get hit with a bolt of acid and I lose 5 items. I've always had this idea if you don't have rAcid you'll lose 5 items, but if you have it you'll only lose 2. Then the Frost Giants wreck 3 or more potions since I don't have rCold. But I do have a ring of rCold/Heat that I swap with my ring of dexterity and it works! I don't lose potions when they attack me while I have the rCold ring on.

I think Angband would be a better game if the things that are supposed to help you ... actually helped you. I still don't understand how the risk of diving is better than taking things one level at a time. The game punishes you for trying to take on things that are challenging and rewards you for taking on easy challenges.

For example; summoners. I'm at a DL36 and I can handle the depth since I have _tele, but I have to be careful because I don't have any good gear yet, except Narthanc. Now to me what makes Angband fun is taking on challenges and then getting a reward for taking on those challenges.

I meet Ulfang the Black, and I start whacking away at him. I see that his is too strong, but if I phase door and use up all my arrows and breath attacks that I have, I can probably beat him. Well, then he summons some friends. Now that'd be fine, but the friends he summons are 5 DL deeper than him. And those those friends summon more friends that are also 5DL deeper than him. He is DL35, I'm on DL36 and I'm CL26. These kinds of experience tell @ "hey, don't take risks, go back to town or go up a level." Okay, how is that any fun? At least I wasn't stubborn this time and went _tele out of there and ?Recalled before dying. I didn't waste too many consumables.

I know I can just stair scum, but I never do this; I don't even do it a little bit. It kinda takes away the fun.

That all said: obviously Angband is doing a lot of things right otherwise I wouldn't be spending so much time playing it. :P

I tried posting chardump but it says character with that email and name with higher experience already on ladder.

I'm doing 105-145 damage with a DEX2 ring. I have quaffed 2 !brawn which -1DEX. I have 120 acid ball breath with basic dragon acid armor. I have a short bow +0,+4 with +3 and +4 arrows.

                STR:18/85
                DEX:18 (while wearing DEX2 ring)
                CON:15 (325 HP)

Priest or Paladin? If you're a priest, you pretty much have to rely on Orb and archery til you get your melee up.

First, make a new thread --this is really not bug report stuff. Second, make a character dump so we can actually see what you're talking about. Third, if you are still using a *Thanc at dl 36 of course you will have a hard time. Even Westernesse is better.

                        /sigh

                        You hear a whooshing roar.
                        You are hit by cold!
                        You die.

What, did entire atmosphere atop of Mount Everest get shot out of the belly of a dragon? DL39, danger feeling 4. Oh, right, didn't have rCold. Fantastic.

Well, I did. But I prefer to wear a ring of See Invisible than rHeat rCold. Because, surprisingly, fighting invisible things isn't that fun!

                          Latest commit on master (9fd29a2):

                          - "greater balrog" (everywhere I look, the word Balrog is always capitalized)
                          - the "name" and "plural" fields were modified, but not "friends"

I have no problem with the Gervais tileset when using the Windows client. There's no tile for siren traps though.
