      There are two bugs here:
      - unidentified torch shouldn't tell about radius because it could be a torch of brightness (radius 2)
      - the LIGHT modifier is treated differently in the description and the info panel: worn item shows the <+1>, but description only shows radius for fully IDed item; clearly this should be unified (show + and radius if modifier is known)

Surrender to Morgoth and accept his dominion over all?

Aren't all ego light-sources auto-ID'd anyway? As I recall they're already identified when you see them lying on the floor, so showing the correct radius automatically shouldn't be a problem. So presumably the underlying issue is that although (non-artefact) light sources are always automatically fully identified, they're not being properly registered as such until you wield them.

"Surrender" is good wording, I think. Maybe something like: "Surrender to Morgoth and quit the game? (All your progress will be lost!) [y/n]" That fits within 80 characters. Or even just "Give up and quit the game?"

Agreed. What I'm thinking for post 4.0 is actually have an exit from town which means "give up" - this both avoids the suicide thing, and gives a plausible explanation for where the shopkeepers get their new stock from.

What, take the next available bus to Nowhere Town and hope Morgoth doesn't find you?

Shouldn't torches (and lanterns, and especially Phials etc.) light up the area around them while lying on the ground?
I know they are nominally 'off' but still. I believe:

                      Nethack already has this.

(Actually, I just think it make the dungeon more...interesting. You could drop them on the ground for strategic effect.)

                        That's a very good idea!

I'm definitely not poo-pooing the idea, but I'd still want "Q" to be available .

(FWIW, "Surrender" or "Give up" are pretty good substitutes for at a rather unfortunate message. I'll throw in "Abandon the quest" as another suggestion.)

Yeah - I'm a "Keep going no matter what" type myself, but I'd have thought the sort of situations where people are most likely to want to abandon a game are where they're stuck in the depths of the dungeon, horribly stat-drained or nexus-swapped with all their spellbooks burned and no way of getting back to town.

Same here(*) (unless shamelessly start-scumming!), but it'd be a drag to have to get back to town to be "allowed" to give up. I'm not sure I want to admit this, but I have even starved to death in the wilderness (ToME 2.x) just because I'd forgotten all about buying food and I was hauling a 16.000lbs corpse back to town for possession purposes (-700ish speed). Only to realize too late that I'd have to ditch the corpse. It was definitely a learning experience about picking up corpses of dragons. (On the plus side, I've since been able to safely bring Ancalagon the Black's body back to town... and to possess it safely! So there's that.)

EDIT: (*) Actually, slight, lie. If I get badly Nexus-swapped at the start I will suicide a character almost immediately.

If only so that forced-descent no-recall characters can still quit.

"Surrender" seems like the best verb to use here, IMO.
