The build was based on the idea that Death spells should be able to kill all the normal monsters, while the Life ones will take care of the Undead, so this was going to be the ultimate blaster mage. It didn't quite work out as planned... the Mage has more average damage than both my other characters (Tourist and Mindcrafter, but still).
Oh, in case it doesn't show up correctly, SingedDream is actually a Shadow Fairy, under the Polymorph Vampire spell. I tend to always get the dump at the fully buffed state.
The first part of the game was rather un-remarkable, except that I found Black Channels really early on.
The major effect of this, is that I got my +10 temp speed from Battle Frenzy before I actually picked up my first speed artifact (the randart Leather Scale Mail of Knowledge, which was quite useful for a really long time). And then I'd quaff a !oCW to cure the Berserk to blast with spells.
Even with Death though, spells stopped being all that useful as a direct damage attack against most monsters. Death Ray is a joke considering how late you pick up Necrocomicon, and how many monsters resist the stupid spell. Vampirism True is really good when it actually works (i.e. not reflected or resisted), doing 300 and healing 300 for the mere price of 30 SP, but late-game it's not reliable. Nether Wave has been ok for killing mobs of puny monsters in Arena-type levels, and was actually really useful in Spawning Pits quest, because it would damage the Q's, and it has higher range than all the other spells.
Genocide and Mass Genocide were also a bit of a let-down, since it seems a lot of monsters actually resist it. And I'm not even talking tough Uniques, I'm talking like Lvl 30 Dreads found at dlvl 90. That's just not cool.
Hellfire has a 25% chance of failure even with Great Champion of Unlife, clvl 50, INT 18/220, which strikes it from being a staple spell (due to Necromicon failure penalties).
Darkness Storm is possibly the only decent direct damage spell, but the damage/SP ratio's low since it's area effect. There really just isn't any good magic against single opponents.
Ooh, no one told me that Mages in Heng only get 3 max blows, so I spent a really long time early trying to boost my STR and DEX, wondering when I finally pick up blow #4. Finally, I gave in, looked at the spoilers, and slapped myself upside the forehead.
So, I have all resistances covered except for Poison, but that's fine because I have both RPoison spell, and innate resist Poison from Vampire form, so that's still double-resist I think.
Closest/Hardest battle just now (right before the post) is against the Destroyer, in which I used like 5 !o*Healing* and 10 !oRestore Mana... I hunted him down, hoping to get one of the Lazy Artifacts... and he didn't put out >_< Dammit, could someone tell me who (other than the Unicorn) has the other two? Gr... that wasn't really worth it. He doesn't resist teleport, so I could have just avoided it.
On 19.3.2005 13:46 Antiguard wrote: Well you do realize lazy gives +10 to spell fail rate... brave choice :)
Are the artifacts worth it ?
On 19.3.2005 14:54 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Well, the major good Lazy artifact for a Mage is the Yumi of Irresponsiblility, which besides giving +7 Speed, INT, WIS, also gives the "Economize Mana" attribute, cutting all spell costs by 25%. The only other sources of Economize Mana are Wizardstaffs (which means no melee damage at all), and the Robe of Icanus (which I'm wearing now, but sucky for resists and AC, and generally not useful except for that ability).
On 19.3.2005 18:28 Antiguard wrote: Well for Life mage the AC and resistance issue is rather useless anyways. I'd say going lazy is a bad choice. If you insist on being a meleemage i'd still pick not having the +10 fail rate to -25 mana consumption. (like you arent doing just fine with the Robe though).
On 19.3.2005 19:11 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Well, again, the intent when creating this character was to have the ultimate blaster mage--it wasn't until later when I realized how much the Death Ray sucked that I switched over to melee. The primary school is Death--otherwise I would be playing a priest (which I am starting up, btw ^^ we'll see how that goes--did notice Life spells are much cheaper though, and max blows is 5 instead of 3).
In terms of the +10 fail rate though... right now, at 18/220 INT, the only spells with fail rates between 1 and 10 percent are Mass Genocide and Restore Life, both from Necrocomicon. And if the fail rate is higher than 10%, then not being lazy wouldn't have helped that much, because it's still not reliable. For example, True Healing is at 33% fail right now. Even if I didn't take Lazy, it'd still be 23%, which means no way I'd use it in a very close fight.
BTW, I do notice some Sorceror Winners on this ladder and also on the Heng main score server. I wonder what they use to do damage? Because obviously they can't melee, and like you pointed out, killing tough uniques with magic only is really hard, unless you're prepared to burn through a dozen !oRestoreMana for each.
On 19.3.2005 19:21 Antiguard wrote: Well there is staff of magi too and eat magic :). I think my mage carried around rods of * balls and ate them for SP.
On 20.3.2005 02:12 wrote: If you try to make "the ultimate blaster mage" you should've chosen Crusade as the 1st realm, I suppose. The 4th spellbook is absurdly powerful.
the other realm should be... Death, Chaos.. or maybe Daemon is probably an interesting choice, if you understand how to use effectively.
sorcerers... can use all the powerful summoning spells from the Trump realm, and they can cast "Passwall" "Ultimate Resistance" and then "Devine Intervention" "Manastorm" "Bloody Curse", and "eat magic" and "Recharging"...
On 20.3.2005 04:51 Atriel wrote: I think Crusade and Daemon may be a good combo.. because of explode pet right after Crusade casting. but not Crusade and Death.
I´ve had a hi-lvl paladin, and even thu the 4th spellbook is nice, there r no very good bosskiller spell of easy sustained casting even with a High Mage. Ok, *destruction* is nice, but Wrath of God (the spell) is imho a bit weak. With my paladin, i failed to kill a troll once because all the meteors missed him.
Divine Intervention is cool but costly and not good boss killer too...
After seeing Wrath of God, i think the Crusade mage have to resort to Holy Word w/ occasional Divine Intervention, Starburst and Judgement Thunder, late in the game.
Stardust is mildly powerful even late game against a single close oponent thu....
On 20.3.2005 10:39 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Hi guys, and thanks for the comments!
Ok, so I did totally forget about Eat Magic.. Lol, I guess I could have saved myself a lot of !oRestoreMana that way. Well, better late than never. I think I'll go spend my 4 million gold on buying out the Black Markets multiple times for those now. Just to think that I've probably destroyed a good few hundred of those in Angband... >_<
Yeah, so I did remember the Staff of the Magi.. but a lot a lot of monsters drain charges, so I didn't think bringing that along would be good. I suppose if I was doing Darkness Storm and Phase Dooring, then it's not a problem, but neither Death nor Life have Phase Door or Teleport, so I have to rely completely on scrolls.
Re: sorcerors, just looked briefly at the spells mentioned. Manastorm does look pretty good in terms of damage/SP ratio, but Bloody Curse looks a bit lacking, considering its level and SP cost. Divine Intervention and Holy Word both seem more like crowd control spells (i.e. same type as Nether Wave) than a boss-fight technique.
Starburst is just the reverse of Darkness Storm (pretty much same stats, except different element). Judgement Thunder could be good though.. not sure how many monsters late game resist lightning.
Anyway, back to Black Market buy-scumming. Thanks again!
On 21.3.2005 12:00 Antiguard wrote: Does someone know how explode pets damage works? Is it related to monster level or something. I just cant see how Crusade/daemon mage could be so effective combo. Protection side is bad and the damage output isnt that great unless the exploding thing does obscene damage (and doesnt hurt yourself). Never really played a daemon caster though. Not available to too many classes.
On 27.3.2005 22:15 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Killed Oberon. Frankly, he was quite a bit easier than I expected.. definitely much easier a kill than the Destroyer. He doesn't hit nearlly as often or hard, and often wastes turns trying to Curse me or invoke Hand of Doom (none of which worked, as far as I could tell).
The only vaguely annoying part was the Dispel Magics and the constant Mana drain, but even that wasn't too much of an issue.
The Unicorn hasn't appeared before me at all, surprisingly. I guess it's stock to go stock up on potions and then scum 99 for it.
On 3.5.2005 21:37 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Ok, I completely take back everything I said about Hellfire sucking. Against good monsters such as Angels and the Unicorn, it totally rocks.
The fight with the Unicorn was amazingly easy. He showed up next to me, so I whacked him once, and then the blinked. Since I didn't have any other ranged attacks, I decided I'd give Hellfire a shot, and it took him down a full star!
Hm... standard damage is 666, Unicorn has 20k HP... so it does 3X damage against good. So, I kept blasting him with Hellfire, and a mere !oRestoreMana later, he's dead, and I pick up my first lazy artifact, the Yumi!
In that same level, I also picked up Narya, as well as a slightly better RoSpeed, so I'm up to 3 out of 4 immunities now ^^. Though it's upsetting that I still haven't found a Ring of Extra Attacks with pval greater than 1.
On 4.5.2005 05:38 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Beat the Serpent. Quite tough, especially since I didn't clear the other guardians. Morgoth and Sauron were a bit easier, but also not nearly as easy as the Unicorn.
Hm... ok, so Morgoth dropped the Clothes, the Unicorn dropped the Yumi. Where's the last artifact? Browsing the monster spoilers showed only "Plain Gold Ring" as the unique 98+ that I haven't killed yet.
Help, please?
On 4.5.2005 05:41 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Oh, and I totally lucked out, because Morgoth was trapped in a vault as I fought the Serpent. Otherwise, it could have gotten quite nasty.
On 4.5.2005 23:15 elrosk@gmail.com wrote: *Spoiler*
Yup, you answered your own question... you want to look out for the Plain Gold Ring for the last lazy artifact.
I've been interested in seeing how well exploding pets worked, but never actually got around to trying it out... has anyone reading this used the spell?
On 5.5.2005 14:41 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Well, generally before I start serious playing a race/class combo, I open up a Test character in debug mode and boost myself to max, just to see how everything works. I don't really consider that cheating, since it's a "learning" experience, and I always start a new character whenever I'm ready to tackle the challenge normally.
Anyway, you could consider doing that on things you're curious about.
On 8.5.2005 20:36 Atriel wrote: My experience from Explode Pets come from playing Chaos Warrior w/ daemon.
My experience from crusade come from playing Paladin.
Explode Pet is a nice first strike and "condition" spell, coupled with summon hi daemon before, shutting down pet summon and activating again only a bit before the fight. Dunno about how it works with Crusade, but if the explosion damage is based on monster HP, then definitely it wouldnt be as good cuz demons have lots of HP.
Example of summon / EP fights.
Paladin character against Tiamat was a real long fight. Took hours.
I had only +16 perm speed, and cast lots of crusade.
Chaos warrior character in the fight with Tiamat: I had 3 big U´s before fight, and full mana. I use _haste monster out of Tiamat sight. In sight, activate pet summon. chain summoning. Pets surround me and Tiamat, i fight Tiamat while Pets hold his summons, heavily outsummoning her. 2 stars go away. mana start going down fast and things start getting messy. I ?teleport and then explode pet. Re-summon demons in AS corridor.
When i met she again, 4 stars have gone away and her summons weakened, and i with 3 new U´s to repeat.
