My first post to the ladder, after 'Banding for 15 years! People've been complaining that the community is too small, so I'll quit lurking now and join the fun.

Never thought I'd like anything with no stores and no up-stairs. I love this variant so far. Was beginning to get discouraged about my inability to find lightsources until I hit DL5 and finally, with a ?of Obj. Detection, found a lantern!! Finding that gave me new hope, like finally finding the Phial in any other variant.

I've been playing basically as a shooter/ranger, just got the book, 'Defensive Magical Theory' after slaying Bullroarer, and I'm tickled. Food Creation is a good thing. Can't wait to find the book with Remove Curse; I've never donned so many un-IDed items before. (Come to think of it, I think that ID is in the same book.)

This is the first char I've played where I have not been either killed (Grip, white worm mass) or had to Suicide due to lack of light sources or food. (my 4th char so far)

Cool things: the NPP tiles, I love 'em, I hope more variants will adopt either these or Sang's tiles....the trap which fires arrows at me, that was a neat surprise, reminded me of Steam's dreaded German Sniper (that b**tard!!)

I don't expect to make it much further. I've adpoted a technique that I've never had to use before, mapped the "[" key to remove my lightsource whenever entering an area I've already mapped, or when digging/removing trees/resting-to-heal, in order to save fuel...this helps immeasurably in the early game, I've found.

Actually, remove curse and identify are in different books, I think. But they both showed up reasonably early for me, though I think the book with ID might have showed up OOD for me. One trick you might already be using is to save up a bunch of stuff to try on, and try it all on at once, to save on remove curse scrolls.

Once you have SD there is more than enough food lying around. The trick to not running out of light is to not rest much (the fixed spell points help here). This means strategic use of ranged combat to avoid being damaged so much you have to rest. There seem to be a lot of sling ammo clumps, but be careful about getting your quiver cursed.

Update: dead at Wormtongue's hand.

Killed on DL7. He was also on DL6, I went down just to escape him, since I was out of MP and he had stolen *both* my spellbooks anyway. I had just discovered that I was native to forest, so spent a while pegging him with my wand of magic missile, confusing him with ?of Monster Confusion.

My next character died of light-source-lessness, as usual. Regarding lightsources being plentiful in the early game: I do not think that word means what you think it means. :) It is a pain removing my torch each time I get to an explored area, each time I dig, search, chop a tree, rest to heal, or attempt to pick a lock. And even then I run out of fuel anyway.

I repeat: fuel torch/lamp should be a spell in the first book, or more monsters should drop torches, or more should be generated on the levels, IMHO.

Yes, I've just started using this trick, too.

Still wishing for the extinguishable torch option.

Yes, I guess that if you always extinguish your torch you could rest more, since you wouldn't be burning light while resting. I still think that resting too much (or digging) may make it more likely that you run out of fuel, because new monsters will be generated on the level and you will have to spend turns killing them. This increases the likelihood that you will get light in a drop, but it lowers the amount you will get from the ground in a given number of turns (and if you are spending those turns before lanterns come into depth you are putting off finding a lantern, though I haven't checked to see what depth lanterns are native to).

One other thing that might help is paying attention to how efficiently you cover each level- it's hard to be sure what the best route is before you have magic mapping, but a good rule of thumb is that it's likely to be more efficient to go up and down rather than side to side. Sometimes you want to avoid running down a horizontal corridor if you don't know how far it will take you and you have another close choice that might not take you as far. Zipping halfway across the map and then having to come back to fill in areas costs a lot of turns.
