Haha, playing fast and loose with my main weapon after already using my initial ?Curse.

Nice game. Magic system is interesting so far.

Cosmetic bugs in character report file: (1) peek into object creation is in wrong section and (2) two unnecessary options listed, generate dungeons with connected stairs and restrict the use of stores/home.

Thanks for mentioning the options. Will fix.

All kudos for playing a Half Troll! I get sick of all these cheesy High Elves...

Well, that was an ill-advised ?PD. It seems I should have ?teleport, or !IDedCSW first.

The magic system continues to play well. The lack of regeneration makes one choose spells carefully, not just use some cheap spell like PD constantly knowing that mana will regenerate quickly. The only thing I wonder about is whether the various scroll fail rates are a nice quirk or an annoying quirk. It surprises me that it takes a while for ?Light to become reliable. Wands seem interesting. I think I'll run a high elf next to play a more magic-oriented character (and easier race, and play more carefully, so I can see what the magic stones are like).

The food/light system is good. The shortage of food gives it that old rogue feel where food can easily force diving. Create food spell is so expensive! Interesting - wonder if this makes food constraining for a long period in the game. Food is more constrained than light. I'm not sure whether that is good. I wouldn't take off a torch to cross a room in the very early game. Maybe I kinda like not being bothered. Running out of light is no big deal anyway, especially for races with infravision.

I like more of a umoria flavor for terrain and traps. Very plain terrain, and just plain arrows for shooting traps IIRC. I didn't like what was incorporated into NPP for that stuff. Oh well. NPP still has great interface and I like not having multiple towns and wilderness. But now that I'm thinking about traps, since you want less luck and this is ironman, maybe you should eliminate trap doors in the first few levels. Trap doors suck orc balls!

The very early game seems much easier than the early game. That might be due to my selection of race though. The half-troll needs to get a good weapon (mostly) in the first 2 levels, otherwise it can't even handle a hill orc on DL3 with its poor magic and perception. Maybe slightly different starting kits for each race would be in order - that would help to differentiate the races a tiny bit more too.

Stat points system looks good. I understand there are stat conversion potions, so I'd like to see more chaos in the stat points. Maybe every 5th level from the 10th through the 45th have +3,+2,-2,-3 to some random stats. I certainly enjoyed the DL2/4/6 stuff. The potential to have a stat drop could make people think twice about leaving a stat just barely sufficient to accomplish some objective (like num_blows).

Fun game. Definitely plays out like I feel a *band should. A QuickBand feel in some ways with interesting magic system, far less repetitive action, no acting like a mule to make money just in case something ubercool shows up in town. Could easily become my favorite.

P.S. @Orfax: drop something better than a Dagger (1d4) (+1,+4). I'd rather pick something up off the floor. kthxbye

Ehr, the very early game seems much *harder* than the early game.

On 15.1.2008 20:54 Antoine wrote:
Glad you are enjoying it. :)

All scrolls have the same fail rate, which is 0 by the time you get to Int 13, I'm pretty sure. It was never intended that scrolls should remain unreliable into the late game, except for min/maxed Warriors.

I felt light was more constrained than food, but then I'm willing to take off my light when I'm returning through explored territory. ... Oh, but with a Half Troll you are more hungry, so yes, food would become critical.

It's good to have some trap doors because they disincentivise the tedium of using stashes. Also, it's an incentive to raise Perception (which is probably not the most useful of the stats).

Will add an option to get random stat changes later in the game, but probably make it off by default.

I did add different starting kits by race in the second Beta, which I recommend you upgrade to. HT starts with a 2d4 club (but less other stuff). That definitely helps the early killing power, though you do want a new weapon soon if you can get it.

For my next char, decided I wanted something with INT/WIS/LUC, but not the slow experience of the high elf. So running a gnome. Just killed my low-level gnome and got the new beta. The gnome starting kit looks cool!
