This looked like a good combo to try - and it sure was. The balrog part was able to hack & slash until the magic-eater absorbed some real useful stuff. No staff of speed yet though. Had some great luck early on with stuff dropped by non-uniques. The uniques i've killed have collectivly dropped nothing. I did a run to R'yleah with a ?Aquirement and had good results - got the armour of Rohirrim. The staff of teleportation and the wand of teleport away I consumed made that all possible. Once I got down there, I had jack of shadows chasing me for a bit. Had an earlier scare in a small vault at 1000' when the Leanorian Hydra decided to show up. I took a few swings before I realized what it was, and found myself at around 50 health. The teleport away helped me again there.
I'm still waiting for a real kickass weapon to show itself.

Actually, not to be a downer here, but Balrog is probably one of the worst combos you can do Magic-Eater with. Why?

1. Because even though the +INT is nice at the beginning, all a Magic-Eater needs is 18/200 INT in the end-game for 0% fail on everything. Additionally, Magic-Eaters don't have SP, so they don't even get the +10% SP bonus.

2. Magic-Eaters don't have a "Satisfy Hunger" spell, so basically all your trips are going to be restricted by hunger levels. And humanoids corpses don't drop as often as you'd think (and frequently get fried immediately in the dungeons). This makes tackling Huge vaults nearly impossible.

3. Balrogs have pretty stiff XP penalties, for one really awesome intrinsic ability--Double Resistance of Fire at clvl 45. For a magic-eater, however, you'll almost never be carrying Staves or Scrolls, because everything is internalized.

Well, this char is progressing nicely. Using the teleport & tele away I was able to rescue sting without any trouble. Several more uniques have gone down, no close calls. Still need rFear, rDisenchantment, and rPoison before I go anywhere. Found the cloak of Mook in a small vault - no ood monsters (luckily).
With regards to balrog being a bad choice - oops. It's suited me fine so far, and i've only come close to starvation once :)
maybe I'll polymorph into something else in a while to better use this class.

My goal is to live forever - so far, so good.

Eggnog is progressing along nicely, although money is a constant struggle - everything I sell is worth diddly 'cause he's freakishly ugly. Found a pretty beefy spear of slaying(5d10), so i'm weilding that for a while. Had to put on free action and fear resistance rings to make up for the loss of sting though. Nothing mind-blowing yet, unfortunatly.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for it, but I seem to have discovered a bug.
I haven't done a large amount of testing, nor looked at the code, but here is the bug : With my magic eater, I cast a rod of lightning balls ('z' under rods), I press 'n' to repeat the command - but i'm out of charges, so it asks me which power I want to use. I select cold balls ('1' under rods), and nothing happens. I check and the power is used - but with no effect. If I do the same actions without the 'n', it works fine. One last detail is that i am using the auto target, not a direction.

Thanks

If you can post on newsgroups, rec.games.rougelike.angband is a good place to post bugs. Also, emailing the maintainer is good. Here isn't bad, as obvoiously some devoted players read dumps here (not me).

You probably don't need fear resist very much (can teleport, tele away, or otherwise leave the area easily enough). Consider carrying !heroism if you can to get a boost to hit or negate fear.

As for equipment. I'd either swap in a ring of con for the ring of fear resist, or swap in a ring of damage for it and wield sting. Anywhich way, swap a ring of con or damage for it.

And I'd read a couple of scrolls of enchant weapon (damage) on the spear.

Later on, you can get a Staff of Holiness through the Arena, which will give Protection from Evil as well as Removing Fear.

Well, Eggnog has made some good progress. Still looking for a staff of healing though. Found another aquirement scroll (that makes three now), took it to R'yleah, and was rewarded handsomely with Werewindle. Was previously using Soulsword (found in a vault). Werewindle finally gave me some of the resists i needed to get rid of some rings and put in some speed rings. Went back to the dungeon at 2100 or so, and realized that I didn't have rPoison anymore. No ring to back me up either. I was lucky, and found a ring of rPoison about three steps away.
Found a vault full of uniques - judges death & mortis, Ulik, Quachil Uttaus, Chaugnar Faugn, Strygalldwir, Melekith, and Lord Borel. Only took a little time and teleporting (Ulik took a few !healing), but no problems. Rewards were modest : a randart armour (turbo), Calris. Celegorm (got it on an archangel outside the vault), arrow of the bard, and thakkletoth.
Nothing I can really use, unfortunatly.

Just waiting for some staves of healing to appear so I can try out the cloning pits & old castle.

You can get a Staff of Healing through Doom Quest 2 in Morivant (Castle). YOu need to do Doom Quest 1 in Angwil first though. The quest isn't very hard for a Magic-Eater, though you will need a good number of !oResistance (the Iron Liches breath fire strongly).

Dude, you have Diatribe! And the Glaive of Pain! Wield the Glaive! Combined with a hopefully high level of speed charges, you should be able to lay waste to the Cloning Pits. Your stealth is crummy, so be cautious, but 5 or 6 healing potions should be adequate.

On 18.1.2006 19:02 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Actually, I still think Doom Quest 2 should come first. There's a lot to be said about getting a good 10+ charges of 300HP healing, even if they are high fail initially. And the quest is also much easier (fewer random variables, like random monsters, and chain-summoning Gachapins).

Well, things have progressed rather nicely for ol' Eggnog here. I ran the cloning pits with no amount of trouble. Didn't need healing at all. The gachapins summoned only about 10 or so hydras between them - no problem there. Everything dropped quickly - unfortunatly, I didn't get an super great stuff from the drop - though belthronding comes in handy. I got much better stuff from Doom Quest 2 right before the pits - Sacred Knights and a speed ring. After the pits I ran the old castle - nothing of note found; no trouble either. He's got most of the resists covered nicely (no shards though - not looking forword to great crystal drakes), and he needs some more int, but he seems to be coming along quite nicely.

Shards is probably the single resist I have the most consistent trouble filling.

My big four hard resists are: Light, Sound, Shards, and Disenchant. Light is somewhat less important, but what are you guys usually doing for Sound and Disenchant? Thorin? Quickthorn? Not that many items seem to give them fixed..

Isn't Thorin rChaos?

rDisenchantment is hard, but its a must-have, so I usually build my kit around whatever I have that provides it. Light usually doesn't matter unless you're fighting Ethereal drakes, and Bards and Beastmen both get rSound intrinsically, so I haven't had to worry about it in a while. Why do Beastmen get rSound?

On 25.1.2006 02:52 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
In Heng and Entro, Thorin gives RSound and RChaos guaranteed, and 1 additional resist.

No idea why Beastmen get RSound.. but RSound is pretty important too, due to the side effect of destroying potions and stunning you.

I seem to wear the RDisenchantment ring until pretty embarrassingly late levels..

Well, went back to ol 'Eggnog again. Found the palintir, which allowed me to hunt out the rest of my wanted list - first time i've gotten all of them. I was aided nicely by a vault containing 3 of my top 5 on the list - all very OOD, but not so much that I couldn't handle em. Got fingolfin from a ?oAquirement. Just biding my time to build up some healing to take on the GWoP and the babble. I think its definatly doable for a magic eater - so much built up healing. I've found one of the best crowd control weapons is dispel evil - 10-20 shots with it is enough to take out even the toughest mob. Still missing rShards. Was going to switch to Thakkletoth for it, but then would lack rSound. Anabasis is great to find - but the Immunity to fire is wasted on this balgog, unfortunatly. Next post set for either death, or beating the babble

I wondered what happened to Eggnog. That's a lot of offense coming out of Werewindle. Ooooh, Anabasis AND Diatribe. Those are some nice artifacts.

Yeah, this char by far has had the best luck with aquirement scrolls. I've gotten about 6 or 7 so far this game (including the two from the arena), and got diatribe, anabasis, and most recently, fingolfin (that was in the dragons lair, too). Usually I end up with something like soft leather armour of resist cold. I'm hoping to ditch Werewindle soon - I teleport too many uniques away when they're almost dead, but I haven't found anything that will top out the damage like it does. I guess I'll have to sit and wait for Vorpal Blade or Songmaster.

You may notice the large amount of mutations - a nice chaos vortex provided them. They're also the second round - I had a bunch of great ones the first time, but picked up way too many bad ones. I was attracting demons, animals, and dragons. I went to cure them, and I ended up curing everything (Attract Demons was the last to go). I lost beserk, eat walls, speed, and a bunch of other great ones. So I did this one until I picked up vampirism, which really helps a balrog out.
Incedently, I think that magic eater is by far the most powerful class I've played so far. They have an unbelievable amount of resources to pull from towards the endgame.

You're starting to get to a depth where you probably should plug up RShards.

Swap Isildur for Arvedui, and Anabasis for Thorin.

Interesting! You found a randart Sexy Swimsuit on a non-female non-Sexy character. That's a bit sad, but still, I haven't seen those before.

On 25.2.2006 03:20 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Yeah. Sadly, Shards really is one of the resists that you just can't live without at this depth. Blindness? Easily. Light? Sure, just don't go after Bahamut, Ethereal dragons, or the Unicorn. Even Nexus is doable (though risky), as long as your stats are all nearly maxed. But Shards? Nope.
