The first time you eat a Mushroom of Metamophasis, you can suffer a vareity of effects, but every time after, you switch races each time. Don't eat them, and you won't switch race (due to mushrooms).

I then ate another one which did increase my intelligence, but turned me into a hobbit and decreased my strength from 18/50 to 11. I was then so preoccupied with finding potions of strength that I completely overlooked the loss of free action.
