Yet another well-started unbeliever. I found a very nice short sword in Mirkwood. I've been using it instead of my trusty dark sword, and I'm thinking if it is a wise decision? So far I've been doing well with Sting, but how much does it actually hurt if I don't use dark sword?

If only I could find a sentient dark sword... :)

At this stage in the game a darksword is not much help. Definitely stay with Sting until you start fighting monsters that have really dangerous spells (Greater Undead, especially). Even then, if you need to you can use a darksword as a swap. Sting is a great weapon and will take you very far.

I found the Phial of Galadriel, and when I wore it the game told me something about a set being complete. Obviously, Sting and PoG form this set of elven gifts, but does having a complete set of items have some sort of effect?

Indeed. You should go to ToME.net for all your spoily needs--it's the most extensive site specific to a variant. The Sting set (which you have now completed) gives wisdom, charisma, stealth, regen, and resDark. Sadly (IMO) the sets in ToME are not terribly useful...unless you play as a Demonologist. The Gothmog set is quite nice.

I came across Durin's Bane, and it almost killed me. I guess I need better equipment, even though I haven't had any trouble for a long time until DB.

Interestingly I still haven't found any usable cloaks.

Well, well, well. A Princess rewarded me with a Mormegil. The question now is, should I wield it? I can deal with stat loss and aggravation, but I am not happy about possible summonings of powerful hostiles, and paralyzation.

And I'm also not very keen on carrying Mormegil and *RC*-scrolls around, so that I can use Mormegil only in tight spots.

As someone who considers himself an expert on Unbelievers and Mormegil, I highly recommend you just use the sword. I'd go so far as to tell you to use Gorlim with it. The only real determiner IMO is the hp drain. Have free action so that the statue curse doesn't last too long, and the rest is actually good--aggravate and summon monsters are just more sources of xp. I promise you, that sword will kill absolutely everything in the game. If you get a little lucky and get vampiric brand on it, you're invincible. Just don't hit any Nazgul with it...

Oh, and you should only need to uncurse it once. It doesn't auto re-curse just because it's got AFC.

I've started using Mormegil at level 27 before, and it worked out...better than fine. Lots better.

Yes, I believe you are right! HP drain is not an issue since I can always wield Sting (or anything that does not drain) until I'm healed.

Does hitting Nazgul with Mormegil shatter it? Or just disenchant, which should be a good thing, since dark swords work better with less enchantment bonuses?

I'd use Gorlim (since its curses no longer add worse effects), but my current helmet is my only source for resisting blindness, and full ESP would also be nice.

On 16.11.2005 17:13 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote:
I'm pretty sure you can shatter Mormegil on a Nazgul. I shoot the Ringwraiths to death usually, or pick up a random ego sword and use that. Anyway I'd wait to see what kind of powers Mormegil gets before choosing to disenchant it. If it gets a lot of offensive firepower, I'd let it go and swap in a +0+0 for those times you *have* to prevent spellcasting (rooms of drujs or Qs). If you do choose to disenchant it down, take it to 10/10. The -20 AC will balance out those bonuses and you'll have a 100% fail field. I prefer to disenchant on a disenchanter mold--just take off all your other gear and stand next to it for several turns.

Kicking ass. I regenerate fast enough so that Mormegil's HP drain really does not matter.

My playing style has declined; I have started just running and maiming monster, which I think is not wise. Carelessness will be the death of me one day, unless I have a little break and return with renewed enthusiasm.

Wow I just noticed your ribbed plate armor. That's the second nicest life armor I've ver seen--Hard to find them with hit/dam penalties so low. Congrats on your end-game armor.
