Time to start posting alot of character deaths ... I don't mind, though :-)

First stab at a MirrorMaster. I see a few posts on oook, but not many. Had trouble getting started at CL1 ... I mean, how do you kill anything with just a measly dagger and no offensive spells (Drip of Light comes at CL2). Then it dawned on me: Break Mirrors. Set 'em up, lead monsters on top, and then break 'em. Worked OK until CL2, when I could rely on Drip of Light.

Looks like this character class will require some thought and strategy ... Definitely not my forte!! But we'll see how it goes ...

(CL20: DL12) Finally have a bit more intelligence (CON is sadly lacking, though). On the stat raise front, its been all about STR, which has had 5 raises so far. Only 2 for INT (and they were both my choice :-), yet the two stats are almost equal, so it looks like one is below average while the other, above average. I probably should have picked CON last level but, hey, I have to be able to kill stuff!!

Delayed picking up the Warg quest reward as it *always* sucks ... but not this time! The Art is not great, but I'll take the +2 INT and CON any day ...

As expected, this character class does well in the Orc Camp. Perhaps I'll hang out in the Orc Caves for a bit. I did poke my head in the Anti-Melee cave. No way ... Ancient Dragons and Vampire Lords ... I don't think so! I'll be taking this character the standard route, which will involve hanging out patiently waiting for Stat potions and speed before being ready for the Cloning Pits. Might be a while ...

(CL 25: DL22) Things have picked up since my last post. Getting INT over 18/100 allowed me to finally do enough damage to kill things like Pseudo Dragons (not to mention Wyverns!) Still using Drip of Light quite a bit (in beam form, of course), mainly because of its low casting cost. Significant monsters generally get Mirror Clashing, which is currently a radius 2 13d8 shard ball. Seeker Ray is going to take some practice to use well. The failure rate is still a bit high, but I have tried it out a couple of times, and like what I see so far. Of course, I really want the Super Ray :-)

Finally, finally found a source of Free Action. I do still need resistance, so I am patiently biding my time at pre Gachapin quest depths. Or perhaps not so patiently, as I have the autoscummer turned on at the moment ...

Still no resistance. But Bronze Dragon scale mail is allowing me to play games with a *really* high AC for such a low level. Conquered the orc cave at +2 speed, simply letting Azog attempt to hit me while I casted shard ball after shard ball ... I think I was 153 AC at the time. 167 AC should be even better!

2 more levels until I get some serious offence ... I can't hardly wait :-)

(CL 27: DL24) Expecting Gachapin and I got Grendel ... again. He tried and tried to hit me, but missed about 85% of the time. But best of all, he dropped Werewindle!! Normally a very annoying weapon due to its Chaos Brand, but I don't plan to ever melee, so this suits me fine! I was just thinking of what weapons I would really want, and Werewindle came to mind just behind Grayswandir (which has +4 CON). All hail the mighty RNG :-) (Now I just need another +13 CON from my equipment and I'll be set ;-P

(CL 30: DL 40 Anti-Melee) OK, now the Anti-Melee cave looks doable. Just need to be careful. With the Super Ray, I do about 180 hp of damage, and I get about 9 of these. So Ancient Dragons are doable (but not AMHD). Levelled from 29 to 30 in about 10 minutes, so I might hang out here a bit!

It'll probably be about CL38 - 40 before I'm ready for the Cloning Pits, though :-(

(CL 35 : DL 47 Anti-Melee) Boy, rings of CON can quickly become addictive. I would go back to wearing both of my +5 CON rings if I didn't feel like I needed the +6 INT so much ... Were talking an extra 120 HP!

But in the meantime, I've been hanging out in the Anti-Melee caves. Not really relying on the Anti-Melee too much, however, as I generally sneak about and dispatch monsters one at a time. Itangast just paid a heavy price for sleeping too soundly, as I set up 7 mirrors behind him, and then moved to the other side for some Super Ray fun. Only needed 6 of the mirrors, and he dropped Faramir (More Stealth!!) as well as "Telepathy". I think I'll go for Mother Hydra and Father Dagon as well, but things will really start looking up next level when Mirror Tunnel becomes available.

Gosh, I have a wish list of desired items a mile long, including Crimson, Laputa, Jack of Shadows, Hammerhand (would asking for Amber be too much?), Cambeleg (or perhaps Corwin), Sacred Knights, etc. etc.

Some of these will be required before I am willing to attempt the Cloning Pits. I heard some place that Patience was a virtue ...

Well, I just found a couple of items from my list. Cambeleg came first, and I'm really only using it for +2 CON, so Corwin would be much better. And I just found Hammerhand as well. This means that my CON is amazingly 18/***, thanks to +17 from my equipment! Still, I cannot wear rings forever, but its nice to take a singly resisted Acid breath from a Great Bile Wyrm and just shrug :-)

Let's see, I think Crimson and Laputa are due up next ...

Boy, the Greater Hell Magic Mushroom Were-Quylthulg was sure in a good mood. It dropped a +5 Cloak of the Bat!! Now ordinarily, I would not use one of these, since I generally play melee type characters, and (-10, -13), for example, is just intolerable. However, my Mirror Master *loves* it, and +5 Speed/+5 Stealth is just awesome!! Crimson and Shiva's Avatar and hey, I might not need to wear a Ring of Speed after all ...

Wow! Buying a Ring of Speed in the Black Market really takes me back. There was a time when this was essential strategy, and a good portion of the game consisted of town scumming for one to show up. Thankfully, those days are long gone! Must be the first RoS I've bought in Hengband, but at +9, and for a mere 540,000gp, how could I resist?

I still want Crimson, though ...

CL43 is just around the corner, though ;-)

(CL 43 : Cloning Pits) Well, this was probably the latest I ever attempted the cloning pits, but I was tired of patiently awaiting required equipment in the Dragon's Lair, and figured between 3 'Its' and 3 Gachapins, I might get something nice.

Well, I got Eonwe from a Gachapin, and that is nice. +2 to all stats, Mass Genocide activation and cold immunity. But while I was mopping up, I put all the Fasolts in a Binding Field and killed them in 3 turns. One of them dropped Amber! And I thought my luck for the quest was over :-)

Still, I lack Sound and Shards resistance, but I will play without them for the time being.

I tried working R'lyeh for a bit, but without Shards resistance, Cyberdemons are just too scary. So its back to the Dragon's Lair, where I will try to work the bottom for some good drops.

I'm back to Eonwe as well, as the cover everything equipment kit left me encumbered and less intelligent than I would like. I seem to need to 0% failure rates on my spells!

In Angband, Ithaqua went down without too much of a fight, but the quest rewards have generally consisted of unwanted diggers, spell books, arrows and bolts.

I think I mentioned that I want Crimson?? And Laputa?? Surely I've played long enough to warrant both of these!

What can I say, but I need more stuff!! I guess that's always the case, though. I just killed Fiona (I'll risk an Amberite with my Magic Resistance) and got the Necklace of the Dwarves. OK, I'll give up the stealth of the Pitch Dark Night for that. Also shuffled in Gandalf's staff for Nether resistance, allowing me to wear the +9 ring of speed again. But now, my stealth is only Chaos Rank. Hmmm ... I think that Crimson would really help me out!! :-)

140 uniques remain. Deepest kill: Wahha-Man, who actually turned out to be quite the cry baby ;-)

Alternating between Angband, R'lyeh and the Dragon's Lair. Well, I found a nice vault in the lair with an unidentified ring in it. Too bad Santa Claus was right by, with spells at the ready. He would be an easy kill, except my first binding field broke one of the mirrors, and he summoned enough that I simply had to kill him with plain old Super Rays.

The ring was Tulkas :-)

Now, I just need to improve a couple more equipment slots. Perhaps if I could find Crimson ...

Dworkin failed to drop his artifact. And so did Brand. And the Yamata. And Fiona, and ... and ...

If I thought I could kill Echizen, I might go looking for him ;-)

However, I tried it once, and things went well. And since then, well the mutations have seemed to be largely good. I've never had my race swapped, or been turned into an Abomination, or anything else, but I really don't know if I've just been luck, or if that is even possible with the potion.

So use one at your own risk!! :-)

I got the Destroyer for my DL88 quest. At first I was nervous, but then I remembered how easy Wahha-Man was. Of course, the Destroyer also has some ranged attacks (Mana bolts, which I may largely ignore due to my innate reflection) and a Disintegration breath, which is bad for both me and mirror alike. I began by creating a large room in the NE corner of the level. I was out of range of the Destroyers detection, so I had plenty of time to prepare. Then I went out in search of the big g, *Destructing* everything else I saw (focus is key!). Finally found him, and then I retreated to my large room, were I preceded to kill him with a Binding Field. If mana got low, or a mirror broke, then the Destroyer was teleported away. His disintegration breath hurt a bit at first (3 breaths and I was in the 400's as far as hp goes). Used Amber once, saving my 4 charges for later. Turns out that was all I needed. (Ruffnor's mirror was not used ... still a bit too expensive, but Multi-Shadow was enjoyed!)

The drop was sub-par (Poison Needle???? Come On!). But Thalkettoth does allow me to finally cover all resistances ... at the cost of +9 speed. I'll run as is for the moment ...

Why did I want this??
[1] +4 speed. Yes!
[2] +4 stealth. Double Yes! I'm now Amber[15] stealth, which is nearly *god* like!
[3] Nether resistance. Oh Baby!
[4] Drumroll please .... And the random resistance is Shards!! Does it get any better??

So, the random resistance gets rerolled everytime you pick up a non-*identified* artifact? Interesting ... And I agree that Crimson *should* be a gimme. I always seem to run into it in the Dragon's Lair if I kill enough high level dragone. This character, however, killed hundreds of high level wyrms on DL72 of the Dragon's Lair, and never got Crimson, not too mention any light source other than Elendil (which is still all I've got) ... I guess the lesson is that you shouldn't count on any one particular item showing up ... You might be disappointed!

But back to the adventure, which is going nicely. Battles with the Mirror Master take a bit of setup, and its easy for things to get spoiled (like battling the wanted Cerberus only to have the "unwanted" Wong show up ... no matter, I alternated fighting one or the other til both were dead, teleporting Wong away whenever it was convenient). Also, frequent failures on Dimension Door have become increasingly annoying. Failed 3 in a row against Sauron ...

4 wanted uniques remain.
83 total uniques remain, and the highest kill so far is Sauron ... no ring (not that I would have dreamed of using it, mind you).

I'm almost ready to consider Cthulhu, even though he is the type of monster that poses a lot of trouble for a mirror master: nasty frequent summons, disintegration breath, an inexplicable love of cyberdemons, etc. We'll see ...

On 31.7.2005 00:23 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
OK, I just checked my kill count. Probably only killed about 50 or so choice dragons at DL72 of the Dragon's Lair (Great Storm/Ice/Bile/Hell/Venom Wyrms and Great Wyrms of Law/Chaos/Balance) ... It probably seems like more because the battles take longer to fight ... A berserker can mow down dragons with just a few keystrokes, while I need many many many more :-)

Raphael and a wanted Eric are also on this level. Unique monsters are starting to thin out a bit!

Oberon is down. The battle was fantastically easy, as I did not even use a single * of healing (potion, staff, activation). In fact, I'm not sure I took a single point of damage the entire battle ... seems odd. I'm holding the take, which includes some negligible artifacts, an underpowered ring of speed, and Nenya.

Now I'm sure the battle with the Serpent will be quite different, and quite difficult. I'd really like more *Healing* (I know where I can get 2 more :-) But without the Jewel, it has been hard for me to find potions. I'll wait a bit longer and kill some more uniques, as there a couple of bad ones left.

*WINNER*

To say that the final battle was epic would be an understatement! I really, really should have dispatched Null the Living Void, as it got summoned, drained all my charges (I was not about to let the Serpent touch me ;-), and I think it also turned me into a moron ... again. At least something turned me moronic during the battle. Might as well blame Null!

But in the end, I only used 2 potions of *Healing*. My staves of healing got drained early on, by Null. Also, I got a rude awakening that I needed to pick things up after 3 tangles with the J and it was unhurt entering the 4th. At that point, if I had a good binding field going, than I would use Restore Mana and *Healing* as necessary to keep things going a few extra rounds. I probably could have died a couple of times, but it became clear that I was going to need to take some risks if I was to win.

The battle took every last ounce of *Destruction*. I would have had plenty were it not for Null ... that bugger will die by the hand of my next character! ;-)

Oh, and I was very quick to retire this time ... One quick trip to Zul to repair my brain. 8 moronifications has got to be a new record!

Funny how those "to-do" lists pop up in your mind after a while. Now that I'm back in town, I'm looking forward to getting back to a mindcrafter I was just starting, and down the road I'd like to make some more progress with a Red Mage, a plain vanilla mage, and a magic eater. I'm sure additional interesting combos will pop-up as well.

That was pretty much why I stopped playing ToME and then Steamband. Both were fun, but I Just couldn't think of another interesting combination to play.
