Good Grife! Our current hero wasn't much loved in his formative years. His plan: defeat the big bad, make his fortune, then refuse to share a brass nickel with his folks, that'll show 'em!

The trident of westernesse is a nice find this early. Wormtongue, keep 'em coming.

Here is what happened in a nutshell: I got a superb feeling about the level, and after exploration, found that the only thing unusual about it was a vault. Woo hoo! One catch: there was a basilisk, mature green dragon (no PR), Azog, and one of the Umbarite uniques in the vault. At this point in my character's career, this array was a bit iffy.

On top of that, I hadn't been able to buy many arrows (started with only about 40), my melee damage was just not that good, and I had forgot to stock up on flasks of oil, leaving me with two. I had also been having trouble with hounds-- what else is new.

I proceeded to try to fully clear the level. It took a long time just to map the area around the vault, and cost me most of my arrows. Then, one of the dark elf druids in the vault summoned up a whole bunch of various annoying hounds ( I forgot which type), which caused me all sorts of problems.
Along the way, I found Thandruil outside of the vault. I should have just called it at that point.
I finally started attacking the vault, and slowly took out the dragon, Umbarite, and Azog. Azog in particular was tough, cost me the rest of my arrows, and last speed potion (only had three, lost one to breath attack, used one on the Umbarite). The my lantern ran out of light, but I continued since I had 6 rods of light and the area around the vault was well-lighted.

Finally, I attacked the basilisk, got it down to four stars. At this point, I cast phase door ( I forget why, I think it was because there were some other more minor creatures in the room, and I didn't want to get mobbed.). Instead of teleporting me close by, I end up in a branch of the dungeon quite far away, in the dark.

At this point, I was in a rush to get back to the basilisk before it recovered too many hp. I was also addled by fatigue. Since it was dark and I had telepathy, I started the bad habit of jamming the movement buttons. As I approached the vault again, the basilisk appears quite a bit further from the vault than expected (previous runs had kept the vault monsters in). Before I can blink (physically, not in-game), Grife was dead.

Argh. Another careless death. Would have been able to clear the superb vault too if it wasn't for that.
