Try dropping about 600-700 feet; you'll be below air hound depth there, and should be able to find better gear and some stat potions. Carry plenty of Cure Criticals for when you get blinded or confused, and buy potions of speed whenever you get the chance.

I've managed to drop some distance -- I play conservatively due to my nethack experience, probably. I do carry cure criticals -- just hadn't gotten enough last time. Thanks for reminding me to get potions of speed though -- I ran out of those a while back and there weren't any in the shops when I checked, and I guess I forgot.

Not only did he disenchant all my armor (except the resistance armor) down to about +5, he had me at 0 HP at one point. Phase Doored, Quaffed a potion of speed and some CCWs and just barely escaped. (Not sure about the sequence there.)
Have since noticed potions of speed occur at 50', so I've run through there a couple of times for those.

You should dispose of disenchanters with a ranged attack at least. Drink a potion of heroism or such and start shooting
