My first game of Angband in at least 5 years and everything is going pretty well so far. Power to the kobolds!

I've knocked off some uniques that I had to run from before (Adunaphel, some others) so I know I'm making progress! But I'd sure like to get resist confusion. No doubt there's a bunch of other stuff I don't even realize I desperately need...

I just Acquired the Trident of Ulmo from a scroll at 2150'! Things may have changed since my college Angband-ing experiences, but this at least used to be one of the 10 best weapons in the game. It certainly blows away any other piece of equipment I've found thus far. Hurray for Gvee!

I'm on dl47, and just liberated the Evenstar from Scatha the Worm. I found Caspanion just a little while back as well. Hopefully all my new goodies will be enough to keep me alive against The Balrog of Moria... The one Lesser Balrog I encountered awhile back was no picnic.

IMO, you need a Ring of Constitution +4 instead of that
Lightning Ring. Constitution of 200+ gives you maximum HPs,
which is *really* important.

Your advice about the Con ring sounded good. I haven't found any +4 rings of any stat but a stumbled across a +3 Con ring within minutes of reading your post. Why don't you suggest I find some more goodies...

I just cleaned out my house and spent a cool million on Boots of Speed +7. Here's hoping that dropping Res. Nexus doesn't get me killed somehow...

I would consider dumping one of the speed rings for the =oCon since you have the boots. That would still give you >+10 unhasted speed and max hp. Nice cloak. Now all you need to find is the crown of Gondor and you will be set.

Due to popular demand I've switched over to the +4 con ring that I found recently. I'm at dl56 and heading down until the fights get tough!

I just hit the jackpot! A checkerboard greater vault at dungeon level 60. It was full of super-powerful uniques, including Gothmog, the Witch-King, Pazuzu, Carcharoth, and Lungothrim, all of whom I teleported away. The equipment, on the other hand, I kept. Current dump shows Gvee just after WoRing to town. Highlights include Celeborn, RoS +8, Amulet of Trickery, Cambeleg, Anarion, Crisdurian, Luthien, Hammerhand. Much rearrangement of my equipment is about to begin. :)

On 29.2.2004 15:32 mccoyjf@hotmail.com wrote:
I haven't played much lately but when I have I've made good progress. Gvee is on dl72 about to return to town for an equipment rearrangement. Thorin was a great find, and Glaurung gave me level 50 and much good equipment. I'm approaching a ludicrous 40+ speed with all resistances but shards. I could probably be much deeper in the dungeon but I'm taking it fairly slow since I haven't seen most of these monsters before, plus there are a lot of uniques that have been avoiding me.

On 26.3.2004 05:41 mccoyjf@hotmail.com wrote:
Well my Angbanding time has continued to be limited, but when I do get a chance to use him Gvee continues to rock. I swapped some EQ, losing some speed and AC but getting all resists save Shards and allowing me to switch to a Blade of Chaos +2 Attacks for my weapon. Seems to be working so far, I just took down the Witch-King. Still only at dl81 but I'm moving down rapidly when I get a chance to play.

On 19.11.2004 19:10 mccoyjf@hotmail.com wrote:
After a long hiatus I have decided to try and complete the quest of Gvee the Kobold and defeat Morgoth! I've been rewarded for my return with a new and improved ring of speed, Elessar, and another one of those ring of power thingies. Advice is always appreciated.

On 20.11.2004 10:20 donalde@kukka.net wrote:
few suggestions: go for Olorin, it boost you mana and reduces fail rate. also, I'd go for Elessar, activation is nice. Caspanion with olorin should put your INT max. You lose some speed (-2) if I am correct, also lose some melee ability. But if you have allready killed Angel uniques, you'll need mode Olorins slays combined with 0% fail rate. (If you haven't killed angel uniques, you might carry BoC as a swap) You may also consider using HXBow of Haradhim, it has incredible to_dam bonus. Combined with some good bolts, you'll do more damage it than in melee or spells.

Gvee has made it down to dl90 and just finished clearing out a greater vault and finding absolutely nothing he could use inside. But I did find Cubragol elsewhere on the level. Next up is Lungothrim and his bodyguards.

On 22.11.2004 05:09 mccoyjf@hotmail.com wrote:
I would use Elessar, donald, except that the Amulet ot Trickery is my only osource of Nexus resistance atm. :( Xbow of Haradrim would probably do the most damage of my bows but now that I have Cubragol it seems to me the added speed is more valuable.

On 27.11.2004 14:27 mccoyjf@hotmail.com wrote:
Gvee is at dl93 now, polishing off some uniques and hoping a really awesome weapon shows up. I've decided to sacrifice some speed and wear both rings of power for the stat boosts and immunity to fire and cold.

Gothmog is a wuss when you have Narya :) He took me for 75 hp with my ranger.
It's awesome that you are doing so well with a little-used race, I sure hope you win!

again, swap trickery for elessar. nexus isn't important at your dlvl, only sometimes annoying. Just detect, and banish nexus vortecies and nexus hounds. It has small damage cap, and not so many monsters have nexus attack. Also, don't underestimate Elessars to_dam bonus, and it's activation. Also, you might consider using Celegorm as a swap, while normally wearing Caspanion thus boosting spellcastig stat INT, allowing you to wear Dor-Lomin.

On 3.12.2004 05:40 mccoyjf@hotmail.com wrote:
At dl97 now. I hadn't really realized that I can handle a little Nexus breath now, but I am sure you are right Donald. So Elessar it is. I wouldn't have wanted to give up Celeborn on account of rDis, but now that I have found Celebrimbor I may go with that and Caspanion. Not sure how big a difference it will make though, since I mostly use my mana to prepare for melee.

It is done. Gvee has slain Morgoth, the Dark Lord, and taken his place as ruler over all that is evil. Power to the kobolds!

The battle was hard but I never came particularly close to dying. I teleported away from time to time and greater recharged my staves of healing and the magi. That allowed me to heal whenever I'd lost even a few hundred hit points, and save my *Healing* and Life potions for after getting Mana Stormed. As for the actual damage dealing, Zarcuthra at speed +33 proved sufficient.

As a parting gift, Morgoth left behind The One Ring! What a sweet guy.
