Low AC is a big deal when wilderness hunting - great eagles, cyclopses, and titans besides the usual dragons blew through my meager +/-40 AC on numerous attempts, and despite the fat HP pool, it all comes tumbling down when you're faced with a +10 speed 10d10 x4 enemy. This problem is alleviated just a tiny bit with an evolution at level 25, when I could broaden my horizons to not just young but also mature dragons. Cue a touch and go period of trying to find half-decent equipment (thank heavens for elvenkind body armor) while also not dying to either melee or breaths. This included a stretch of desperately searching for Moire in Dragon's Lair 71 to get the telepathy crown she wears as the water elemental racial boss reward.

A number of times I was faced with situations of teleporting into fat packs of Zs or ps, and there's no reason this elemental should've survived but by chance. Perhaps not surprisingly, however, everything got stupendously easy when I started finding decent equipment after level 45ish (nenya, vamp/*evil weapons, +15 speed ring, anti-summoning). It could just be the combo of all that useful stuff plus the water elemental's innate corrosive attacks, but by that stage in the game, very few uniques felt like a threat, and it was my turn to slam rather than be slammed. Except for that one time an ultimate magus double-manastormed me. And that time the Destroyer appeared as the DL 88 boss.

Didn't get much use of the water elemental spells besides the occasional water ball pot shots. Too technical for me. Also of note is the race's not-great device skills - disintegration allowed, but not rockets, and most things were around 2% fail (in this version, at least).

Sort of surprised at how short this go-around was, looks like it might be my fastest win. I suppose it's because the lategame uniques can soak up a lot of time if they summon/if you have to be extra careful/if you can't find them in the first place. But in this case, with vamp, anti-summon, and 900 damage vs. evil, nothing could really handle me, and I felt confident going into the Serpent without having blanked the unique list. Feels like it would've been 6 hours to reach 40, 9 to reach 50, then the endgame, whereas it's typically 6-8 to reach 40, 13 to reach 50, and the rest is spent doing a death dance with lategame summoners for me. Anyway, it all worked out, and I even exceeded 150 AC for the Serpent.

So where are we at? Win rate: An acceptable ~4%. Post-level 25 win rate: A descending ~15%. Until next time.
