I knew I could win a spellcaster if I just put a little thought and a ton of patience into it. The lich spellset isn't particularly powerful before nether ball at 25, and the total HP presents the whole wet tissue-paper problem, but I didn't realize until later on that I was playing with a 114% life rating. So by playing extremely carefully and basically never meleeing anything, the levels ticked up. The spell failures ticked down. Nether ball transitioned into mana bolt (ice bolt doesn't sit well with me because I'd prefer consistent, limited damage rather than the inconsistently higher dice/SP cost of ice bolt). Mana bolt transitioned into unique-hunting with summon greater undead and the zephyr lord/hound parade. The items started to drop, the resistances started to fill out, things started to come together. But for most of the lategame I was running with sub-800 HP (maybe 550 at level 45?), and it wasn't until Olympus that I'd find some slick garb to put me over 850.

The big deal for lich is becoming an archlich at level 50, which grants three main things: Mana storm, passwall, and telepathy. To be honest I didn't even realize it granted telepathy until it was time to fight J, but since the Palantir is so amazingly useful otherwise, I'm not sure I'd have switched it out even if I knew. Meanwhile, passwall reduces incoming storm and breath damage, so instead of getting completely slammed by Nodens and Athena, I could sit and take those hits with only one healing charge. And obviously being immune to charge drainers by virtue of being across the screen from them is a nice perk of being a ranged character. It's much easier to "control" the battle when you have consistent damage from mana storm at 6-8% failure while the maximum anyone can do to you is mitigated by the ability to just walk away into a wall.

Of course there were lategame trouble spots. Athena's ultimate maguses are extremely spooky with less than 800 HP even when occupying a wall. A few summoners also have innate reflection, meaning they can't really be safely killed with bolts until level 50 and mana storm. Artemis's arrows hurt and the whole "blink away and heal to full" isn't something relegated to the player. But I did kill Morgoth for the first time, as well as the Unicorn. Nothing can handle an unlimited number of mana storms.

Except for Talos. Talos needed about 5000 turns' worth of greater undead attacking him to get his HP low enough for a few crossbow bolts to finish him off. And there were a few misc uniques like those level 16 and 17 stronghold duders Mulu and whatshisface who needed 75 recalls to even encounter. Same with Talos, in that it took probably 100 recalls at both Olympus 90 and Angband 90 before he showed up, and since I didn't have the correct setup initially, I had to bring a crossbow for the big J fight and hope for a summon. But it all went smoothly in the end, and Vilya dropped in Heaven, where I also had some fun obliterating paladins by the dozen.

An earlier lich of mine reached roughly level 40 but couldn't pull it off, meanwhile this one had some great stuff handed to it (early telepathy in the Theoden axe, early Hithlomir, earlyish soulsword). Vecna's crown is awesome. The Olympian stuff is also awesome, it's just that it's fairly niche (besides Hades) and has the permanent curse deal. Lich also is flexible with equipment, with only reduced mana by weight, so I was dual-wielding for the entire game and probably maxed out my body armour at 20 lbs before getting lighter. A very versatile character overall, and highly stealthy. Once you reach level 50, it makes for a great powertrip, mana storming everything in sight. And with this, my win rate is probably a solid 1.5%, although I'd like to think that of the characters I really tried and didn't carelessly splat 5 minutes in, it might be as high as 3%!
