The wilderness has become much more scummable since this class was designed, and, of course, I decided to exploit this (rather than fix it :). I walked up to the water north of town, tip toed around some hydras (including Scylla), teleported away from a Lizard King and then Grendel, and finally landed next to what I was looking for all along: A pack of Water Hounds! You can try the swamps for them, and it is much safer down there, but a CL1 beholder can't kill much so they need to use their starting devices and you'll end up wasting charges on frogs and nagas. I killed 3 hounds, I think, and this was good for CL10.

No need to be greedy :)

After a brief and frustrating coding attempt to make the Warg quest not stair scummable, I resigned to leave well enough alone. (There's an option for this, but it doesn't work, so you need to figure out why it doesn't work. And so forth ... sigh).

So, wargs down and I got a miracle damage boosting combat ring. Well, only +3 but better than my usual result. Then, back to the wilderness since there were no teleport scrolls for sale which means I need to explore more, then wait more, then come back. I managed an entire pack of cold hounds this time and was fighting thru some fire hounds, a fire vortex and various humanoids in concert with a pack of snotlings when Lady Zhurong showed up with her whip of fire! I lack fire resistance, and decided I was just being too bold, so I fled, returned to Outpost, bought my teleport scrolls (yay!) and headed overland for Morivant. Now, a particular nasty ambush has me considering spending the night in the Orc caves. Ambushes are much more common at night and the sun just set, so perhaps I'll explore just a little bit. I really want the L6 quest and my guaranteed usable reward, but I guess I can postpone that a while.

If you want beholder power, I guess you have to earn it. Wow ... I'm struggling against trench wyrms, griffons, carrion and even mad bear swarms. It takes so long to kill stuff, but I'm slowly learning which powers to use to get the job done. For example, you can confuse a trench wyrm (keep trying) and slow it (this takes more attempts). At this point, they are relatively safe to melee for the 20 or so rounds they take to kill (They kill me in 4 or 5 rounds of melee!). I really miss my troll who could play in "control arrow mode" :D

My major tactical error so far was discarding my seeing helm upon getting Thengel. That was so dumb! I have no detection and there are light and dark hound packs on every single level. So you get "It breathes. You are helpless!" messages every minute or so. Very annoying and nothing to do about it at the moment. I do have darkness resistance at home but need the AC, and more sadly, the +3 damage. Just wait until I evolve (if ever). There's gonna be some major monster payback!

Too weak for many early quests ... LOL. Actually, my ring findings have all been Protection, until recently. Actually, they went like this:
Protection (Thieve's quest)
Combat (Warg's quest)
Protection
Protection
Protection
Protection
Protection
Protection
Protection
Protection
Elemental Resistance (Purchased at BM in desperation, but shards?)
Speed (Golfimbul ... OK, that made me smile)
Protection

And 4 plain average rings. With 220hp and no Fire res, I'm kinda stuck. So, I'm doing some quests to see if things improve. I'll do my DL12 quest and that should be something usable, but I'm not optimistic.

BTW, +16 speed was nearly not enough, but teleport other saved the day. Also, you can confuse Sasquatches. Yeah, that was kind of important.

Sigh, a simple mediocre ring of combat would nearly double my damage output. In a normal game, I'd probably have 100 hp of damage by this point.

On 28.12.2014 00:02 chris wrote:
Then more archery and finally, oh so finally, a ring of combat! But no damage boost :(

OK, enough. I've cracked the secret to beholder power which I shall never reveal. You can torture me all you like and I will never tell! In about 20 minutes I've gone from 37 damage to 95! Holy melee mayhem, batman! Rings of Combat are now dropping from the skies ;D

And I am [CL27:DL25] 04:39.

As a beholder, dragons are your friend. At first, I just handled young dragons but quickly moved on to the mature variety once a ring of combat with a damage boost spawned. Ancients were a no-go, of course, and even now, I still need to be cautious with them. At this point, I actually should trade some combat for armor class but I like seeing that damage number over 200 ... on a beholder!

On 29.12.2014 12:46 chris wrote:
At this point, ring distributions have improved: 15 protection to 5 combat and 9 archery found in the dungeon. Ratio should be 2:2:1 not 3:1:2. I also managed to buy 5 combat rings using a slight wilderness exploit, which I probably should fix.

Now that you've got these spell stats on the chardumps, I often find myself wondering if the spells that see 0-uses are deadweight or not :)

imo drain mana is pretty awful both as a spell and as an effect -- iirc it doesn't actually stop the monster from casting, it's literally just a vamp that works on casters only?

On 29.12.2014 14:22 chris wrote:
Ah, but Drain Mana on a sleeping monster? Now that is worth trying out!

I really should be using more of my stuff, I guess, but I don't really need it at the moment. Melee (with effects) is doing most of the work now quite well, and elemental bolts are occasionally useful (e.g. against Hagen who disenchants).

Phew ... Made it all the way to Undead Beholder. I confess, though, my last 150k xp was quickly acquired on the surface (Not without risk though, as Gwaihir the Windlord attacks for ~200 damage when your AC is in the 50s!). I was hoping for more ring slots, but I guess that is next form. Still, innate telepathy equals Hammerhand equals gaze melee beat down! Also, innate resist base and a new improved spell set, so things are looking up. But my ultimate form is a loooong way off and I can't imagine surviving that long.

On 29.12.2014 16:18 chris wrote:
In summary, beholder melee is quite effective and I think it is a mistake to play as a pure caster early on. Perhaps once you've reached your ultimate form you can disdain melee, but even then it comes in handy. Damage is good, but not stellar and you only ever get 4 gazes. But the effects are awesome, especially Drain Mana.

Time to roll my DL24 quest right? Nope. This was almost total embarrassment as I swapped out RBlind with Thranduil and don't resist shards. And my quest monster: Botei-building! He hits to blind and breathes shards. When blinded I can do nothing! And my AC is low enough that I get perma-blinded if I stand next to him. But rather than fail the quest, some chance miracle had me swap out scrolls of teleport for rods of escaping. Without that, I'd be dead! Seriously! On DL24 at CL35! Wow ... As it was, I had to wait for him around corners, suck up his shard breath, hope he didn't double move into me. I got one round of melee (and a couple times, zero rounds of melee) and I used my rod of escaping, blinded and typically stunned. Quaff !CCW and repeat. Eventually, I got him.

Good grief! I need to avoid any and all quests for a while :)

Azog after 4 hours. Cloning Pits after 11. Yeah, this is about half speed with the fragile beholder. I've New Lifed for some form of hp, but these are elusive. 18/70 and 80 innate cons all the time, though I did boost my life from 88% to 105%. I'm not convinced I can win without a high intrinsic Con, though, so I'll probably keep going. I can suck up low Int and Dex but need high Con and Life. Is this even a possibility? I'll check the source code ;)

In the pits it was melee, but in the dragon's lair, it is devices. I'll be patient until something pops.

I've been avoiding Maulataurs for what reason again? They seem pretty helpless even with just 200 melee damage per round (and very poor accuracy). I wonder if I can handle Greater Titans as easily?

Actually, melee accuracy had improved without my noticing. I swapped in a high accuracy combo ring more for the stat boosts than anything else, and also reforged for more accuracy. And getting stats up helps too, I guess. Now, the damage is still too low, but I can't have it all!

After my rod of escaping landed me next to a Death mold who promptly trashed Hammerhand (-5 AC and bye bye combat buffs), I swapped to a decent Dragon helm. I really don't like Hammerhand's stealth biff anyway, although I've missed the nexus resistance on occasion. Need to be more careful there!

14 hours to The Old Castle. Perhaps 8 to 10 is normal, so this guy isn't doing too bad. My quest rewards have been low tier, and I almost cried when The Cloning Pits gave Frakir. But actually, I might need that next evolution when I lose innate resist base. And Tulkas is OK. No complaints there :)

I got !NewLives from the Arena Iron Lich and The Mountain guardian, but only needed the first to get what should be enough: 18/120 Str and Con. 103% life. Only 18/70 Int, but I don't think that will be a problem in the end.

I'm in reforge mode at the moment. It's working out OK, but I think at this point I'm just going to get rings of speed without too much else (though Shards and Fear on my last effort are very cool).

Next Post: The Ultimate Beholder! Stay tuned.

Evolutionary perfection! The ultimate form! Behold my power and despair!

Actually, losing my Undead buffs made things a bit awkward, almost canceling out the extra 2 ring slots. In the end, I donned this perma-cursed ring of power just for nether resist. OK, the combat bonuses, speed, stealth, str/int boost etc are nice, but the con and life biff also hurt a bit. I think I lost about 70hp in the deal.

I'll continue with melee for a bit as my spells fail too high and I still need some more Int.

I'm closing in on a good equipment set having finally landed a nice protection ring. Number forty seven is a winner! Also, I have Indra in safekeeping for a nice Int boost should the need arise. Melee in The Arena is crazy good, but then again, I'm hardly at a risk taking depth. I don't want to mess up my fame just yet as I'd like a couple more reforge attempts in the 2Mgp range, and I have the goodies, just not the gold. Too bad I blew 3Mgp on rods just for utilities (enlightenment, detection and stone to mud but I landed speed, healing and another mana balls in the process). So I guess this means I keep doing what I'm doing until CL50. It's working well, so why change it?

Oh, as a funny aside, Santa nearly killed me with his reindeer! Out in the open with AC 70ish meant 500 damage when he summoned them before I got a chance to react. Yikes!

Don't forget Scrolls of Recharging for your Rods...assuming this works?

Well, I did forget about those. But I generally don't like to risk recharging on the fly as it can destroy the item (and will, eventually).

I'm conquering some dungeons, initially to top off my stats but I finally managed to max out at about the 18.5 hour mark. (So I don't think stat potions are too common at all). Still, Layzark, Vecna, Jormungand and Great Cthulhu are on my hit list. We'll see how it goes.

I finally destroyed that awful Nazgul ring and have turned 727 hp into 887. I also maxed out my Con somehow so I can't say how much of that hp biff was due to the ring, but it was certainly noticeable. I still need more speed, so one of my rings needs to go and I'm thinking it is the Con boosting Hellfire. That will put me at 828hp which is tight for the end game. I'm probably not really ready yet after all.

You don't see many people taking out layzark these days!

That manabolt looks pretty good...

Mana Bolt is so variable: 1d343+98 is 99 to 441 damage. That's a large spread! Darkness Storm, on the other hand, is pretty consistently around 400 damage and is my first choice. Except against monsters that resist, like Great Cthulhu, of course. Hmmm ... That guy is going to be tough!

Ah, I misread your fail rate on darkness storm as 11% (not the 6% rating it actually has.)

Actually, unresisted disenchantment hurts a lot! Light is a weaker breath and I could probably manage without thanks to my double blindness resistance. Still, I think all resists are desirable for a low hp build like this one.

And stop dissing my hat!

Especially true of the Yamata-no-Orochi.

I had to bail on Jack of Shadows without dark resistance. Imagine my chagrin then at drawing Cyaegha for my DL76 quest. That MF even turned me into a moron off the bat, plus he resists dark (of course!). Well, I can eat magic and flee with the best of them, so it was only a matter of time before my mana bolts wore him down. Thank goodness he doesn't reflect!

I'll park it and build gold reserves for a while. I'd like a few more reforges, but I don't know why I am so optimistic?
