Picked up some townie and marched him to DL1 of Camelot to swap for a Novice Ranger. But with my super low starting Int, even Magic Missile was unreliable, so I figured I better linger near town a while, picking off wilderness foes from a safe distance (to tolerate strings of spell failures).
First up, a Giant Slug who one shot my mount, and me nearly as well. ?Teleport and Glitter gave a Paladin, and I managed to payback that icky slug and a tiger to boot. Though fighting the tiger was stupid, and I risked 4 Phase Door activations while it was next to me, succeeding every time :)

Stupid town refused to stock ?Teleport, and I grew stubborn, so it was a bit late when I finally undertook the Thieves and Wargs quests. The first reward was a dud (Sustain Str?) but the second was nice (Res Elec and Cold).
Now I was about to look for a Water Troll or 2 to speed up hitting CL15 when I spied a sleeping Lizard King. I couldn't resist luring him into my clutches!
On 9.4.2014 15:40 chris wrote: Lucky is OK, I guess. The skill benefits are largely moot (no melee, no archery, device skill is already high) and the drop benefits as well (no equipment slots). +2 stealth is very nice, though. The hard part will be Con and hp. I doubt Hp will break 700 so it will be a dicey finish. The Int biff should be somewhat surmountable, but maxing out will be difficult so end game spells will probably be unreliable. Definitely a bold challenge choice!
I haven't decided on the best Ring personalities yet. Shrewd is the quick start option but you'll have the same late game hp woes that Lucky gets. But at least your spells will be usable so with Healing, you can probably do OK. Patient might be the best, but the start will be slow with the low Int (but not as bad as Lucky).
Fortunately, this build started with a high innate Int as the second boost went 18 -> 18/44 innate. That is nice and I can only hope Con behaves the same :)
BTW, I'm not sure Sexy allows you to gain pets. Charm definitely is blocked but I don't know about Glitter. So sexy might not work at all!

I like to hang out in the Orc Caves at this point until I am strong enough for Azog. Usually, that happens sometime around CL25. In the meantime, Detect Jewelry applying to the entire level is pure genius even though so many times the jewelry ends up being average. Still, getting there thru the swarms of hounds and other nasties at this depth is often no mean feat and is quite fun.
I got tossed once so far, but managed to recharm my Lizard King. Picking Int every time rather than some Chr was a strategic decision sure to come back to haunt me, but spells are a must and the -2 starting Int really bites deep. Heck, even Str needs a couple of boosts for this guy. When could I possibly ever get around to boosting Con?
On 9.4.2014 17:23 debo wrote: Is it possible to get controlled teleport with this class? It might be a cool challenge to have a mountless win where you just use blink etc. to move around during the fight. I don't know if you can blink onto a staircase and go up or down, but if so you could avoid having a mount at all after a certain point :)
On 9.4.2014 17:44 chris wrote: Dimension Door is possible, but I don't know if you can land on stairs or not. You also will have plenty of uncontrolled teleportation as well as word of recall, so you could just blink about as needed. But I think the low hp might be problematic. At least with a ring bearer, you get to avoid half the damage that normally comes your way!
[CL25:Orc Slayer] 01:43
I ran into Azog quicker than I was prepared for, and took him down with Magic Missiles and Phase Door. It took awhile, but was made easier thanks to my awesome speed which allowed me to pull him out of range of his pack of 100+ orcs and into a huge, empty, cavernous room. Plenty of sp for the job when only paying 1 per shot :)
He dropped 4 pieces of jewelry, but nothing good, and left me just 20xp shy of CL25. Upon advance, I picked up Frost Ball, which is very good. Also, a couple of Chr boosts and an expensive +1 Devotion amulet in the BM for another +1 Chr. Intrinsic Chr appears to be high as well. Could this be a miracle build with high innate Con to boot? Doubtful ...
On 9.4.2014 19:13 chris wrote: [CL25:DL17] 01:54
I forgot to do the early Angband quests: Quest monsters drop jewelry 1 in 2 for their drops but the extra excellent quest reward is automatically jewelry. I got a +5 speed ring from The Variant Maintainer!!
But perhaps even better (?) is this Magic Arrow activation from Mauhur. That's Fingolfin's activation, btw, but nicely parked on a ring of archery of all things :)
On 10.4.2014 15:37 chris wrote: [CL30:DL34] 04:18
As a pure caster, slogging thru monster packs is tedious and often risky thanks to mana depletion. Normally weak monsters suddenly become dangerous! But with patience, I finally made it to CL30 and that wondrous Magic Arrow. Damn, I'm tired of destroying stuff with Frost Ball!
Since I suspected a high fail rate, I picked Int again for CL30 (after !SelfKnowledge, of course). The result was a +2 pop for -6% to fail rates.

Trying to put some pressure on clouded, but it isn't working!
I just went on a Dungeon Guardian frenzy, picking Con each time, and managed to get my innate Con all the way up to 18. Still, hp are too low to risk going much deeper.
My Mystic picked the worst time to abandon me: Right when Ubbo-Sathla gained LOS and caused hallucinations. I spent nearly 25 ?Teleport escaping that situation as the level was jam packed with wide awake monsters and my mana was depleted (I did have Curing, though, so it could have been wose). Finally, I realized I would have to recall to escape, and managed to get away at last. But Ubbo will track you down anywhere on the level and rings can only kill 3 or 4 monsters before needing to rest. This is bad when there are as many as 300 on a level! But I returned with a Master Thief, a _Destruction, 30 !Clarity and took that damn Icky jelly down for my Con boost at last.
I'd like an Angel now :)

After many hours spent around 40 to 42 of the Anti-magic caves, I've come to the realization that perhaps that is a dumb strategy. Something is really off with the monster allocations, probably the result of forbidding monsters that can only melee. The result is that every level is a stinking hound parade, and I simply can't handle packs! I finally scored a Seraph after failing to charm my previous 3 encounters, so ditched my DE Sorcerer for this winged companion. Hopefully, I can hang on to this guy, but I wouldn't count on it for long. I'm heading to DL39 of the Lonely Mountain to hang out, hopefully finding some more !Con.
On 11.4.2014 23:59 chris wrote: I guess only 2 hours at DL40 Anti-magic caves (I headed there after my previous dump at 06:10). Funny, it felt like much longer. Probably because I've been hanging on for dear life, fleeing like the wind, and cringing every time I detect monsters to reveal 50+ in my detection radius!
On 12.4.2014 00:24 clouded wrote: How come monster race casters don't get a little eat magic action like normal mages do? I sort of feel bad that I found clarity because it has made things a hundred times easier, but on the other hand, I think I would have had a lot less fun without it.
On 12.4.2014 02:59 chris wrote: I think perhaps the Lich could use this. But by and large I was struggling before thru my own poor play. Having moved to the Lonely Mountain, things are much smoother going now. Far fewer hounds and much more opportunity for resting, especially with chasms, stone to mud and levitation! Plus the deadly 40 somethings seem to be hanging back, though I did spy one AMHD.
I'm trying to slow my Seraph's inevitable evolution since I don't need the Archon's power just yet.
On 12.4.2014 15:28 chris wrote: [CL39:DL60] 10:37
Well, let's see how long this lasts. My Seraph went on a tossing rampage, removing me 5x while descending in Camelot of all places, all in the space of about 10 minutes of play time. Now, after evolving into an Archon, things have quieted down somewhat, but I've still gotten tossed twice. All 7 times I've managed to recharm, but it has taken 3 or 4 attempts several times. I'm not sure how long I can last against an angry Archon!
Still no nexus resistance. I've gotten pegged with "It breathes nexus" a few times now immediately after recall. Sigh ... I'm trying to get my stats up but it is slow going.
On 12.4.2014 17:17 chris wrote: [CL40:DL60ish] 11:14
I made it all the way to CL40! Still only 73 uniques down, and I must say I lack firepower for anything significant. I managed Fafner but it took 2 runs thru my spell points and was only possible thanks to his lack of levitation (oversight?). Also, I thought my double damage fire balls would dominate an Ent, but it kept hurling boulders my way, stunning me so I couldn't rely on my healing spell. Again, terrain abuse of chasms makes those sorts of battles foregone conclusions, but I did lose some potions in the fray.
So my current strategy is to recall to the top of the Lair, detect and pickup jewelry, and then find the nearest stairs to repeat, recalling back to town if no convenient stairs are nearby. I'll kill mediocre ancient dragons along the way as well as packs of hounds for experience. Vaults are generally avoided.
Hopefully I can pick up that Clarity power too!

Drifting deeper and deeper ...
Quick update: RoS +10 and then a minute later, +14. I wish that meant a bit more but its still not bad. Base speed of +19 should help when getting tossed, but only gives +6 speed to my sluggish Archon ring bearer.

Wow Explosive rune and rune of protection, very nice.
Was curious about Strafing and heroic speed though, i don't think iv'e seen those spells before.
On 12.4.2014 18:30 chris wrote: I finally found 2 sources of Nexus, so I only need 1 more. It's not particularly rare but, rather, with so many resists to cover there will always be a couple of stragglers. Ditto with stat potions.
Strafing is a LOS Phase Door. It, among many other spells, is currently costing too much to warrant use although if I were using devices it might be worth while. Stafing is a really cool ability for shoot and scoot players since you never accidentally blink out of LOS of you opponent.
Heroic Speed is just speed and heroism as you could probably guess. Some artifact has this activation but I can't recall which at the moment.

I snagged a Solar in the Dragon's Lair, so I figured I'd push my luck and run the Cloning Pits while I had levitation. Armed with 30+ !Clarity it was no big deal, especially once I realized that this angel is a STARBURST FLINGING BASTARD!! Holy Cow! It made me a believer :)
Since the CP went so well, I did the OC as well. Resting is the enemy of course, but I never got thrown. Good thing, too, because there is no way in holy heaven that I could kill a Solar to complete the quest. Wow!

My Solar turned cloak and left long ago, as expected. But it was quickly replaced with a Planetar which has only revolted once thus far.
I've taken to leaning on _ManaStorm for supplemental damage, though taking an extra 50hp per round when your hp are this low is not exactly prudent. Still, this allows me to take out many uniques with just one pass thru my sp, or perhaps two in a pinch.
(BTW, I have ideas for addressing the high spell costs but I'm holding off on major game play changes until after comp.)

The Arena is my favorite unique killing ground, but I might have drifted a bit too deep as the uniques are getting much more difficult/risky. I think I will break 600hp eventually, but not much more. This is going to be a very difficult end game!

Tiamat had me worried, but if ever there was a build immune to the dreaded fear aura, this is it! Fire power was a tad shy of what was required, even with 8 Manastorms from my staves. But quaffing !Clarity as Tiamat tried to run away proved sufficient. And now I can launch rockets :)

I *will* get Economical Mana! Only one more essence to go!
Uniques are falling to my devices mostly, though I don't mind tossing in an occasional Mana Ball. So far, my Solar has proved durable (Invulnerability helps) but I'm not so sure it can survive the Serpent toe to toe. For some reason, it waits too long before casting Globe of Invulnerabilty. Sigh ..

I managed Cantoras with a "whatever the f*ing cost" attitude, and look what it got me! Sure, I prevailed but also got taken down to just 44hp on my winning move! Cantoras is definitely one of the tougher uniques, mostly since he summons manastormers with reckless abandon.

A ring on a druj could be hilarious, you can both revel in your immobility together.
On 14.4.2014 17:01 chris wrote: I'm not sure I like the out summoning approach for the Serpent. For one thing, he will hit adjacent monsters to shatter and remove your line of sight, so you really are relegated to the sidelines for the battle. Also, the shatter has the dual effect of quickly removing your summons by entombing them in the walls.
Many more ring bearers are possible including some Vampires as well. I'll definitely consider adding more, including the Disembodied Hand that Strangled People. Now *that* would be cool :)

Golems definitely should not be allowed as they are mindless and can't be tempted by the ring. Orcs, ogres and trolls might be OK, but they are more early game. Giants would be an end game option which I will consider. I'll probably allow some vampire and lich options too.

*YES*
At last, the final essence of Economical Mana to complete my power! It was a long time coming, but oh, so satisfying :) And I swear, I've never had a character find so many *big* rings of speed: 13, 14 and even 18! Not that that matters for me ...
I was saving Sauron for the final battle, but grew tired of destructing him all the time, so I killed him (Hey, it was worth a shot at The One Ring!). It took 2x since he pulled that feet gesturing, monster munchkin, cheating trick. Grrr ... And I'm sure Oberon has been paying attention too.
As for final bearers, I finally picked up Summon Monsters (twice!) so could spam Raphael, I guess. I'm wondering how long I could keep him, though. I really don't like the idea of a revolt during the final battle. Plus, I've had this particular Solar since he was a fledgling Planetar, and while he's thrown quite a few temper tantrums, I've grown rather fond of him as I've watched him grow up.

And very nice to turn off pet offense and summoning while resting near a sleeping Storm Giant to force my pet to heal. I very nearly lost Mr Solar, despite all the invulnerability!
On 16.4.2014 00:48 chris wrote: I tried and failed vs Aphrodite 3 times. At this point in the game, the only uniques left are ones I really can't handle. And Aphrodite summons Nodens, The Unicorn, Hermes, and Master Tonberry 1 in 1. Of all of those, the Master Tonberry is probably the worst as he once stole first move after being summoned, promptly surrounded me with tonberries, who in turn stole some first moves dishing out 600hp of insta-damage. Plus, both Aphrodite and Master Tonberry follow on teleport! Nasty stuff.
I tried the Unicorn, but lacking !Restore Mana that was not going to happen. And I tried Master T, but he got confused by all the destruction and started spamming summon tonberries outside of LOS. OK, 30+ tonberries in waiting, so I'll just dimension door and attack from his exposed rear? Yeah, he gestured at my angel's feet. Sigh ...
Hermes is doable, but with no ESP he is just too annoying. After an hour or so playing with guys I couldn't kill, I decided to pick off Oberon.
For contrast, Oberon required no !RestoreMana at all, so he is really on the easy side compared to some of those other guys. I wonder if Oberon is even in the top ten any more?
After Oberon went so well, I just went for the Serpent. Now, killing as many uniques as I had was plain stupid as the Serpent summoned dungeon guardians 3 times. And that's right, only The Metal Babble remained! Yeah, that was annoying. He also summoned uniques a few times. Guess who's left? Hint: My shiny boss and Morgoth! Yuk!
Lots of destruction. Lots of teleport. A bit of smashing potions against the wall to help out my Solar as well as to haste him up. Lots of Genocide and Mass Genocide. A smidgen of Vengeance too. With hp so low, the battle was definitely not a foregone conclusion. And my Solar definitely got into some trouble at one point.
And yeah, I never went back to look for my boss :)
677hp was not my intention for this race. But you know what, it actually worked out to be quite doable (and fun) so I will leave it alone.
