Switched to mage from necromancer and I also turned autoscum on which has made things more interesting and profitable. Some pretty decent finds early, doriath weapon, hat of serenity, ring with telepathy (and paralysis, have to try and remove that whenever remove curse shows up). Ironman is fun but oh god so slow, almost one million turns and I'm on DL38, obviously thanks to a lot of resting but it still takes forever.

They definitely aren't close to the godly usefulness of the staff of winds, that is for sure.

Unfortunately mages are just built on this sort of trickery though, between blink other, phase door, staff of winds, rod of air, thrust away, wall of force and hockey sticks you have many options to kill things without them being able to attack you. It's less effective against big M since he opens up the level more but you can still do it to an extent.

Ultimately you'd have to mess with vision and targeting, which is a big can of worms. NPP/Sil has it so you can't target around corners, but I find this quite annoying - I don't like being able to see something and not shoot at it, sometimes it isn't obvious at a glance if something is even targetable until you try (this is really bad in pillared rooms for example).

Poscheng has it so that if a monster can see a square next to you, it can hit you with balls/breaths/summons which makes almost every trick ineffective apart from maybe some very edge cases. This works well in poscheng because it is a chaotic variant with more tolerance for unpredictability (see also monster double moves), but it has some weird effects like a monster on the other side of a pillar blasting you with a breath and means you can get hit a lot from unseen things which isn't ideal.

To me, Crawl has it best. You can target any square in vision and player/monster vision is entirely symmetrical, there is also no light system - there aren't any tricks and you will never be hit from something you cannot see. From what I gather it would be tough to do that in Angband though because there are like 5 different types of vision and under everything there is a light system which will always mean there are monsters which should be in view but aren't.
