The reward for the Old Castle is a ?oEnchant Weapon +ToDam?

OK, that's just insulting ;-)

But Avenger's doing really well. He did the Vapor Quest roulette, and picked up:

Extra Resilience (+4 CON)
Extra Legs (+3 Speed)
Telepathy
Face Masked in Illusion (equivalent of +13 CHA)
Harden to Elements
Panic Hit

But! He also picked up:

Strange Noise (-3 Stealth)
Aching Joints (-3 DEX)
Wasting Disease (every so often, take PERMANENT stat damage).

The last one was unbearable, so I headed to Zul to remove mutations. Wasting disease for 4th from last to go. Telepathy Extra Legs remained, and I figured I'm good with that, rather than try again for Harden to Elements.

Cleared Cloning Pits without too much problems, again thanks to Stealth (I even switched out Cloak of Merry for the plain old Elven Cloak (+4 Stealth).

Did a few more Angband quests, when a random Great Storm Wyrm drops my first =oSpeed, a +7. Now, with +15 speed (+3 race, +3 mutation, +7 ring, +2 boots), I felt confident about the Old Castle, and cleared it kind of easily. 4 !oHealing, all on the Raal's Tomes of Destruction.

Ummm ... Old Castle reward should have been: Rapier of the Duelist (1 in 9) or Quickthorn (8 in 9). You seriously got a ?Enchant Weapon? That is a pretty bad bug then. Unfortunately, its hard to test quest rewards at the moment since I have to actually do the quest! You got screwed by a "software bug" :)

All the world, apparently. Archaelogist is similarly screwed. So, note to self, do not copy and paste quest reward lines from the Weaponsmith for other classes, since the Weaponsmith is the only class that doesn't get artifacts out of the Old Castle.

Sorry, Dave :( I had been testing the rewards earlier on, but obviously, completing the quest, even in wizard mode, takes like 20 minutes, so I clearly wasn't about to test every possible class. Somebody owes you a rapier!

The War Hammer of Aule is surprisingly light... I must have been confusing it with Grond ;-) Narse the Black Dragon costed me a !oHealing, but provided that. With its 9d3 hit dice and XDragon, that's an extra 72*2 = 144 damage per round vs. Dragons, which I'm currently hunting for stat potions.

Regarding Saving Throws: This class has -15 to save, which I implemented by giving a base skill of 23 rather than 38 for the Mindcrafter. I'm of the opinion the +30 boost is too weak, and propose the boost should be +15 (to cancel the penalty) + Lev. Anti-magic gives +Lev to saving throw, and I think we should emulate that. Against your foe, you should have effective magic resistance! Thoughts?

Nice weapon, btw!

+15+lev saves sounds good. And actually, now that we're stiffing Duelist CON by -3, we could make WIS -2 or even +0.

One other bug/feature complaint: I can't charge across dark pits even though I levitate. Maybe basic Charge shouldn't allow it, but Acrobatic Charge should definitely allow charging over pits and trees.

Also, challenging a "friendly" monster should make it immediately go hostile.

Nodens is dlvl 92, so he should save 74% of the time. 17 of the 19 rounds are combat, I should get about 4 of each effect. I got 6 *WOUND*s, 3 stuns, 3 wounds, and 0 hamstrings.

Fundamentally, I won because Nodens wasted 3 turns of Anti-Magic, 2 turns of Hand of Doom, 1 turn on Teleport Level, and 1 turn on an optimally bad (for him) summon.

Chris -- anti-magic is a cool effect and all, but shouldn't be used against duelist and other primarily melee classes ;-)

Just those classes? It seems like every class that doesn't cast spells in combat should be excluded from Antimagic (i.e. melee Chaos-Warriors, Paladins, Rangers, Rogues, etc.).

Also, given that the player will save vs. Antimagic a decent amount of the time, it seems like the Antimagic effect needs to be longer... otherwise the monster will spend like 3 turns before finally getting Antimagic vs. the player for 1 turn, and the player will be like, "Oh, OK, I guess I can take a turn now to quaff a !oHealing to top up on HP." Yeah, basically my impression is that Antimagic is making the game easier at the moment.

One thought: Make Antimagic specifically a Spell Revenge effect (that's only considered when the monster takes damage from a spell, rather than an arrow or wand).

Bruce Lee is rather rare, with rarity 85. Colluin is only 45 and Jack of Shadows in only 20 by comparison, so a nice find. Dark was a random high resist.

Anti-magic now has class dependent odds of being used. The duration is 1d3 currently, but let's bump that up since it is "too easy" :D

Winner! Serpent was tougher than expected. I'm supposed to be scoring 40% against him, so every round I should be seeing one of wounding, stunning, and *WOUNDING* but there were several stretches of 2-3 rounds where I just got the normal hit. I left the Great Cthulu alive, and he and Morgoth were the big summons, but I was able to teleport and then destruct them away repeatedly.

Phase Charge is incredibly broken right now (in the player's favor). I originally meant for Phase Charge to take you next to the monster, even if that means you get placed in a wall. Currently, it drops you in the closest open space near the monster that's not a wall or another monster.

I am ashamed to say that I abused this to kill Sauron and the Unicorn of Order with fairly minimal risk to myself. Take the case of Sauron: He was generated in a checkerboard room, and I approached from the southeast corner:

.##.
#p#.
###.
...@

I just kept Phase Charging, which would attack Sauron, and then drop me back in my old position, a wall away from Sauron. Rinse and repeat ~20 times, and Sauron was dead, completely confused and having not made a single offensive action. The Unicorn was similar.. although he would breath Disintegration sometimes and I'd have to move venues, I got a lot of free hits on him. (Didn't work on the Serpent or Gothmog, of course, because they broke walls.)

Chris... this need to be fixed with high priority!

Other than that, I also noticed that my Rapier of the Duelist was only returning about 10-20 HP per round to me with the Vampirism. My damage per round was 104*2, so I thought that would give me the max 50 HP per round against things like Steel Wyrms. Am I missing something?

Best Weapons for the Duelist:

1. Stick of Irresponsibility
2 (if not aggravating). Glaive of Pain
2 (if aggravating). Chainsword
3. Vorpal Blade, Duelist, or Aglarang.

Thoughts on the various abilities:

Charge: Works about as intended. Very useful to moving quickly and for getting the all-important first strike

Strafing: Sees very little use, after a bad strafe in the Killing Fields nearly killed me. Maybe we should let strafing displace monsters?

Disengage: Being used more for a free teleport rather than for an escape. The fact of the matter is, if I'm really desperate, I'll use ?oTeleportLevel. Otherwise, I'd rather use a ?oTeleport and keep the monster marked.

Acrobatic Charge. Works as intended, and sees lots of use, especially against monsters that come with escorts. Displacing (but not killing) the escorts leaves that much less room for the monsters to summon.

Isolation. Never really used. My stealth was good enough that most of the other monsters around were asleep. Maybe the duelist needs to have a Stealth penalty.

Darting Duel. Never really used. The idea seems very in-flavor, but the duelist would prefer to always be next to his enemy: Given his huge bonus to AC, he would rather the enemy try to melee him. Also, it costs more HP to reapproach the enemy the next turn.

Phase Charge. There was the legitimate use (charging at enemies around a corner), and the illegitimate abuse (mentioned above vs. Sauron). Fixing the latter would make this well balanced.

Well, it's unlikely that a Diamond Edge would have been more damage than the Glaive.

(Speed was +31 when confronting the Serpent. Was debating whether to use the =oDamage(+18) or a =oSpeed(+9), and ended up choosing the former. In retrospect, the latter would have given me more chances at Wounds and probably would have been desireable).

I'm puzzled about Phase Charge, and you definitely found (and exploited) a bug. I'm using some built in function for the player movement, and never noticed the behavior you described, but I guess a better have a good long look, as it is clearly broken.

Vampirism only returns damage dice damage, so yeah, with one attack, that would be weak. We should probably change this for the Duelist (and only the Duelist).

So, Chengband is conquered at last ... That didn't take long :D :D

On one of my posts to Chris i think mentioned fundins ball of chain but that was the wrong weapon i ment the ball and chain "iron ball". If weapon weigh is not considered it might be a bit too good choice due to the 1 blow only thing despite the weigh reduction to damage.
