After scoring Corwin in a vault on L42, I decided to gingerly test the lair. With only 420 or so hp, this was not going well, requiring quick healing consumption. But then Thorin showed up just as I was about to pull back and retrench.

I sense my combat prowess waning ... Accuracy vs dragons is only about 40% and my stat biffs have yet to begin!

Of course, it doesn't help staring down an Ancient White Dragon for 5 rounds trying to get evolution to work ;P

Got it! I just needed to balance speed/AC/deadliness just right ... Though I'm still hands off Hell Wyrms and Venom Wyrms. Finding dragons is so darn easy, I think I'll do 500 or so :D

Too bad about next level ... I need the +2 Str,Dex,Con much more than another +3 speed.

Check out my new awesome shooter with killer seeker bolts! Could you imagine if I were a Sniper?

Sometimes it takes 10+ evolutions to get my foe of choice ... I started trying to slow after that sequence, but it is proving too unreliable. Still, there is nothing quite like the speed spread between +28 and +0 :D

I finally decided to bolt for the bottom of the lair, frustrated by my inability to locate a nest of bile wyrms. But instantly on L61 there it lay. So bile wyrms are playing catchup with only 117 slain, while storm wyrms come in second place with 121 and ice wyrms lead all contenders with 123. I expect richer rewards on L72!!

Don't even ask about the Royal Crypt ... I figured Bilbo would be a nice fit for me, but forgot that there are monsters in the quest that teleport away. Really, without an amulet of anti-teleportation, that quest is undoable as I was taking up to 800 damage every single round, courtesy of 4 druj and an army of Nightwalkers. Good thing about that Rewind Time ability ... But I burned 2 !*Healing* and 6 !Healing before I decided the cause was lost (Hey, I did kill one of the skull druj and managed to slow everything else). After Rewind Time, 3 Nightwalkers and some other nasties followed me to town, where I lacked any form of teleport. But I did have a lucky ?MassGenocide in my pack, so I burned that too. And perma-lost 100k xp ... sigh.

Now that a Bile Wyrm dropped a +2 attack ring, I'm feeling better about not getting Bilbo. I'm still exceptionally weak and would love to find a way to not use a shield, but it is doubtful that will happen. Especially not after I reach CL45 ...

@Dave: Honestly, I didn't even know I had Gurthang, but Nain was probably more generally useful, maxed out my str, was my only source of darkness resistance, and is dearer to my heart. But still, I like this vampiric sword better ...

I think I'll stay at L72 until at least the Jewel shows up, maybe longer. Normally, I would head to R'lyeh at this point but that is a guaranteed moron and I can't suck up the -8 swing in Intelligence just yet. I like to hang at L95 or R'lyeh while big baddies like The Destroyer are bottled up as quest targets :D

I found Jack's cloak, but can't seem to swing a good equipment set other than what you see here. Keeping +10 str and +14 con (need +15) is pretty tough. And I need a whopping +18 to dex ... This is too much!

I had a multi-hued dragon nest all lined up for evolution, but as I approached the back side, I ran into a nest of walls, including an outer rim of lesser wall monsters, and a sweet gooey core of greater wall monsters! Yuk! So I had to bail on that move. But I'm sure I'll spot another one ... Its tedious, but with my rod of resistance (Saruman) it should be doable.

Oh, beware evolving Death Drakes!!!

I got the Jewel at last from a Spacetime Wyrm, and somehow, I managed to shuffle my kit to keep telepathy, levitation, most resists. But my Dex was extremely low (often down to just 18/80) and even with good artifacts in every slot, including a nice shield, my AC was about 130 at best. With my Living Computer, 18/130 Str and 110% life rating, together with the early scum of starting 3d10 "extra hp", I was reluctant to try New Life. But I did anyway.

After potion #5 I got this:
Life: 110 -> 89 (Costs 58hp since HD are only d10)
Str: 18/130 -> 18/130
Int: 18/90 -> 18/80
Dex: 18/70 -> 18/130
Con: 18/90 -> 18/120

I decided to suck up the poor life rating since I really need the combat stats. However, my AC is still rather poor at a mere 150, but if I swap Flora (losing my only source of levitation) I can reach 173, which is so so. Healing and resistance will definitely be an issue, but with the Jewel I should be able to find enough potions. I figure I need 200 to 300 !Healing to run the uniques, saving 50 to 60 !*Healing* for the Serpent. Of course, I have 9 staves of healing so I guess its time to start using them!

That's a little better ... I upgrade Hithlomir to Julian with poison resistance, and decide to go with my +11 speed ring. I'd prefer Tulkas but at the moment, I'm trying to reduce the odds of a double move insta-death. My hp are low enough that a Great Wyrm of Chaos can take me out!

AC 200 is much better than 150, and I even managed Ulik the Troll.

Deep in R'lyeh, I've already run into Nodens. I sure wish the game would interrupt the rest command as soon as that guy appears, rather than letting him approach all the way next to me. With lousy device skills, I had to risk a -TeleportOther, but it worked.

Less reliable are the staves of healing, and even a meager Spectral Wyrm required 9 activations, 5 of which were failures! Those dragons actually are not bothered by my 200 AC but usually, they blink a bit giving me time for unreliable healing. This one just stayed put for some reason ...

After I picked up the Moron, I lost my telepathy, then shuffled in Jack and lost my levitation. So when I found a lightning dragon nest, I was unable to spam evolution, required !Resistance to handle the lightning, and even used 3 healings to handle the drowning! But I did pick up Cambeleg at last. Since my hp dipped below 800, I swapped in some aggravating boots to patch up my Con and Int. My AC goes down surprisingly, even though these boots give 13 better AC then Flora!

While I am aggravating, The Harness and Zarcuthra are tempting. Zarcuthra is a better dragon slayer, but against evil foes, Kaladbolg wins, I think. Actually, with the sharpness, maybe not?

Time!

Oh wait, that's not until next level, a mere 1,800,000xp to go. In the meantime, I now enjoy a 219 AC, as well as immunities to fire and acid (nice for staves of healing, though chaos can still destroy them). However, I'm troubled by a lack of blindness resistance and was hoping for my dragon helm to pick that up. Ah well, it got reflection instead :D

On 22.4.2012 18:21 chris wrote:

So while Eviscerator will increase my damage output by another 2x to 2000/rnd, I'm probably OK to win with wimpy Hurin and my current 1078/rnd.

On 22.4.2012 19:24 dzhang wrote:

Wow, that's a long time to level up. Without Evolution, it probably would have taken 5 to 10 hours longer than it did, and this really makes me long for the ultimate power of the kobold!

Thoughts on Stop Time:
[1] It fails at 4% for me. Actually, Athena parentage gives -5% so it would be 9% normally. Perhaps that is high enough? I took Athena so that failure would not cost all my sp!!

[2] With the new Spell Capacity mechanic, you may get too many actions. For example, I can get 9 actions with Incanus, Yasaka and Thranduil, but only 6 without spell capacity (And only 5 if I cast Speed Essentia first). I think I'll put a cap on the number of actions you can take at 6.

First go against Richard Wong went to the Wongster ... But this was only do to him stopping time and crashing the game (The game never recovered from the time stoppage and the game stopped processing keyboard commands. Menu options all responded with "You may not do that right now"). So I had to kill the process and restart. I tried to reproduce the issue in debug mode, but at least a dozen time stoppages all worked without a snag. I've had Hengband do this to me once before, so I think I simply inherited a hard to reproduce bug.

Second go against Mr. Wong was No Contest, despite him being in some crazy AI mode, refusing to fight, but prefering to back away from me and hurl infinite summons my way. Eventually, I destroyed enough of his entourage to cause the pack to change AI, and then quickly dispatched Richard with only a single (non-game-crashing) time stoppage.

My first use of Stop Time was nearly fatal, as I chose Kaschei for my victim. Unable to complete the kill, Kaschei invoked a Mana Storm once time resumed, and his pets also contributed, bringing me down to 100hp. Ah well, Stopping Time is still safer than straight up melee.

Now, I return to spamming Evolution, this time vs a red dragon pit. So far this has netted some decent goodies, including The Falcon Sword of Destruction (worthy of a "Tonberry Boost" should I get lucky) and even an artifact sexy swimsuit. But I prefer Lohengrin as it allows me to finally don Magic Mastery and master those tricky staves of healing. Even the Jewel, prevously prone to consistent runs of 5 to 8 failures on each use, now works like a charm!

I'll continue to evolve, and wait, trimming uniques when possible. I'm stubborn and really want Vilya rather than Tulkas.

I'm doing the Angband power dive, and ran into a totally wacko level at L48. Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love? Gimme some of that!

Her first move was to summon Uriel, Habu and some other unique I can't remember. Uh, OK. Teleport. Lure. Kill. Kill.

Next, I get the Cat Lord! Teleport Away. Kill.

Then, I get Hades. Hmmmm... I'm on L48, no? He can't be teleported. But Aphrodite can, and is. Then *Destruction*.

Then, I get Athena! Wha???!

Finally, I get Aphrodite!! I stopped time for the final 4 stars while death incarnate, of course.

Now Athena is still about, but I won't touch that :D

BTW, have you used the Railgun for offense yet? I noticed on Debug Mode that +MagicDevice doesn't improve activation damage... maybe it should?

Also, does Economize Mana increase the number of turns you get with Stop Time? I mean, it basically is the same as spending 33% more SP, right? (Just in case you're slightly tempted by Athena...)

On 24.4.2012 00:48 chris wrote:
Actually, Time Lords do not currently benefit from Economize Mana or Spell Power (I can change this if needed). And I capped the number of actions from Stop Time at 6 just to make things fair! (I could get up to 9 actions otherwise using Incanus and Thranduil).

Also, they use devices like warriors, so Railgun, being native to L85, is quite hard to use (80% fail rate?). I haven't managed to activate it a single time when it would be useful, so I gave up trying. But still, Railgun is one awesome shooter and I doubt I will find anything better ;D

I like your idea about device power applying to activations and created a new (reminder) issue.

Any thoughts on a High Priest class? This should be a Wisdom based High Mage, restricted to a single realm (Life, Death, Crusade, Daemon and maybe Nature) with 4 attacks and melee skills between a Mage and a Priest. Rather than Eat Magic, they should have some cool distinguishing talent.

You know what? I decided Aprhrodite needs some love after all, so I called in her alluring apple! +36 speed is enough, and I'm willing to play without sound resistance. I just need another +3 attack ring?

I'll get working on coming up with a good High Priest class. Expect craziness!

I got bored and trumped down for Oberon. My first go failed as the battle went something like:
Oberon commands you to return.
Oberon summons Cyberdemons.
Teleport
Oberon summons Cyberdemons.
Teleport
Destruct.
Attack one round.
Oberon summons Cyberdemons.
Teleport
Oberon commands you to return.
Oberon summons Cyberdemons.

Even at +50 speed, I only managed a single round of attacks to his 4 castings of summon Cyberdemons.

I bailed and grabbed adequate !Restore Mana.
Now the battle went like.
You stop time.
You hit (x30)
You feel time flowing.
Teleport.
Restore Mana.
Repeat (x5)
Winner!

That guy is a world class jerk!

Oh, the failure vs. Hephaestus was legit. I never got more than one star off the guy even with Stop Time and me sucking up 10k damage. I figure 10 !RestoreMana and 10 !*Healing* would have been required, and I had none of each ... sigh.

Vindication after Overgrowth. Even so, The Serpent summoned more than 20 Cyberdemons, many of which gained immunity to *Destruction*. And I forgot my genocide ... Ah well, still, I stopped time every chance I got, nearly dying several times (low of 100hp) once time resumed. For this character, Potion Chugger would have been way preferable to Peerless Tracker, but how could I have known I would have found Telepathy so early?

OK, first pass on High Priest is complete. I also have an idea for the Warsage class that I need to flesh out a bit more. Either that, or complete the Order and Wild schools.
