** Again, spoiler warning for the endgame **

On the run again! This time I didn't find any sharp weapon and therefore had to invest into song of sharpness and use some potions, though this made getting the silmaril rather easy, only two tries and I had it. Maybe I would even have had a fair chance to get a second gem, but that's something to aim for in later games.
Now let's try to stay alive on the ascend...

The sons of Feanor won't be happy about it, but Doriath has just got hold of a Silmaril!

Being cautious with my songs, so I could put a few vampire lords (or Dark Lords;) ) back to sleep I finally mad my way up to the gates, and Morgoth's pet didn't stand a chance where its master couldn't resist my song.

Bit of a quirk: winning isn't really mentioned in the dump anywhere, the last line of the notes was added by myself.

Now I think it's about time to get used to actually hitting things again...

Congratulations!

To the best of my knowledge, you're the first winner post-release, and the first non-combatant winner ever.

By the way, I'm impressed/surprised that you managed with such a meagre overall Stealth score. Were you singing Silence almost whenever you did anything?

On 17.1.2012 13:47 Satyr wrote:
Actually, I was a bit surprised myself when I started playing this type of char that you don't have to invest more into stealth. I did use the song extensively, but only when foes came close (listen is invaluable here), regenerating voice in between.
The bonus for distance (+1 per square?) and closed doors seemed to be enough to keep them quiet.

I don't know if this has been proposed or not, but I think Tuoroth should get the green winner stripe for the ladder. I know it's just cosmetic, but it would look good... the whole, hero waving a winning banner standing on a gigantic heap of dead adventurers kind of thing. The max-depth anomaly is a give-away, combined with the experience pool, but the game is so new that people looking for winners might not know what to look for. And besides, it's a worthy accomplishment!

This and your other sneaker dumps inspired me to give it a shot, Satyr. Thanks! It's quite fun, I can't help but feel a bit like a submariner or something. I lost a _lot_ of characters to stupidity or mischance before I finally got one that seems to have a chance...Speaking of heaps of corpses.

Congratulations!

Yes, funny enough the early levels are in some way far more dangerous than the mid levels, when you have both vanish and listen and a high-power song of silence at your disposal; don't be fooled by the dumps, I burned through quite a lot of early-death chars, too.

The real fun starts in the depths, when whole groups of trolls, you-name-them-raukars etc. patrol the corridors and you know that every single one of them could easily squish you, if it could only find you ...

Wow - that is absolutely awesome.

I've got to get some more (or at least one) characters into the depths.

Does song of silence raise your (effective) overall stealth? because it just says it dampens sound. It doesn't say anything about keeping them from seeing you.

On 20.1.2012 06:19 Satyr wrote:
There's no conceptual difference in Sil between seeing and hearing (at least for monsters), they get a general "perception" check once per turn (+ additional checks if you do something noisy). It's a standard skill check (1d10 + skill) of your stealth vs. their perception and the song of silence effectively adds half your song to your stealth.

On 20.1.2012 12:51 Scatha wrote:
Satyr is pretty much right here. There is a nod towards the difference, in that they get an extra bonus to this check if they can see you (which requires them to be awake), the size of which depends on how many empty spaces are adjacent to you (staying by walls and in corners makes you harder to see) and whether you have the Disguise ability.
