Probably the weight of your armor, every 10 lbs give a -1 penalty. The total weight of your armor is displayed in the last line of the equipment screen.

Satyr is exactly right, and embarrassingly this isn't included in the manual...

Unlike Angband, weapons and armour in Sil come in slightly randomised weights (from 2/3 of normal to 3/2 of normal), so getting lighter armour is useful for Stealthy characters. Weapon weight is normally more important though, with lighter weapons getting better criticals, and heavier weapons allowing more of your strength to apply.

Sword spiders are quite nasty for their depth, but like several other monster types they are territorial ("It does not deign to pursue you." in the monster recall). This means that if you get out of sight of it, it doesn't follow you, and will eventually wander back to its lair. In doing so, it may move into a position where it sees you again though. If you see (or don't see...) a Shadow Spider, I recommend running away around a corner -- unless you have enough light to see them, they are very nasty.
