Smithing has potential to be powerful:
if you find too many forges, forge useless stuff just to get the free ID.
Aim for a skill of 11 at the start, and get rings of evasion and accuracy +2 early on.
Pump that forge skill, or sing your way to aule!
Tons of fun - I'll be diving more quickly now :)

Note that Interesting Rooms in Sil don't always even come with monsters in (but often do have slightly more or slightly tougher monsters than the general dungeon). But I think three is pretty normal. :)
