I started with Listen, and have just finished the first phase of the game, which was staying out of trouble while getting lower, and enough experience for the Song of Lorien. I used the stairs a lot, perhaps more than we might want.

Elbereth really might be too good at the moment. I'm not sure. Best try to abuse it and see how well it goes.
