Victor, you got me interested in cavalry, among other things.

A while back, someone posted a calvalry spectre riding an Ethereal Dragon, confirming that passwall is possible if both you and your mount have it. So, I figure a Spectral Wyrm would make a fine end game pet. Now, the -5 Str for the spectre makes heavy lance usage very difficult, but I've managed to gather enough strength boosts to make it possible. For now, I am in search of a fast Storm Wyrm mount since I lucked into early electricity immunity.

I'll let you in on a trick: Begin farming granite walls in the Tower as early as possible (I started on CL24). Back up against the wall so you don't get tossed, then macro something like: \e6\eR777\r. Keep disturbance options off. Since there are no open squares nearby, you can't get tossed. Since you are low level and granite walls are high level, you will build riding skill quickly by just holding down your macro key. In under 5 minutes, I was a riding Expert! Just make sure you can kill Granite Walls in a single round of melee.

All the dragons are slow! +5. +6. +8. +8. +9 is the best I have spotted so far. Geez. I'd be happy with the normal +10 speed variety at this point.

Intrinsic telepathy means I can finally swap to my Heavy Lance. Hey, the slays are lousy, but what can you do? At least it is +2 to fighting stats.

Scoring kills myself is an art form. I begin by letting my mount breathe, but then I try to time things so that I can shoot for the killing blow, nicely forbidding pet breaths at this point. It doesn't always work as my opponents sometimes continue to chase me even when down to 1 star, but storm wyrms don't fight that well after all and I usually triumph. Of course, I could just kill anything from a distance, but I'm trying to conserve ammo.

Here's another trick. Bag yourself a Law Drake, and head on over to The Tower to scum a Granite Wall. Macro up \eR777\r with disturbance options off. Stand on the stairs and hold down the macro key, only letting go to feed yourself. In about 3 minutes time, you will have a nice Great Wyrm of Law for a mount ... Just keep your fingers crossed that it gets a good speed roll. I got +9, which is OK. But the Great Wyrm of Law is such a devastatingly powerful mount that it puts my recently acquired +12 speed Storm Wyrm to complete and utter shame!

Amazing job so far--superb trick with the granite walls. I haven't tried any Tower scumming yet, but boy does it sound tempting sometimes.

I greatly envy your boots with ImmElec on them. Awesome find!

I absolutely know what you mean by killing blow = art form. My normal sequence of cavalry is to level to around 30 without a mount, then head to a mountain area with fields in it to get a Great Eagle (things are insanely fast, but only have around 250 HP), then progress to a Steel Dragon as soon as I get enough riding skill. This is usually when the discrepancy in damage output starts, as Steel Dragons are SERIOUS ROFLSTOMPERS.

Once your own damage output gets high enough, it is much less of a problem, but it can still be very annoying when your mount takes off that last little bit from that Great Wyrm of Chaos you had just carved, bludgeoned, or jousted up. I think of it as killstealing as I postulate that no loot dropping = mount stole it :)

Eagles are fast!! You can also evolve Hunting Hawks of Julian into them, but I completely lack patience for the early game. I leveled to CL24 normally, than spammed a 5 headed hydra from the swamps and did my Expert riding trick. At that point, I had *El, so a Storm Wyrm seemed logical, but man, Great Wyrms of Law are oh so much better :)

If you are morally opposed to Tower scumming (understandable!) then you can still use Granite Walls to level up a Law Drake. ESP animals is nice, and head over to the forest. It might take 10 minutes for the evolution rather than 3 minutes, and you can't simply hold down a macro key as other nasty monsters might spawn.

What's going on with Stumpy?

Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! Yes!!!!
OMG! A pack of random birds had 3 Lords of Change! Oh, My! I have no haste, and if I get tossed, I am +1 speed so instant dandelion fodder. But those birds are tempting, but how to get to them? The level is difficult, and I'm teleporting around looking for a soft spot to gain a foothold when BAM! I land in the middle of bird central! Holy Cow, I survived that? ?Teleport and only 1 birdy followed, which promptly got thumped down to 1 star and miraculously captured. It cost 1 !Healing, and I'm ready to quaff another :)

Now, I didn't have a chance to probe this guy. Since I killed him without dying, it is probably something like +10 speed rather than the expected +20.

On 7.10.2010 05:13 chris wrote:
Nope, +21 speed! With the perma haste of this mount, I jumped from +11 speed (Hey, I was doing just fine, thank you!) to an amazing, a stupendous, a fantastic +32 freakin' speed! WOW!

I wanted a Spectral Wyrm for what reason?

The game really picks up once you are +33 speed :D I guess at this point I should go do The Cloning Pits, even if I have no interest in Shiva's Boots. I'm now a Master at riding and with my non-existant, non-riding speed, hopefully, this means I will never get thrown off my mount!

On 7.10.2010 06:19 chris wrote:
[CL40:Cloning Pits] 06:17
Well, there is Triple Immunity and the ability to safely ride a Great Wyrm of Power. You just have to want it badly enough, I guess! Actually, with the TY Curse, I don't want it *that* badly at the moment. Maybe if I actually had a GWoP pet?

I'll keep Thanos in mind, though. If I get desperate enough, it is a path to power hitherto unconsidered ...

OK, this is my last trick for the night. I just learned it, in fact. But what is that? A +25 speed spectral wyrm for my steed? Holy Cow! It is the elusive Russian Dragon, Frezier Balzoff!!! Now, I just wish I had a trick for Cold Immunity ... :D

Nice to see it implemented.

I've also had a thought about training riding with a class who can train to 5000 in riding, warrior, paladin, ranger and tourist. What can they ride for example?
They can't ride in the arena and perhaps is better to use true riding weapons.

Stuck as a Beginner in Riding might be rough. You will never gain most of your mount's speed, and will probably get tossed quite often. I've never tried it out, though ...

Boy, it took forever to capture a Unicorn. The first one I spotted, I stupidly tried to take down to 1 star and capture. Except that my mount finished it off from 4 stars before I had a chance. So, another hour of searching, and I at last found another Unicorn, which I promptly tamed by:
[1] Dismounting and bottling up my Lord of Change.
[2] Rodeo. I was base speed +0, which rather sucks. But Unicorns are hardly life threatening, provided nothing else is nearby.

Then, it is 200,000xp to evolve into a Kirin. The Unicorn has no distance attacks, so it is straight melee with hoofs of fury. Thank goodness for Granite Walls! "The Granite Wall: Your pets have killed 4 billion, 322 million, 647 thousand, 212 of these creatures ..."

I only got +17 speed intrinsic, and Kirin's don't perma-haste the way Lords of Change do. Instead, they Summon infinite angels and spam Invulnerability!

On 7.10.2010 20:09 chris wrote:
[CL43:DL71] 08:41
Hmmm ... All that work to get the Kirin, and here I'd much prefer to ride a Great Wyrm of Space Time. I forgot all about this steed, which requires no immunities to use. They are base +15 speed rather than +20, and lack basic resistances so are a bit fragile, but they perma-haste, allow passwall, breathe like the dickens, and summon nice dragons to boot. Also, the Kirin lacks levitation so I couldn't really use it in the Dragon's Lair.

I'm gunning for the Jewel of Judgment, at which point I will power dive to the bottom of R'lyeh and hope to luck into the second ring of power. I still want that Spectral Wyrm for a mount!

I just found my second ego heavy lance: Trump! Now that is a nice find. Not only does it give needed resistance to nexus, and useful regeneration, but it also slays evil. OK, what's a 2x slay worth? Well, quite a bit actually when you weapon is 6d8 to begin with :D

The Witch King of Angmar just got totally annihilated, though the level did point out a need to start carrying *destruction*. I barely was able to find my quest monster as I was hemmed in on all sides by out of control summoners, wall breakers, breeders and tough uniques. Time for full size levels too, I guess.

These blood curses are getting really annoying. This character is 8 for 8. I had a recent character go 11 for 12, and honestly, I really can't remember the last time I didn't get a blood curse. These are only supposed to happen 1 in 2, not every freakin' time!

Sorry, I had to complain. If I don't, I'll keep getting 'em. Gerard's blood curse brought forth 2 more Amberites. Only 4 remain at this point, and Rinaldo (recently summoned) is wanted. And Oberon must be killed. So even if I wanted to start playing conservatively, only Corwin and Benedict would be spared ... sigh.

On 8.10.2010 01:12 chris wrote:

Frick frackin' Destroyer. I had a hunch he was waiting for me, so I went in with:
[1] "Reflection
[2] A spare Space Time Mount.
[3] 40 !Healing (12 used)
[4] 8 charges of _Healing (8 used)

I had to swap mounts 3 times (They heal nicely inside a Capture Ball) and was debating another swap as my current steed was down to just 1200hp. But I pulled it off picking up the coveted Excalipur and Golden Hammer! Also, Bard, but I haven't use shooting in a looong time and would rather cover blindness resistance for the time being.

For a Cavalrist, Sauron the Sorcerer has the potential to totally make you! We're talking *AcFiCoEl in a single equipment slot, allowing for the riding of any mount. But, alas, I got Darnya. He also dropped Narya, but I really want Nenya if I can't have The One Ring. Great Wyrms of Space Time steeds are really nice, but I wonder if they aren't just a bit too slow and fragile for The Serpent of Chaos? I busted The Destroyer OK, but I can't seem to get anywhere against Wahha-Man without my steed or I being in serious trouble. Probably, I need those _Healing again, as I am just too stingy with the potions. He'll only take 10 or so, and I have them to spare ...

Time for Oberon, a very risky proposition.

On 8.10.2010 02:52 chris wrote:
[CL49:Oberon] 12:38
Oberon was a pushover. He and Corwin both Cursed. Rinaldo and Benedict did not, so I went a whopping 10 for 12 on the Blood Curses. But, the entire family of thieving amberites now lies in ruins!

Oberon was quite weak. I had a more difficult time with The Norsa, who at least forced me to swap mounts once. Oberon only took 5 stars of my fragile Space Time steed, and I quaffed !Healing whenever I got down to 710hp. I only needed 4.

Now, The Serpent will clearly own my weak mounts, so I think I will hang out for Cold Immunity. If I get really desperate, there is always Thanos, and hey, its not like I am any stranger to the awful blood curse! (BTW, I have antimagic from Terror Mask, which is clearly the only reason I am still alive).

Ego Heavy Lance #3 from Oberon: Slay Animal. Its hard to top the trump ...

On 8.10.2010 04:36 chris wrote:
[CL50:Serpent] 14:09
No Spectral Wyrm after all. I decided that the second ring of power was stubbornly hiding from me, and that I could win without it. So, I evolved a Sky Drake into a Great Wyrm of Power, used Thanos for triple immunity, sucked up the biffs of aggravate, AFC, and (-11, -12) melee (really, (-19, -20) if you count opportunity costs of Cambeleg). Chucking !Healing against the wall to heal seems rather ineffective (I chucked 20 but only got a single star). But chucking !*Healing* is good for 3 stars are so, and works well. Chucking !Speed for haste circumvents the GWoP's reflection, and the rest is pretty straight forward.

Hand of Doom is annoying, not for me, but for the 9,000 hp damage it does to my mount! Still, I never needed to swap steeds, never used my spectre passwall for the final battle, and had plenty of resources to spare.
