Another option if you like both magic and melee, is half-orc mage. With 13 str and 18 int you can use decent equip and cast just fine, and with a cap of light you're hard to blind.

Thanks for the advice. This character soon died and I started a Half-Elf Ranger eventually. I tried the Hal-Troll but didn't like the penalties in CHR - I hate getting screwed over in the stores. :) Maybe I just need to ignore that part...

Race counts for more than a few points of CHR. Getting some form of ID also counts a lot, and rangers get it latest.

How a paladin? They get detection prayers, and fight almost as well as warriors.
