Nice catch - that's completely broken. It will indeed not beam.

(v1.44) Necromancer spells mana costs need balancing on lower levels at least
As a necro (mainly in O, but the same applies to FA), my main attack spell is Dispel Evil. That's enormously powerful, especially with Soul Siphon. Necros, in early- to mid-game especially, work best by getting amongst monsters and then using dispel or Noxious Fumes. Of course, as a Petty-Dwarf, you have to be really careful not to die

I think you've just been unlucky - there has been no change (I don't believe even an accidental one).

(v1.44) Dark bolt does not beam
I'm running a Lvl24 petty-dwarven necromancer, and in book (b) (Dark Initiation) it says "b) Dark Bolt Lv 8 Mana 3 Fail 5% dam 6d8, beam 14% ... yet I haven't seen it beam once.

(v1.44) Necromancer spell list is boring
First I use spell A in book A to kill things, then spell B in book B, then spell G in book C {why not spell C, would be easier to remember }, as mana allows.
It seems the spells use different damage types, but they scale so badly with level, that I rather use a spell from a higher-level book against resist, than a low-level spell that is not resisted.

(v1.44) Necromancer spells mana costs need balancing on lower levels at least
Generally, without Magestaff I would run out of mana before killing things at all (most monsters show up in groups, it seems, or have rediculous HP).
And with Soul Siphon (seemed thematically fitting to me), there are small windows of opportunity where you can one-shot easy monsters for (nearly) as much mana as the spell cost, but most times, it doesn't do much.
Just fought 10 hill orcs, which came after me one after another, and for the last 3 I had to resort to my trusty Long Bow of Accuracy to put them down, as melee isn't really an option with that char.

(v1.44) I'm missing rods of light - of illumination are getting annoying to use
Haven't found one yet - did you remove them from the game in 1.4? Using RoI every 5 steps gets really annyoing, especially in dungeon corridors. And this can't be for realisms sake - a RoI can permanently light up hall no matter what its size, yet lighting up some straight corridors is impossible unless you do it piece by piece?
This is a pretty hefty nerf for spellcasters and bow users, btw., which IMHO didnt deserve it.

All right, I have tracked down the spoiler issue - which turned out to be a massive quantity (seriously 150ish) of occurrences when I had used monster flags instead of spell flags and vice versa. Luckily, most of them were in the spoiler code, but there were also a few others. For example, I had vaguely noticed that novice shapeshifters never shapeshifted - now I know why.

Thank you for that. And don't believe the spoilers - they're all lies.

Where does the difference come from?
That's very odd - the spoiler file is wrong, but I can't see why that would happen. I will check some more.

Ii think that's just some weirdness with what the birth process is assuming when it starts.

Also, as mentioned in the other thread and the ladder: Can Wiruin really breathe frost with aching numbers of damage?
    Wiruin is very, very nasty.

Comments on the birth process and queries about how much something can breathe. Hmm...

Maybe the Black Market in Khazad Dűm Town sold a faulty one. ^^

Unless I am wrong, and I am never wrong, I am using UT32.

The scroll of acidproofing has no visible icon. I am playing with the Gervais tileset. After identifying an unknown scroll on the floor it became invisible.

Also, the announcement "Robert Ruehlma, the Deathlord thunders ..." has robbed poor Robert of his two "n"s. ^^
