My guess is that you are Full - check your food meter at the bottom of the screen. Walking around for a few turns will fix it.

Look at the bottom of the screen. It will say either fed with a number% or full with a number % (or hungry). If it says "Full" instead of "Fed" then you're slow because you ate too much.

I know this is really stupid that your character eats so much that he gets slowed down by it. But, if that's the case, then you just have to wait it out and your food digest.

If you can find a Potion of Salt Water or a Mushroom of Purging, then it will cure that instantly.

Just make sure you have some food handy...

I'll never understand why the new eating mechanic is so controversial. Anybody complaining about it should eat a 12 inch double pepperoni and try running a half marathon and see how they get on

I should clarify that there have been changes since 4.2.1 which massively increase metabolism when gorged so that time spent slowed is down to a few turns. This change will be in 4.2.2 which will surely be coming out this weekend.

Hunger mechanic was mainly controversial because healing potions used to stuff you very quickly. If I recall correctly, CCW and Healing added 3% and *Healing* 5%. Also back then, the metabolism didn't increase after being slowed at >90% satiation. These two combined, resulted into some "interesting" Morgy-fights.

Because you can stop eating before you get too full for the marathon while @ can not.

Actually the processes of not eating in life and Angband are fairly similar. You just see how full you are, decide whether eating more will make you too full, and then act accordingly. In fact it's even easier in Angband - you are told in precise numbers how full you are and how much fuller food will make you.

Few people stuff themselves before a marathon and I cant imagine someone going on the most dangerous mission he will ever undertake being careless about that. A hobbit going to Bree, yes. Beren before entering Angband, no.

All this is missing the point though isnt it.

Any remotely realistic scenario would circle around not having enough food on the mission, not the dangers of eating too much. And I am sure that was the original idea for roguelikes, too, and it works - in ironman. Only word of recall ruins that minigame for the default mode.

is there not also a mushroom that makes you really fast for a short time, then youre slow for a while until the side effect afterwards wears off?

Mushroom of sprinting. The sprinting effect stacks and lasts a long time. The slowing effect is for 50 turns.
