Maybe I should drop some wands/staves... hold/slow monster, light, wonder, detect invisible...

There are several books, not sure which ones I can use yet, or if I need to keep them in inventory to use the spells from them.
If you are able to use a spell book you can "b"rowse that book in your inventory. You can see whether spells are ready or if you can learn them and at what level.

If you can't browse the book then you can't use it.

In shops, you can "l"ook at the books and if you can use them, you get a list of the spells.

To use learned spells, you need to have the appropriate book in your inventory.

Thanks; so I'm going to need a whole lot of inv slots for books?

As a mage, yes. Other spell casting classes also need the books, at least some, and non-spell-casting classes need scrolls, rods, wands, and staves instead.
Inventory management has always been a big part of the game, hence the sparse slots in your inventory and home.

A web site showed the basic spell book has more spells like cure light wounds, that the book doesn't have in game...

            There's storage in the home?

The classes have different spell books and even the classes with the same books might not be allowed to use them all. (Also, the effects and costs of spells are different for different classes.)
Healing spells are available to priests and paladins.
Also, I think there was a minor healing spell for rogues, but I am not sure.

There is also a new branch of the game with a different distribution of spells and even more special class-related books.

Just found a Zweihander (3d6, +5, +2) on level 1 as a mage... the old 'stuff your class doesn't need'.

Yes, you can drop items in your home, that you might want to use in the future or don't want to carry around all the time, like healing potions, that you want to save for the boss fights.

That was sort of close. I ran into a big room filled with monsters every spot.

So of course I tried to kill the one closest - and a shrieking mushroom aggroed everything.

Every turn I'd have to hit space several times for all the attack messages as they destroyed items in my inventory and did about half my HP in damage.

I tried the big damage activate of the named dagger - it didn't kill the gelatin.

Time for my first use of self teleport. It didn't work (20% chance not to).

Oh crap. Drink a cure serious wounds and try it again. No Mana!? Oh, crap.

OK, phase door scroll. But they're right at me in no time.

Word of recall, phase door again - puts me close to the door of the big room. Another phase door... finally the recall got me up.

Early pits with only monsters are usually not worth the effort. Especially the jelly/mushroom pits can be dangerous for starting charakters.
Use "detect monsters" to avoid them.

It's rangers that get CLW in current release vanilla. Rogues get improved object detection.

What Mondkalb said. Stay away from big groups of monsters. And dont bother to kill jellies and molds, unless they are in your way. They have lousy EXP and the unmoving ones have no drops. So a jelly pit is a double no.

Ya I was trying to think of a way to kill all that - I cast one area effect spell - but it didn't seem it was clear how.

Now there are a lot more heal potions for sale - serious up from 3 to 21, and critical from 0 to 12 - is that normal or should I buy them all?
