IIRC there were some coding change that made lesser egos less likely, and since GV "8" spot always produce at least ego you see more high-quality egos.Did ego weapons of gondolin and HA get beefed up for 3.5? I have never seen so many +20 to +25 bonuses in my life, they are comparable to some of the better artifacts, not that i'm complaining mind you, I like the flexibility, but they are dropping like hot cakes in some of the bigger vaults, they are everywhere.
It's less bad egos, not more good egos, except that less bad is actually more good. Hope that that made sense. I need coffee....Leave a comment:

The speedbonus to elven boots was much needed to make them competitive to pure speed boots. As it is, though, I still end up using speed boots over elven boots most of the time.
Typically, elven boots offer a stealth bonus at the cost of a slight reduction in speed. I think they cap out at 8 speed/X stealth compared to 10 speed for basic boots, and clearing a GV or two at levels 90+ can yield multiple pairs of each, so you actually can expect to have the choice of either boot type with high end numbers.
By this time, however, stealth loses much of its appeal as it has become possible to fight things should they wake up. Moreover, 2 extra speed can make a difference in the endgame kit, allowing for example to swap out an amulet of Trickery for something without speed without dropping below the magic +30 mark. So rather than enjoying +4 stealth or so I keep using my +10 boots for the greater gear flexibility.Leave a comment:

You can inspect items at the floor. You just need to select floor to see what you can inspect there. ("-" for floor)
I think that refers ego "elvenkind". Cloaks, boots etc. except that only elvenkind boots have it it seems.Leave a comment:

[3.5.0] observations, questions
Dear all,
1. The 3.5.0 is a great version to play. Many thanks to everyone who contributed.
2. The lantern of truesight has a "cannot be harmed by fire" description if i inspect it. Does this mean it can be destroyed by acid for example? Other items have an "Can be destroyed by: xxx" description. I think this could be used for all sort of items (lights too). If something cannot be destroyed there is no description, else it says which element can harm the object.
3. Sometimes i identify weapons/items on floor. It would be cool if the (I)nspect command would additional allow to inspect an item on the floor tile you are Standing (besides the equiped / inventory items).
4. The changelog list for 3.5.0 says "Elves get a Speed Bonus". Is that true? I could not notice it until now. Which race class(es) in particular and how big is the Bonus? Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks!
Cheers,

Nah, I don't think you need to change the current implementation of stores. The current setup works just fine - you'd just want to use UI logic so 'g' etc does one thing with piles of objects and a different thing on stores. And you'd want to implement them as separate commands at the game level, too.Leave a comment:

Nethack!

So the store would just be (implementation-wise) a pile of items on the ground, with a few display hacks and modifying the player's money when they get/drop items?Leave a comment:

Clearly the best way to do stores is to stop having a separate UI entirely. When you walk onto a store tile, you can use 'I' to examine, 'g' to buy, etc. just like anywhere else. And you save a load of complexity and the need to have a totally separate UI mode. For functionality, I'm actually a fan of the old two-page one with the commands at the bottom - it's clear, and minimises keystrokes. That said, I don't really hate the current one either.
Something like the object knowledge screen might be nice.
I'd be interested to hear ideas.Leave a comment:

If you want to look at store UI, take a look at Hengband (1.6+ not the current untranslated 2.x). That's got the standard stores plus others and the multi-page house contents (which is the same in whatever town you are in). Standard store behaviour is the same as older variants.
It's also got variant stores - hence my comment upthread about adding things like a smithy to upgrade equipment.
Incidentally, if anyone can get the older version of Hengband working on Mountain Lion, please pm me as I'd like to continue with the game.Leave a comment:

Currently stores very rarely go two page long. Home is where this matter more.Pagination also makes it simpler to increase the size of the house without breaking displays or running out of letters, and would simplify playing with fewer than 25 lines of display (does anyone want to do this? Maybe tiled mode on a handheld?). The only downside is an extra keystroke each time you enter a store to check the second half of its goods selection.
BTW I miss those occasional {90% off} discounts. Could we get those back, even if don't do anything else to stores. Stores are quite boring currently barring BM which has improved. Some added flavor there would not hurt, even if it is just flavor like pints of fine wine in general store.Leave a comment:
