The last time I played NPP, Holcolleth had + 2 speed. (Also INT and WIS IIRC)

I don't recall Holcolleth having speed bonus ever. Maybe you are remembering Colannon? That had +3 speed (that has been nerfed to +2 now, it seems). Though if it was 3.1 -series then majority of things were broken there (kind of like playing tutorial-difficulty level or something like that), so it could be that there were +3 speed bonus in that version.

Just out of interest - is it a pearl ring? ^^

Prudence the High Elf Ranger is pleased to announce that, after 152,662 standard turns, she has found a Ring of Speed +9 in a vault at 3200'. It was guarded by the Mouth of Sauron, a greater draconic Q, and a jabberwock, all three of whom are now residing elsewhere on the level.

Unhastened speed +11/12: time to get physical*.

    * But not with any of the three mentioned above. Hell, no.

+11 would be just about acceptable as a starter ring, I guess.

Having found an Acid I'm down to seven unidentified rings. If there are five slots for randart rings and there's the 'plain gold ring', then that molten pearl ring was indeed a Speed.

It's the RNG's revenge for me opining that it was too easy to get to +30 speed, a week or two back.

TODAY'S TOP TIP: don't go toe-to-toe with a horned reaper when you're travelling at +11.

My gut feeling is that it was a Ring of Speed +17. Possibly more.

I'm nine rings short. I *think* there are always five randart rings plus the One Ring; I've found approximately none of these. So there are three regular rings to go, and it wasn't a Lightning, so it was a 50/50 chance.

My gut feeling is that it was a Ring of Speed +17. Possibly more.

I'd like to stress I was hastened the whole time, but both of them were surprisingly unthreatening. Fundin made some spectacularly bad (from his perspective) summons.

I think Prudence the High Elf Ranger could probably get as far as Sauron with what she's got, just as soon as she finds some speed. Has all resistances bar sound, and a couple of decent undead/demon/dragon slayers.

EDIT: although I'm not even thinking of taking on one of the Big Purple Angels at present, and they're the next three guys in the uniques ranking.

Right, but once again it's not a disaster if that spell is missing; you can continue to adventure even without it. That makes the spellbook it's in a "nice to have, buy it if you run out" type of equipment, not an "immediately retreat to the town if you don't have it" type, like books 1 and 4 would be.

Oh, heck no, besides they would be OoD for DLVL 46.

    Almost forgot:

MCC = Turn Stone to Mud

Sure, you can tunnel or use wands, but it is very handy to build a tunnel towards a monster, retreat, and then break it open from the far end. Or to build an anti-Summoning tunnel in a hurry.

But you probably didn't kill Baphomet and Fundin Bluecloak at +3 speed. I never have enough CON to take them until much later than DL 46.

Have just killed Al-P, Baphomet, and Mr Bluecloak on a single level.

My reward was my first randart lightsource of the game. And it's a poxy room lighter rather than a mapper.

    Still running at +3 speed.
