I've had a suspicion for a number of years that the developers have been gradually making the game "easier". It would be interesting to see someone try this kind of speedrun with an older version, 3.x or even 2.x

There's easier, and there's more streamlined. For example, does rune-based ID make the game easier, or just less painful?

Rune-ID makes pre-rune ID angband intolerable, so gee thanks for ruining the whole back catalogue of angband versions

Oh boy do I agree with this! Having to deal with identify staves and spells in old versions was a seriously major drag...

"In my opinion part of it is in the name. Angband is the fortress of the great evil of the world, Morgoth. Getting to the bottom of it, and killing him, is going to have to be epic. This is not a "let's go on a random Dungeon Crawl to kill some generic monsters and grab loot" exercise, it's an attempt to overthrow the Middle-Earth equivalent of Satan, defeating most of his minions along the way."

But I guess I'm still salty about the topic.

3.1 was terrible. Way easier than 3.0. If you think CLW [potion or mage spell] should be stronger than a 3.0 paladin's healing spell, this was for you.

3.2 was abysmal. It made 3.1 seem hard. I found it impossible to dive fast enough to face a challenge, using every trick I knew.

3.2 was so tragically bad I just quit. The final straw was actually the inspiration for this thread. Someone posted they thought the game could be won in 3 hours, and no one besides me thought that was a bad thing.

I'm trying to play a game of 4.whatever. So far, it's difficulty seems closer to 3.0 than 3.1. If I ever finish, I will post my thoughts.

That old thread was from 2017. I mentioned that I had resorted to playing egoless.

                      .. but .. but ..

Missiles with slays or brands were made slightly less awesomely effective: the multiplier from the slay/brand is added to the launcher multiplier, rather than multiplied by it. So a x3 bow with a x3 brand does x6 damage not x9.
                      they nerfed rangers !!
                      muh x9 shooter !

I play 3.0.9 occasionally (and I would play more if the randart algorithm wasnt so stupid) and while yes, it is harder (than 4), I dont find it that much harder. Longer, for sure, less streamlined, more farming and I very much prefer the range combat there - not enough ammo but higher damage. 4 has become plink archery.

Playing without artifacts would defeat the purpose of my game - finding awesome stuff is what I play for. Upgrading gauntlets of power +4 -> +5 doesnt give me the kicks never mind egoless.

                          Eddie-
4.2 is still easier than 3.0, except for Rogue and Necromancer. 4.2 rogue is fragile and has almost no buff spells. (It's kinda boring.)

Eddie was talking about 3.2 only which was so ridiculously easy he decided to play egoless for the challenge. He did not say it was for fun.

just for a laugh i downloaded 3.0.6, which is the version i started with, and generated a few artifact spoilers. I found a ring of +10 to everything, rings of power with +26 to damage, bows 6x with +3 shots, weapons with +3 blows, Palantirs, an artifact set with multiple instances of +2/3 blows on helms, cloaks.

I think that the history of Angband is pretty much playing the game and checking what is the most broken thing you can exploit, and then exploting it. Over. And Over. Again.
