    V standarts are horribad

this is the fifth (plus failed starts) Troll Paladin i tried to win with this session, with the previous 3 dying to:
    1. no FA after finding !Exp
    2. 1shotted by a nether breather
    3. me being stupid and not moving out of the way of the terrasque after being down to 50hp.
    4. just plain ol lack of consumables + swarm of orcs

i finally got him down to Morgoth. But before finding Deathwrecker, i was seriously scumming for dragon armors. (and then i thought, "i got tons of consumables, let's just go kill these two guys before i get accidentally breathed shards on by Chronos, or something")

I'm not sure if i have *ever* had a standart winner, and now i see why.
Tons of resist holes, if i move one piece i lose pConf, or rNether, or rChaos, and i have no rSound and rShard at all. Had NO pBlind the whole game.

The standard artifact set is really pathetic. Yeah yeah, you're gonna say "ooh but it's got Ringil and whatnot" but what matters is the other stuff.

I mean .. i've had randart sets (just recently) that were redonculous powerful but no rFire (!!), so that can occasionally happen, but broadly speaking randart sets are way, way stronger.

No it's not just the Lights having additional bonuses, it's that the various armors, cloaks, boots, weapons, etc have much more randomized bonuses and resists, instead of a set of powers that make the artifact "what it should be, in the idea of Tolkien". While randarts may lack in "style", they make up in power.

Anyway; here is my troll, Standtroll.

In my last go (also died to nether, I believe), @ had a weapon that dealt nearly 900 against dragons (at clevel 42 or so).

Are you kidding ? With standarts you might not easily get 1000 dam against something, but you almost never have any holes. Well, not important ones - who cares about rsound.

I looked at your dump - are you really wearing elven armor for the rnether ? Thalkettoth (LOST) would have served you better, so would Rohirrim.

For me, rnether is a swap item at best, for Azriel or whatever he is called these days.

And pconf for the final fight ? In the unlikely case you get confused you can pop a !*heal*, if really worried.

rNether is necessary due to the side effect of nether being XP drain, EVEN with HL. I'm not made of potions of RLL.
And, once below DL65, it's vital.

yes, Osse breathes nether. So do nether hounds. And those hounds weho breathe everything, and astral hounds, and those vortexes who breathe everything. And death drakes.(i think dreads have nether attacks as well, and i'm sure a dozen or so undead)

I totally agree with Estie here. You've got to be kidding. With standarts it is definitely easier to guarantee a suitable kit for taking on the Big Bosses, and usually there are very few resistance holes other than maybe rNether and pStun.

But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

What I'm hearing is I need to nerf randarts again.

No, no, no. If you really want to power them down, please oh please also nerf the ego items. Otherwise the randomness is gone because the equipment will consist mostly of ego items.

Even better, of course, would be to make random egos.

Pretty much, yeah. Nether resist is *way* too common. It should be hard to get.

I didn't catch that he'd got two of the very best artifacts in the game. Part of the problem is that H-T is not a great choice for paladin, as it's really hard to get 5 blows. That said, Trickery is easily a better choice than Elessar.

I would agree - Elessar has been nerfed at some point, it used to have +7/+7 hit/damage bonuses. Trickery or Weaponmastery are my favourites.
