For X-Y, X is the monster (danger) level and you get that feeling immediately on entering a level. Y is the treasure level. Both range from 1 to 9. There are a lot of opinions on how to interpret these numbers, some choosing not to display them at all.
A monster pit will inflate the first number - though if you don't map/detect and stumble into the pit you will not think the number is inflated.
A number of things do not figure into the treasure number (monster drops, loot in chests, loot in rubble).

Oh, so that's what those numbers are in the status line. I was wondering about that.
Mace of Disruption of *Slay Orc* (5d8) (+7, +8) <+1>
+1 dexterity.
Slays undead, orcs.
Provides resistance to Lightning.
But it was too heavy to wield until I got back to town and bought a Ring of Strength +2 from the Black Market.
But first, I found a Wand of Drain Life on my second recon of DL1. I cannot tell you what a pleasure it was to just nail Smeagol with ease instead of doing the usual dance.
Also before DL5: two Short Bows of the Nazgul (boo) and an Ethereal Cloak of Stealth [0, +17] <+2> (yay). Though I did have to wade through an insect zoo full of out-of-level monsters on a 9-7 level to get it.
And Smeagol just dropped a Leather Shield of Resistance [8, +7] on DL15.
i think we can agree that getting Wrath of God, which gives a level feeling of -8 on DL98, from Maggot, in town, is probably the most ridiculous dice roll we've seen insofar.
My first game in 4.2.2 and just got 2-9 on DL 5.
Let's see what it is...
Hopefully something that helps me recover from Ungolianth literally hacking the game and taking revenge beyond grave on my CL49 paladin in my last 4.2.1 game (I kid not...)
This got insane:
Level 19, the opposite numbers, 9-2. Don't know yet what the 9 is, probably a pit and I don't know if I want to hang around to find out because this happened:
Ring of Speed <+10>:
Dropped by an orc archer at 950 feet (level 19)
