first win: high elf rogue using r2041

I found angband a couple months ago and have been enjoying playing it since. That a single character can descend 100 levels and not die once is mind boggling if you’ve never done played a game like that before.

Since I got quickly frustrated with the “make it to dlvl 10, die to a unique I’d never seen, start over, and make it to dlvl 12 etc.”, I used a “simulated annealing” technique to learn the game. First, I blatantly cheated (e.g. cannot die, knowledge of item creation, etc.). Gradually I reduced the number of cheats (e.g. can die but knowledge of item creation and monster information) until I finally beat it legitimately.

I think the most fun and useful exercise I did as far as learning the game was to use the debug interface to make a character with the most powerful items and port him to level 99 and then 100 without killing any of the other uniques besides S and P. Most of this was with a ranger, but I wanted to try something different, so I used a rogue instead – plus having treasure detection as a spell is super useful.

    A brief recap:

This was with the newest nightly build (r2041), random artifacts, with a HE rogue.

I got lucky and found some BoS +8 very early, ~dlvl 10-15, but didn’t find an artifact weapon until dlvl 22. The first artifact weapon was pretty terrible – a 3d5 main gauche (+6,+16) with nothing else, but it gave me ~90-100 dmg per round, which was enough to kill most things. At dlvl 39, clvl 29 I found a battle axe with a few slays and +5 speed. I used that as my main weapon for quite some time.

My first encounter of note was with Intagnast on dlvl 48 - after losing a significant number of potions/scrolls to breaths, and narrowly escaping, I found a sword with Im Fire lying on the floor in the next room. Go figure.

In dlvl 50s and 60s, I really gained a lot of power - I found ESP on anything until I found a helm on dlvl 53 clvl 33, but once I found that I had to lose rConf – I ended up keeping the rConf helm as a swap which worked markedly well with the plentiful !CCW I had (wear helm, quaff !CCW when confused). I ended up having 98 !CCW in my home and bought ~10 throughout the whole game. On dlvl 57, I found:

    Code:
    g) The Chain Mail of Perneith (-2) [32,+21] (+3) {r everything but ShConfPoCh}
         +3 strength, intelligence, constitution, infravision.
         +15% to searching.
Provides resistance to acid, lightning, fire, cold, fear, light,
dark, blindness, sound, nexus, nether, disenchantment.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
         Prevents paralysis.
which was amazing and served me to the end. On dlvl 67, I found a shield with Im Cold and Im Lightning, and finally on dlvl 75, I found

    Code:
    t) The Pair of Steel Shod Boots of Rauglin [7,+12] (+10) {Im acid rSh 10sp}
         +10 tunneling, speed.
         Provides immunity to acid.
         Provides resistance to fear, shards.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
         Speeds regeneration.

When activated, it hastens you for d20+20 turns.
Takes 270 to 330 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 95.8%
which gave me Im base and rShards, which I had been lacking until that point.

In this game more than in others, I found a lot of pits, and I also finally learned to use staves of dispel evil/power/holiness effectively - i also seemed to find more of these staves. One question I have: does squelching items change the droprate of other items? I seemed to have extremely productive dragon pits (lots of scrolls/good potions/etc.), though maybe that was because of reduced number of breaths/etc.

I used ~30 charges of Wand of Clone Monster on wyrms around dlvl 80 – this definitely seems exploitive to me – I'll avoid this in the future.

Speed and sustains were an issue to the end, and I never was really happy with my rings – until about dlvl 60 I was using rings of damage. The earlier artifact rings are never as good as a plain RoS, which to me is an undesirable game mechanic. In the end, I used an amulet of sustenance and only had 29 speed hasted using a +11 RoS.

The fight against P (and S) was won in melee with

    Code:
    a) The Awl-Pike of Nathiar (7d8) (+11,+17) {kDem sUnEv}
         Slays evil creatures, undead, trolls.
         *Slays* demons.
         Branded with acid.
         Provides resistance to fear.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
         Feather Falling.

         Combat info:
         5 blows/round.
Average damage/hit: 175.6 vs. evil creatures, 212.2 vs. undead,
212.2 vs. trolls, 212.2 vs. creatures not resistant to acid, 285.2
vs. demons, and 102.5 vs. others.
I used a few banishes, a few runes of protection, teleported twice - the second time when Azriel and Kronos showed up, and kept heroism/berserker/Prot Evil (does this help this deep in the game?), shield, and rPois up as best as I could. I used ~3-4 big potions, mainly phase door and CLW or Potions of Healing.

The other comment I have is with regard to the pace – it seems “To dive, or not to dive” is a frequent topic of discussion here. I didn't really scum any levels, except for 0 once after a bad experience with some time hounds (how do you quickly buy out stores??), and 98 once or twice after S was dead hoping for another artifact ring, but I also wouldn’t describe what I did as “clearing” either. I hit clvl 50 on dlvl 98 and I had more than enough consumables at the end, so I’m sure someone more experienced could have won the game much sooner. I also felt reasonably challenged by the uniques as I progressed and had killed most of them as I came across them - the purple As are the toughest bosses in the game IMO. When I finally went to dlvl 100, there were 91 uniques dead, I think. The pace seemed “right” to me, as from a game mechanic point of view, I think you would want to reach “ultimate” power right before the final fight. In case anyone wants to plot clvl vs turns and dlvl vs turns, here is the data:

    Code:
    Turns dlvl clvl
    14469	200	5
    85569	400	10
    179860	650	15
    234594	950	20
    283514	1300	25
    367395	2050	30
    432784	2750	35
    603288	3400	40
    651545	4150	45
    692689	4900	50
Lastly, randarts seem a little unbalanced – though only one example, the palantir is overpowered without aggravation. In general, the higher generation chance of the upper tier items means you’ll probably get an amazing drop earlier in the game than in standard game. I found 99 artifacts during this game as a reference. Some powers which may have lower costs (e.g. free action) showed up on pretty much everything good. As an aside, it would be really cool if some of the uniques could be randomized.

Thank you developers and maintainers for keeping this game around – who knew ASCII screens would be so fun.

A newbie beats Angband within a few months of finding it? That's it, the game needs to be harder.

Seriously, congrats. You found some nice equipment though. BoS +10 that also activate for haste? All four immunities? A weapon that does almost 200 damage/blow against evil? Yikes. So your next challenge is to go artifactless.

Well that's RNG for ya, agree that pretty kick-ass gear. But going with 29 speed in the end, hehe, it WOULD have been more like the RNG to double manastorm ...

      Grats.

PS. Deffo run a simulation on randart vs. standart generation chances, in a non-diving-non-clearing game you shouldn't find nearly all of them. My general feeling is that randarts are more common than standarts at the moment for some reason.

I think the same. I actually think the standart generation chances are pretty good right now (in contrast to a previous assessment). Although, I would probably change the generation chances for specific items, overall the number of artifacts in a standart game is very good.

          [QUOTE=bulian;40468]
[\quote]

This is how I started also. I played with save scumming and one a few games with some deaths along the way. Then I won a game while save scumming but never using a backup (with a mage of all classes). I haven't save-scummed since. It also took me about a month or two of playing to get my first save-scumless win, and this was in 3.0.6

You certainly hit the jackpot with your randart allocation. Randarts do tend to be a bit more powerful, but they also should be, since there's always a chance that all the best artifacts wind up being boots or helms. On the other hand, as you've noticed, standart rings of power usually outperform their randart equivalents. Whether randarts too common or not is a current source of debate.

That's a great artifact before stat gain is done. You ought to realize that since it was good enough to kill most things.

However, a halberd (3d5) (+6,+16) would be junk. Weight is a huge deal in a weapon.

Thanks for the feedback and advice for moving forward. I'm definitely not up to trying a no-artifact game just yet . I definitely got very lucky with the artifact allocation. Regarding

you're right, though I guess I meant it as more of it was boring rather than terrible, kind of like an ego bow, with no slays/resists/brands on it. Not that it matters now, but I checked the spoiler file, and it was actually (+16,+6), which is 30 dmg per round less.

I was hoping for some feedback on a couple questions I asked - I've restated them below. Thanks again!

              1. Is there a way to buyout a store easily?

              2. Are scrolls of protection of evil worth keeping? Do priests use this late in the game?

I posted a patch with which you could buy out a store with a couple of keystrokes. Search the forum on buyout button. Tak appears morally opposed to the idea, so it is very unlikely to be incorporated into V any time soon.

For buying out by hand, the key is to squelch a lot. It really speeds up the process not to have to drop/destroy junk you buy.

The scrolls are not worth a slot, but if you find one you might be able to use it. They are most useful for melee chars clearing weakish pits. It doesn't affect monsters native to the second half of the dungeon, so it is pretty pointless late in the game even for free.

To clarify: Protection from Evil only affects monsters that are evil and less than your level. Since your level caps at 50 and monster level caps at 100 (actually 127, but no monster is higher-level than Morgoth at 100), Protection from Evil is usually pretty niche.

1: I macro alt-P to purchase the entire slot (p*\r I think) and alt-K to kill squelched (k! I think). By the time I want to buy out I have most things they sell, except what I want, squelched. Of course I drop all my inventory outside or by the home first. If I wind up with a stack of !rFire, !rCold or something else that stacks I quaff it all before recalling.

2: I don't keep them for the reason Derakon cites, but it's been suggested to me that they are helpful clearing out giant pits to prevent damage. I don't clear those until I have superior speed and can kill most things in 2 rounds. I still take damage from cyclopses and I teleport away titans. Maybe ?pEvil would help against trolls too? I consider it junk. YMMV.

It's useful against most giants, all trolls, some undeads and I think all minor demons. And orcs of course. Not useful against late uniques and monsters.

I like PfE myself, until you get high armor class it really helps on meleeing stuff. Also the repel is real useful on disenchant-hitters. Of course, not late game scrolls, but I usually carry and buy them for quite a long time.

If you have excess gold, read a 12 pack before descending into the dungeon. They last a surprisingly long time. It couldn't hurt anything.
