(clevel:26, dlevel:21 or so) So, normally I wouldn't post a character at this stage, because he's certain to die by level 30 like my last 82753485 characters, but... well... sometimes you just have to post.

Slow, slow start. Made it to level 12 or so without finding any ego items (even the chaos deity gifts were all just magic) so the going was a little slow and cash was tight.

But then Cambeleg dropped off the first dungeon quest boss, and a pair of boots of speed showed up in the armor store (and at like -75% price as well). They were only (+1) but seemed nifty and not terribly expensive. Sold everything and gambled successfully to get the cash, but by the time I had the money they were gone. However, the BM had the randart boots he's wearing AND both of his rings which was probably even better, and combined they were all about the same cost.

Then the Mimic Quest, which has been very good to me for a very long time, possibly even topped past high water marks (Glaive of Pain was darn nice as was the +10 ring of speed its given me in the past), but a scroll of *Acquision* might have been the tops (plus a suit of blue dragon scalemail which provides some awesome armor at this stage of the game).

Was screwing around, and that scroll demanded being maximized, so I ran to R'leyh to read it and survived. Out popped Eonwe and the Dragon Gloves of Slaying (in the bank), which replaced the extremely nice poison branded broadspear of slaying he'd been using.

So, now, the corker. dlevel 21 and laying there on the ground is a (4d5) longsword. Longsword of slaying? Some weird randart? Nope, its actually Ringil.

I assume death is around the corner.

(clevel:36, dlevel:51) Old Castle is down and while it took more resources than I hoped (got the Lesser Titans and most of the Vampire Lords at the same time while also low on mana. Had to burn some !healing to get through it), everything went smoothly. The most frustrating part was unhelpful teleport scrolls refusing to put me close to the wall monsters, so I ended up doing them late and they nearly got out of control. Did the Greater Titans first of course, and the full buffs, full mana and Doomcall combo made them trivial.

People tend to think of Bards as being a weak class, but its really not. It is, however, very limited. The class's power basically revolves around Doomcall. Once you get it skilled up enough (I used a couple spell learns to get it to Mastery faster) and a decent mana pool (say 130-150) to really use it, the world becomes your oyster... as long as you don't try to kill anything that resists sound (a fairly short list) or can't be stunned (a longer list, but still not very long), because they'll wreck you.

Also, bards are the kings of pit clearing. At this point, a troll pit takes 3-4 rounds to clear, and I don't even really have to do anything to make it happen.

So, at level 36 with an 18/200 CHR? The good times are rolling.

Oh, a couple other points. Hastur and Eihort were total pushovers. Always always always bring staffs of Starlight when you hit the dlevel 44, 50 and 54 level bosses because there's a very good chance they'll be Cthulu-related or Thuringwethil, almost all of whom are vulnerable to light, and using those staffs makes them easy kills.

Also, at level 26 or so, Xiombarg "rewarded" him by turning him into a Dark Elf (not necessarily bad) and scrambling his stats (lowest stats in STR and DEX, naturally). Best stat went into CHR so I tried him as a caster for a bit, but it turns out 2 blows/round doesn't work very well. So, polymorph-fest ensued and he got Vampire pretty quickly which rocked. On the downside, he lost the Berserk at will mutation which is awesome and even worse he went from being 113/100 Life rating to 90/100. But Vampire is an excellent race so I'm going with it. Not sure about purging mutations and dumping Xiombarg yet.

(clevel:40, dlevel:62) Making good progress. Picked up a nifty ring of Lordly protection (which will rock if he ever changes races) and the Vorpal Blade off Brand. Was kinda hoping for his crossbow, but these will do nicely, though its hard to see wielding anything but Ringil for the time being. Something disenchanted Crimson (wasn't something big, as I use rDisen swaps for them, maybe a disenchanter beast) which is annoying, but I can't tell if it actually affected anything.

CHA is maxed, which rocks, but CON needs help. Would love to swap in Julian but the CON hit is surprisingly painful and not doable.

(clevel:41, dlevel:75) Uriel dropped some Genji gloves and I'm toying with dual-wielding. Playing with Slayer+Ringil right now as it covers all resists except shards and the life steal is handy, but Vorpal+Ringil is awfully hard to compete with and will probably be the way he goes, if he sticks with dual-wielding. Still not sure. Did a massive test of all the likely seeming weapons in his house to see which he should wield, and the Vorpal Blade and Slayer seemed the two best options, though I'm not feeling very confident I did it optimally.

Didn't realize Uriel was the highest level unique he'd killed. Wasn't an especially hard fight, unlike Rhan-Tegoth who doesn't seem nasty on paper, but kicked Chaoscaller around and forced him to flee.

Yep, Feanor dropped, and off a not especially interesting mid-level unique (Judge Mortis, I think). Seems like an obvious upgrade from Shiva, but he's got SO much speed now that a fair bit of it is going to waste. If he had another useful source of rLight, Ringil might actually get shelved, though swapping back to Shiva is also a viable option.

Starting to feel overwhelmed by the gear options. The low CON and lack of rShards feels like he's gambling everytime he goes into Angband, but if I don't keep his offense strong his mana runs out before the uniques are weak enough to finish off w/o Doomcall. Ugh. I know there's a solution, just having trouble putting the right pieces together.

Xiombarg scrambled his stats at 42, making it so that nothing was above 18/80 (currently) and CHR now maxes at 18/80 in fact, though CON goes to 18/130, so its not too bad, though I was happier with the old confirguration.

"Gothmog, eh? Cool. And a small level. That's handy. Oh, hey, there's Jurt. Ha ha. Easy pickings. Oh, but he's with Iketa and Jisisil. Maybe I'll give them a wide berth. There's Loki, good thing he's asleep, I'll stay away from there, too. Crud, Glaaki and Tzulscha are mixing it up with something I can't see and starting to summon. Oh, they're fighting Combat Eichizen. Sigh. This is going to take a while. Damn, didn't think to bring some *destruction* scrolls with me."

Finally get Gothmog alone for some "quality time" and the first thing he does is summon cyberdemons, Forgot he could do that. Its unfortunate as I'd just shuffled gear to use the Necklace of the Dwarves. Just one resist hole! rShards, naturally.

The cyberdemons resisted being teleported away, and I took it as a sign from the RNG that the level just wasn't gonna happen. Discretion as the better part of valor and all.

(clevel:45, dlevel:90) Nope! Not dead! Just been out of town for a while and busy with other stuff.

Continuing to plug along, and has been hanging around dlevel 90 for a couple levels. He's been picking off uniques and working on his gear. rShards is still a problem but he's had some success working on his health and he's a little less fragile now. A cloak with rShards would still be the #1 item on his Christmas list, in case anyone was thinking of getting him something, though I must admit Dor-Lomin is pretty fantastic and I'd also really like the 4th Bard book.

Also, did the math and realized dual-wielding wasn't doing him any favors now that anything threatening tended to be AC 150+ and a skirmish with Wahha-Man was particularly painful. Expected to go with Vorpal Blade, but Slayer, as everyone knows, is pretty damn awesome and surprisingly won out.

The Palantir is basically a lightsource with +3 CHR right now, which still makes it a really nice lightsource for a Bard.

Weirdly, I have no memory at all of killing Atlach-Nacha or Ungoliant. All the other big uniques I recall with varying amounts of detail, but zip on the big spiders.

I'm working very hard to prevent myself from taking a likely futile shot at the Babble in the Arena. Some awesome poison needle action killed both the Fenghuang and the GWoP, and while I've got his kit for the Babble fight all planned out (need a launcher of extra shots, but pretty much everything else is covered), need to wait for the 4th bard book. Accuracy gear is basically pointless against the Babble, right?

(clevel:47, dlevel:90) Still chilling at dlevel 90 and its working out nicely. After some rocky levels at clevel 42 or so, the levels have mostly calmed down (no more extra small levels with 6 powerhouse uniques within telepathy range) and he's finally got a kit that I'm satisfied with and is working for him (thanks, as usual, to a couple key drops that plugged the right holes).

Also, as usual, finding the right combination meant giving up something he really liked. In this case, it meant swapping from Julian down to Thalkettoth, which, along with other changes, dropped his AC from 160ish down to 117, but CON and CHR are FINALLY maxed and all his resist holes are FINALLY covered, plus he's running around at base +30 speed, so life is good.

One level was pretty much the turning point. He cleared a mature dragon pit which produced 2 !polymorph and 3 ?acquisition. The scrolls didn't produce anything, but the polys were exciting. The first one gave him Exposed (and took away a couple minor mutations), which pretty much would have meant a trip to purge mutations, except that the second one took it away AND gave him Harden which was stupendously awesome.

After getting that, he promptly hunted down Tiamat and pounded her and she dropped Bullseye and Songmaster, and he then went and killed the Witch King who dropped Amber. After that, his gear suddenly came together. As an added plus, his gear was a lot lighter which gave him some more mana, and the combination turned him into a powerhouse.

On his next trip in, he kill Klingsor and the Mouth simultaneously, drank a restore mana potion and then killed Cyaegha and Glaaki back to back. Now that he has all those healing activations, I stopped carrying !healing around with him for a while. Now that he's got a ton of them, I'll probably start again.

Now that he's turned into a battering ram, I'm starting to think about the end-game. I really would like the 4th music book and a launcher with extra shots would be nice. It'll be time to head down to 98 soon.

(clevel:50, dlevel:97) Level 50 is reached and the 4th Music book was FINALLY found. Ran into Cantoras who went summon happy, and instead of focusing on finishing off Cantoras, Chaoscaller cleaned house on the summons, killing many, many greater undead plus Kaschei (who I would never have guessed is higher level than Cantoras). That got him to 50 and produced the missing book plus a bunch of great artifacts.

Lots of great gearing options now. Amber vs Diatribe, Bullseye vs Daisy vs the Shadow Cloak of Aman. Songmaster vs Aglarang (didn't realize you can't use Aglarang in both hands before). Looks like Brand got missed somewhere a while ago, so he'll be sticking with Crimson.

On the one hand, I can't think of a lot of ways to improve his kit. On the other hand, he's under 1,000 health. hmm.

Time for the end.

(clevel:50, dlevel:100) Bah. Died fighting the Serpent.

Oberon was pretty much a pushover since Doomcall could stun him. The Serpent was another matter.

Its been a long, long time since I fought the Serpent, and I never really got comfortable. The Serpent did a lot of summoning, including a TON of uniques, and probably the thing I felt the most out of touch with was distinguishing between what was a manageable summon and what wasn't. Felt like I was panicking and blowing resources on things that weren't necessarily life-threatening.

Also annoying was the uniques. Not so much that they were dangerous as just aggravating. It felt like there was a steady stream of uniques that weren't necessarily threats but had to be taken seriously (Locke, Norsa, Sauron, Cerberus, Surtur, Ymir, etc) flowing at him, one at a time. Spread out enough that I couldn't bunch them up and *destruct* a bunch together, but I really didn't want to waste time on them while the Serpent approached. More than anything else, they kept me off-balance and uncomfortable.

In the end, I'm not entirely sure what killed him. He was double-resisted, on a glyph of protection, and at around 800 hp. There were a number of greater undead around which had been summoned, but I actually viewed the pack of Master Liches and Nether Wraiths as a good thing, a buffer against nastier things. If Vecna was hiding amongst them and I missed him, then, oops.

I suspect the Serpent got at least a double move (wasn't hasted, so +34 speed) and it summoned uniques on one, getting at least Vecna, Cthulu and Cthuga plus escorts, then it later cast Dispel Magic, though the bulk of the damage had apparently been done by then. Maybe that Reaver cast Mana Storm or something.

Ah, well. Disappointing to have fallen short (Serpent was down to about 6 stars at that point) but it was a fun game. Heh, no, I didn't actually play him for 48+ hours. I fell asleep with the game on at least twice and once went to work with the game still on. Still, I felt rusty for most of the game and played darn slow. Actual time spent playing may well have been 20+ hours.

On 13.4.2010 03:13 Elliott wrote:
If not for that, I think he was on pace to take the Serpent, but it was slow going whittling the Serpent down. He had used a little more of his potions than I expected (about 40% of !healing, maybe 25% of the !*healing* and hadn't touched his !Life yet) and the scrolls were fine, EXCEPT that he'd already used more than 2/3 of his ?*Destruction* which was starting to really worry me.
