(clevel:23, dlevel:9) I'd been itching to play a bard again, so I finally jumped in and did it. Beastman, of course, but thinking about some earlier comments I'd made, I decided that Harden to the Elements was in fact more valuable to a Bard than even Chaos Patron, so I scummed for Harden at the start. Finally got it, and off he went.

Uneventful early going. Got Polymorph self early on, and once he was high enough level so that turning himself into a Half-Titan wouldn't cost him the power, he went on a polymorphing spree. I was hoping for Kutar, but when Vampire rolled around for the second time, I went for it instead.

Equipment finds had been somewhat stingy, but when Songweaver went to the Dark Cave to cash in the Arena scroll of acquisition (I was really hoping for some nice elven/resistance armor, with Isildur or the like being a Jackpot), the result was accompanied by booming laughter from the RNG - Colluin.

Its an awesome cloak that provides rBase+rPoison. And activates for rBase+rPoison, just like Harden to the Elements... meaning that the awesome starting power I scummed for is now pretty much useless, having been supplanted by a lucky equipment find.

Sigh. I guess I should be happy, but instead I feel mocked.

Yup. Annoying but managable. Managed to kill that big pushover, Gachapin, anyway. Well, was wielding Hagen and hasted at the time, so was really +1+10.

(clevel:30, dlevel:36) The AC provided by the current equipment configuration has gotten Songweaver past quite a few enemies, including Gachapin, which had real trouble hitting him.

The last few lvels have really gone well. A mindcrafter in a pack of humans (led by a death knight) on dlevel 31 or so dropped the ring of speed. Then on level 32, Songweaver tried to take a step forward, only to discover that It was standing there. After a short fight (during which It had serious trouble hitting Songweaver, too), It coughed up the Spear of Destiny, which took over as his primary weapon (the loss of speed from Hagen hurt, but the one staff of speed provided by the BM hasn't blown up yet, so he was able to hang in fights despite -2 speed).

Ran into the %&*(& Black Bat and scummed him for a couple levels' worth of dragons, before killing it. The dragons, remarkably, dropped the Lays of Beleriand, possibly making this the first time I've had a character find his 4th book before his 3rd book. The dragons also dropped the 4th Trump book and a few 3rd books, so they were a very literate group.

Selling all of those books produced a heap of cash, which was great, because that nifty randart heavy crossbow was for sale in the Bree BM. The other BMs, apparently trying to snag some of Songweaver's newfound wealth, offered cloaks of the bat and boots of speed. The cloak was only 60k and thus affordable, but it only had a (+1) to speed, vs (-8,-11) to combat, so it hardly seemed worthwhile. The boots of speed were 450k and thus unaffordable, but they were only (+2) anyway.

(clevel:30, dlevel:38) Got Morgenstern at level 38, who produced Hammerhand and a nice pattern two-handed sword with rConfusion. That allows switching to Julian's armor (found in a vault in the mid-late 30's), and while he doesn't have rChaos, I think its time to hit the Cloning Pits.

On 31.1.2006 22:51 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
(Clevel:32, dlevel:38) Life is good.

Cloning Pits done, and rather easily at that. Hadn't actually found a source of enlightment the whole game, and only source of rLight was a ring swap I really didn't want to use, so most of the battle was fought in near dark, using only the light from Songweaver's flaming body (sounds painful, but apparently its not).

Persistent teleporting got him into the Queen Ant area before they woke up, resulting in a fire ant kill total of less than 20, which is definitely a record low for me. The random monsters must have been pushovers, because Doomcall killed two of the ones on the right before I even saw what they were, and none of the rest were dangerous. Skeleton T-rex was the worst that I saw.

AC ~160 (including Holy Chant) and speed +6+10 (staff of speed finally blew up when trying to recharge it during the quest, but it got her 80% of the way through) more than made up for her slightly anemic ~240 damage/round (and that's against Evil. Against non-evil, it was maybe 200).

The Gachapins woke up right away, summoned lots of hydras and breathed chaos multiple times (resulting in a couple new mutations, though nothing noteworthy, good or bad), but doubled resists and high AC minimized the hydra problem, and a stash of potions of curing took care of the hallucinations.

rLight is still only coming from a swap (which is annoying for a Vampire), no source of ready rChaos (which isn't critical yet, but will need to be resolved soon), and no rShards (covering that always seems to be a struggle for my characters), but otherwise everything looks pretty darn good. Even have that elven cloak of protection ready to swap for Colluin when Harden to the Elements gets a little more reliable.

On 31.1.2006 22:57 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Since nothing major was summoned, the loot was pretty modest. Boromir was huge, and Aranruth and Rohirrim were also there, but that was it, and only 2 3rd spell books (neither was Music). Even brought some scrolls of teleport back out, as there was nothing move valuable in the quest.

(clevel:33, dlevel:44) Killed Debby at dlevel 44 and she dropped Taratol, plus Stormbringer was in a vault on the same level, and Songweaver managed to kill it as well. Those two weapons, plus Harden to the Elements and Doomcall, pretty much got her through the Arena up to the Black Reaver. Need a few hundred more HP or about +10 more speed and twice the offense to take that guy on.

Made level 33 during that, picked up Endurance and practiced a little, then headed into the Old Castle quest. Still there. Greater titans are down, at a cost of 1 healing potion, and the worst random monster is Nappa, who is level 50, but one of the weakest uniques for his level. Titans summoned Ghantanthoa, who is more of a challenge, but I run into him a lot in the Cloning Pits, and facing him here isn't nearly as bad.

On 1.2.2006 18:13 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
(clevel:35, dlevel:44) Made it. Not too bad. Hardest part was taking on virtually all of the undead plus the Lesser Titans at once after teleporting into the Iron Lich's room, and that was mostly because the Iron Lich summoned a pair of undead beholders. Took 3 potions of healing, but Songweaver handled it nicely.

Terror Mask, Yeduson, and Avavir were the only artifacts, which was disappointing. A ring of speed was in there, but it was (+3) :p. A pair of scrolls of acquisition, though, and perhaps one will be worthwhile. After reading the Dark Elven Lord and Arena scrolls in the Dark Cave, he might try for R'lyeh with these.

Almost failed the Killing Fields quest, which was embarassing. I sometimes forget how bad her stealth is, so I just teleported around until she was close to the entrance. Then blasted through the traps and granite wall while being pursued by a bunch of the outside warriors, only to be greeted by all the inside warriors.

I usually play characters with great stealth, so if they've woken up any of the outside ones getting in, the inside ones are always still asleep, so can dart past them while being pursued by 0-2 outside warriors, quickly kill the General and be on my way.

I totally didn't take the quest seriously and brought minimal healing (30 CCW+15 heroism potions) and Very Bad Stealth meant hacking through all of the warriors. She eventually pulled it off, but had to use multiple charges from her new staff of speed (actually, a few have turned up lately, which has made life easier) which felt wasteful.

Question! Why didn't you just slowly back out of the hall to line up the Warriors of Dawn, and then *poof* TeleportAway like 15 of them?

On 1.2.2006 20:59 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Answer! Because I did the Killing Fields quest not long after the Old Castle quest, she didn't get that rod until during the Old Castle quest (she found her very first potion of Enlightment during that quest, meaning she got the Arena potion of *enlightenment* prior to getting a regular enlightenment potion) so it wasn't really a regular part of the inventory load-out yet. I dumped pretty much everything in the house during the post-Old Castle sorting, and didn't remember to pick it back up before doing the Killing Fields quest.

After nearly getting stuck, I thought to myself, "That rod would have really been handy right about then...".

Habu bites the dust! Nearly quit when Songweaver chased Habu down after he teleported away, and was rebuffing (Habu was down to 4 stars) when I discovered my staff of speed had been drained during the chase. Doh!

Decided to stick it out at +12 speed, and was very appreciative of the stunning power of Doomcall when, with Habu at 2 stars left, he throws his first mana storm of the battle. Habu gets a double move and starts casting another spell! Its Habu's patented way-too-low-dungeon-level double-mana storm of death! But Habu fails his second cast. Its nice fighting opponents that are heaviliy stunned.

The key moment in the battle happened when I saw Scatha hanging out, and decided to tackle him/her before going after Habu. Scatha rewarded the decision with Sacred Knights, which Songweaver used in the battle against Habu. Since Habu breathed chaos a couple times, Songweaver probably wouldn't have surived (well, at a minimum, she would have bailed on the quest) without it.

(clevel:40, dlevel:62) I love doomcall. Songweaver just crushed Bleys. At one point, it looked like she might do it without taking any damage at all. Bleys provided Celegorm and the cloak of Jack of Shadows, both of which were appreciated.

Shortly before, Dworkin dropped the Jewel (which was pretty lucky, but I figure it just makes up for Brand both failing to drop his crossbow AND nuking his own wanted corpse with a Bloodcurse, preventing Songweaver from ever completing the justice list, and also Ishikawa Goemon failing to drop Zantetsuken), which set off a huge round of equipment reshuffling.

Sacred Knights and the Jewel both cover rChaos and are now pretty similar. I'd really like to wear one and then swap Boromir and the Palantir, but they're different slots, so it'd take 4 items to make it work and that's too much inventory waste. The Jewel and the Palantir are too valuable as light sources for her to keep running around without one, which means she now needs to carry a source of rLight, and not just as a swap.

Brand kindly dropped the Glaive of Pain, but Sting worked out to be the least painful way to get rLight, especially considering it also brings +2 CON to the table. So the Glaive sits for now. Hopefully it'll get some use later. Ringil would really be handy.

Glaurung just dropped those boots of speed, and I'm still pondering wether its worth trading (-8,-5) and -11 AC to get +5 speed.

The RNG has a thing for Scythes of Slicing this time. First the Scythe of Slicing of Prism (which I admired greatly but never used because Sting was her source of rLight), then the even more impressive Scythe of Slicing of Force (very impressive damage out of that one, but rLight was still an issue, and its weight plus Force brand would have put a huge dent in her SPs), now finally, a Scythe of Slicing of Pattern, and its even got rLight. Stand aside, Sting. We have a winner!

Her accuracy is awfully bad with it, and I fear that's only partially because of lack of built-up skill. Might ditch Celegorm, and then wield the other ring of extra attacks.

Even better than the value of the current weapon is my anticipation for the future. If the Scythe of Slicing trend continues (and why wouldn't it?), there's only one place for the RNG to go from here, and that's Songmaster. C'mon, RNG. You know you want to give it to me. Its a Bard's weapon, after all...

Great fight against Daoloth on dlevel 64. It did its usual thing of blink around and summoning, kinda like a mini-Chemist. Along the way, it summoned Fundin, Ancalagon, Shuten-Douji, Smaug, and Giganto. What makes the fight newsworthy is that when Daoloth finally went down, it dropped Zantetsuken! I guess its not actually better than the current scythe of slicing, but I really never expected to see it when Ishikawa Goemon didn't have it.

Have found 3 staffs of speed the entire game, and managed to keep them going with careful recharge, but the last one finally gave out. Managed to kill Kenshirou without it, but mostly because Songweaver now has a pet Nightcrawler and it helped quite a bit.

Also just took out the Black Reaver in the arena. Juggled her kit to get HP up to ~750 or so, and went with the pattern scythe for the 600+ damage/round. From previous experience, I thought reavers were vulnerable to stunning, so I went with Doomcall rather than Yavanna, and it proved to be the right call. Forgot that the swaps cost me rDisenchantment and Celegorm got dinged a little, but at least she pulled it off.

Oh, and a white dragon pit produced another staff of speed, so she's in business again.

(clevel:43, dlevel:77) Diatriabe! Either Bannor or Rupart dropped it in the early 70s, and Songweaver is very grateful. Hammerhand was nice, but there's just no comparison.

I was feeling pretty good coming into the level 76 quest, but it went bad quickly. Tiny level with two small, open rooms, connected by a pair of hallways. Started in different rooms, but almost in LoS through the upper hallway. Songweaver heads to the lower hallway to try and dig an anti-summoning corridor or at least get better terrain.

Sadly, I forget that just because high elven rangers aren't my friends, doesn't mean they aren't good. There's a pack of them sleeping in Songweaver's start room, and Cantoras wakes them up by summoning greater undead a few times. By the time the anti-summoning corridor is done, I look up in time to see a pack of reavers and demi-liches charging down at Songweaver, led by the Witch-King, Khamul, Dracula, and Nid-hogg, none of whom were on the level 10 or so turns ago. Plus, the level is tiny, so there's no where to hide.

After a couple panicky teleports, during which I consider the strong chance Songweaver won't survive, I remember that she has the swap places mutation, and a little blue yeek is sitting on the other set of stairs back up. Wham bam, thank you yeek. Quest is failed, but its better than dying.

"Heirlooms of great value"? Which exactly were those? I think the only artifact in the place was Rilia and no ego items worth mentioning. Ok, he did get a couple of potions of Life, which was nice, but those hardly count as heirlooms. Great exp, though.

Happy about the success, Songweaver went after the rest of the quests, finishing them all except the Spawning Pits, which is probably theoretically doable for Songweaver, but almost certainly not worth the risk or effort.

After that, went back to slowly working her way down through Angband. Santa Claus, that right jolly old elf, was kind enough to drop Fingolfin, which means her equipment kit is nearly complete. It was pretty unlikely, but had Fingolfin been generated with rDisenchantment, then swapping Nain and Celegorm for Ringil and Thorin would have been the ultimate long term plan.

Now that plan would leave her short rDisenchantment, so I'm not sure what I should be wishing for. Perhaps Quickthorn, but I'm not sure. Obviously, better rings of speed and extra attacks, Brand, Belthronding (for the Arena if she can somehow get past the GWoP. Haven't decided on the best way to do that one yet.), and probably Thror for the extra CON. If I decided she didn't need ESP, I could swap the randart cloak with rDisenchantment for Jack of Shadows, but I'm not sure how I could manage that.

Got my revenge on Cantoras and even got lucky and beat the GWoP (Bards actually have decent healing with Relief of Yavanna) in the Arena. Kinda crappy with devices, though, so the rod probably won't get much use and her only shot at the Babble is getting lucky with missle weapons, and that's a long shot, especially with her crappy HP. She'll wait until level 50 to try it.

Oh, almost forgot, I've never kill Layzark or Shooting Star either, but that doesn't really both me since they're fairly generic, run-of-the-mill mid-range bad guys.

I dunno if Songweaver is going to have the power to take on the Chemist. Maybe if I can get her CON up to 40, somehow.

Found Thorin, but can't use it because it costs me rLight.

Found Hurin and Cambeleg in a vault (a vault containing Morgoth!). Lems shattered most of the vault, and spotting an axe and some gloves sitting amidst the wreckage was a pleasant sight. Managed to evade Morgoth, teleport away Lems, and kill everything that was left (Hoarmurath and a bunch of greater undead).

Wielding both was worth ~150 HP, and it turns out that I can wield Hurin, swap the ring of extra attacks for a ring of rDisenchantment and still be about even on damage output (and do better against acid resistant monsters and demons). So I did.

Songweaver has become surprisingly powerful, much more so than Songmaster, IMO. Songweaver just plowed through Azriel, Loki, and Godzilla in short order.

If he can cover rDisenchant, I might swap in the ring of mana.

Actually, if you can find RDisenchant, wouldn't it be smarter to swap in Incanus for Shiva's, and then wear a +2 attacks Ring (granted you can find one, of course..)?

Would Incanus and a ring of mana stack?

On 8.2.2006 14:45 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
No, they do not. Just like any resistance, it's a "there or not" effect called Economize Mana.

Incanus also gives improves all spell fail rates by 3%, but I'm not sure if that's present in RoMana as well.

On 8.2.2006 15:30 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Nope. Rings of mana do not help with spell fail rates. Need a ring of wizardry for that. Conveniently, Songweaver's best RoS (+10) also happens to be of Wizardry. Mana would have been better, but I'm not complaining.

A little experimenting showed that you're right. No benefits from wearing more than one "Economize magic" item. However, "Wizardry" stuff does stack, to a limited extent. 2 Rings of Wizardry only give you the benefit once, but if you wear a ring of wizardry plus Incanus, you get the benefit to your spell fail% twice.

While playing with that, I realized I could swap Boromir for the Necklace of the Dwarves and a ring of damage for the ring of rDisenchantment, resulting in a maxed out CON (and just a short while ago I doubted it was achieveable), +4 damage per blow, and rDisenchantment is still covered.

Songweaver is on a roll, knocking off first Wahha-man and Glaaki together, and then Nodens, plus clearing a mid-sized vault containing Uriel and a few other 70's level uniques, netting an incredible haul: Anabasis, Tulkas, Zarcuthra, the Elemental of Ching-Rong, and GoGo.

After playing with it as a swap for a bit, Songweaver has bitten the bullet and swapped Shiva's Avatar for Incanus. Lost almost 20% of his damage output, but boosted his spell casting by 33% and it seems to be a winning trade-off so far. Just ask Nodens.

Swapped Tulkas for the ring of damage. The improved accuracy almost exactly counters the reduced damag, so he gets the speed and AC boosts for free, plus its a his second item that activates for haste. Haste activations are very welcome, as the last of his staves of speed blew up long ago and the neither the dungeon nor the Black Markets have been obliging in quite a while. He's only found and bought 5 the entire game.

Ok, she's level 50 and finally found a long bow of extra shots. Its time to go after the Babble in the Arena. Plan is to go in shooting arrows, then when about to die, start on Fingolfin's challenge and ride it until the mana runs out. I think he can fire 40+ arrows before dying by following that plan. Of course, when I tried to kill the babble with my archer long ago, he fired off 40 arrows and went 0 for 40.

So, while there's an actual chance of success, I'd accept wounding the Babble as a moral victory.

On 8.2.2006 19:35 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Ah, the RNG was feeling cruel. The Babble appeared to be fairly slow, getting a surprisingly small number of double moves, and Songweaver's accuracy was quite good, at one point connecting with back-to-back arrows. She hit it 4 times in her first 15 or so arrows, and it was down to 2 stars. That means its a 5 HP, so Just 1 more hit to kill it. She was almost dead, too, but before going in, I remembered that Psycho-spear cuts through invulnerability, and thus might not be the best thing to use, and used Relief of Yavanna instead.

So while the Babble frantically blinked around, Relief of Yavanna brought Songweaver back to full health and Songweaver kept firing arrows. Unfortunately, she just couldn't land that last hit. After 25 or so misses, the Babble healed a bit, stopped panicking, and started firing back on Songweaver. Her mana was nearly depleted, and the Babble wore her down and beat her.

Songweaver hit with 4 of her first 15 shots, but then missed the next 38. Close, but no cigar.

The level feeling was special, but I never figured out what it was, and even checking the artifact list after, I'm not sure. Maybe the Inro.

Debating whether to go after the Serpent now, or take on the usual last few Serpent buddies first: Destroyer, Morgoth, Unicorn, etc. Those three have been showing up a lot lately, so I'm sure I'll be seeing them again.

Yet another reason why I consider Eat Magic the most important mutation in the game... it functions in the Arena! If you wade through her house inventory, you'll see that I've been stockpiling rods the entire game, with mid-to-high single digits of most of the ball rods, and 19(!) rods of disarming, just in case she somehow got Eat Magic. Battle with the Serpent started rough. After using the rod of healing and 2 potions of healing while being forced to teleport away 3 times before knocking off the Serpent's first star, I was starting to have my doubts.

Songweaver got on a roll after that and whittled the Serpent down to 3 stars in relatively short order. Now the Serpent has gotten back on its feet (so to speak) and in back to back clashes summoned first Special, getting Morgoth, Sauron, the Destroyer and Qlzqlzzzzp (a happy result for the Serpent), and then Guardians, getting Cthulu, Vecna, and the Chamelon King (the Chamleon isn't a problem, but the other two are darn nasty).

I'm still not sure what exactly happened. One minute, she was cheerfully at 650 HP, the next minute she was dead.

My assumption was that the Serpent dispelled magic, then the Balrog breathed fire, then the Serpent got in a couple extra moves, but that doesn't appear to have happened.

The Serpent got a triple move, casting dispel magic, call logrus, and then meleed, and a balrog threw a nether ball, but most of the other monsters were around the corner beating up Fenris. I think on a bloodthirster was nearby. Total, that shouldn't be more than 400 or so damage.

Clearly, something else hit her, but I have no idea what, unless the Balrog got a double move and breathed plasma or the like. Maybe 2 or 3 of the other Balrogs that didn't have LoS opened the round by throwing nether balls that caught Songweaver in the burst radius.

Oh well. Quite disappointing as the Serpent was down to 3 stars, and this character was really fun to play. Great at controlling crowds, buffed herself nicely, and surprisingly tough 1 on 1 as well.

On 9.2.2006 21:00 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Well, Breath Logrus can do up to 6/8 * 600 = 450 damage even with resist (with 25% chance), and two melee attacks that hit would make 0.4 (AC damage reduction) * 121 * 2 = 96.8 damage, so that's 550. Plus the Nether ball, and it seems in the right ball-park.

I'm a bit curious... what song did you have up? If it's Finfolgin's Challenge, I'll bet that was what did you in, with the Dispel Magic and energy loss.

That being said, 650HP is enough for me to melee the Serpent, but not when other monsters are in the area, and Lungorthin was also in the area, and a Breath-Fire from him after being dispelled would be a good 533 HP of damage...

On 10.2.2006 00:55 elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Dave, the Serpent didn't Breathe Logrus, it Invoked it, so the Max damage is more like 400, rather than 600.

As for the song, it varied a bit, but fearful of exactly that happening, I definitely wasn't using Fingolfin. I started the fight using Yavanna, but it quickly became clear that the Serpent does enough damage/round that Yavanna gets overwhelmed and doesn't end up helping all that much.

Plus, the Serpent was really Dispel Magic happy and I completely forgot to bring along the big stacks of speed and resistance potions. Resist wasn't really a problem because of Harden, but I only had the two artifact activates for haste. As a result, I fairly early on switched to the Hobbit song, so at least I'd be hasted reliably. Then when magic was dispelled, I could re-do Harden and, while not at full power, at least was good enough to go another round or two, HP allowing.

Periodically, I'd do Dispelling Chant, which is what I used with Songmaster for the final fight back in Hengband, and if the Serpent surprised me with a double or triple move on its approach and I was still healing with Yavanna or the Book 1 healing song, I'd just let them ride for that battle, not wanting to waste the round.

If I had it to do over again, I'm still not sure which song I'd use. Hobbit Melodies is really appealing, but I'd probably use Dispelling Chant, actually. That battle takes a while, and the damage from DC can really add up.

Hm... I was looking at the available songs, and I had this crazy idea. What about Wrecking Pattern? I don't think the Serpent can disappear due to Earthquakes (or at least that's never happened to me), so I wonder if it takes damage if it fails to dodge, just like the player. That, plus continuous LoS disruption and embedding the summons, might make Wrecking Pattern more effective for the final fight than anything else..?

And actually, why Hobbit Melodies when you have cheap hasting/heroing from Hero's Poem (plus some damage)?

On 10.2.2006 02:58 elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Good questions. Wrecking Pattern might work really well. Never considered it, but it would be an interesting experiment.

The advantage of Hobbit Melodies over Hero's Poem is that Hobbit Melodies is really cheap SP-wise, so when Songweaver had to teleport away, she had plenty of SP left with which to cast the various healing songs. That having been said, I never seriously considered using Hero's Poem, and for the life of me I can't remember why. It does kinda seem custom-made for that fight. Perhaps it was too SP-expensive, but maybe not.
