It gets much easier once you get past the initial low HP. I've been using batform for a nice speed boost and fire spirits as my main plan of attack. Just killed the great goblin and on to lake town to restock, and pick up the third spellbook.

I've been using summons a lot more lately, and they work really well. A fire spirit works great, both as a forward scout (since it lights up stuff as it goes) and for meleeing things while I hide safely off around the corner. Two fire spirits took the big goblin to ~half HP before dying, and then a couple more finished him off. Their speed is nice too.

Batform is good for the speed boost (especially considering how often I'm slowed from encumbrance with my 6 STR), but I just now realized that if I leave batform I get another 11 SP back which would have been very useful earlier. Didn't notice it so much at earlier levels because the SP was so low to begin with.

It was initially very confusing that your familiar/summons don't show any message when they attack. I realize this might end up rather spammy on the messages later on if you have a lot of allies but I think it would be really nice for when you just have the one or two.

I tried an Air spirit summons and it didn't appear to do anything at first - until I realized that air spirits are invisible and I can't see invisible creatures. I was fighting (the also invisible) Smeagol at the time and made for a pretty funny battle, since I couldn't see either side. Just a series of occasional "It misses." :)

Where to next I wonder?

Coincidentally I've just added an option for detailed combat messages for your allies. Feel free to pick it up from SVN. Good to hear it's getting easier...

Continuing on... Barrow Downs and the nearby marshes are cleared... Nar snuck up on me and blinded me for most of the battle, but my four earth elementals took him down with little trouble.

Made it down to the bottom of Mirkwood, but the Elf King is too quick for me to kill. :(

I did find a couple nice randarts along the way though to boost my Wisdom, a bunch of object detection rods and got a few more levels/stats.

I just found a small vault at the bottom of Mirkwood, and my Earth Elementals were very useful... they can pass through walls so they cleared out the whole thing without ever having to expose myself to any danger on the inside. Too bad I didn't have any digger or stone-to-mud - all this unprotected treasure two squares away and I can't get to it!

My main problem with this character has been death by blood debt. How do you avoid this? My best character made it to clvl 12 but with only about 45 hp blood debt from a single earth golem was enough to kill him...

The short answer: several (dozens?) of my characters *have* died to blood dept. This guy is just lucky I guess. :)

Longer answer: You can send your minions into battle without actually being there - I often use detection spells to direct my summons to various enemies, while keeping a good screen safely away. On a staircase. Just so if things start getting hairy you can pop out of there quick enough. The earth elementals are particularly nice because they can go right through the walls so they're easy to direct. Always keep your mana high - the shadow fairy has mana regen so I'm getting at least 1 mana/turn, which is enough to summon and then pay-blood-debt-for most of the early summons every 30-40 turns. With only 3 SIZ to start with it's hard to start, but once you put some points in CON and SIZ, things get easier.

Lastly, if at all possible, avoid summoning more than you're sure you can pay for. It's okay once and a while if you want to take down a guardian quickly, but in general make sure you can always pay the blood debt or have some way of quickly leaving the level. Consider direct damage attack spells as an alternative until you get a bit more SP/HP.
