Boy, I just ran into Raou the Conqueror (ML62) on DL37. It was a big vault that also had Smaug the Golden inside. Now Smaug was a pushover for me, but Raou is completely out of my league. He was guarding this wonderful Mattock, though. And being a Death priest, I am completely unable to bless weapons, so this is one of the few good ones I am able to use! I ended up burning a ?*Destruction* that I found in the vault to "kill" Raou, but he'll be back.

Due to vault craziness, I've been holding my depth here and collecting lots of stat potions. I'm pretty fast, too. I think once I get more proficiency with the Walk Through Wall spell (39% fail) then I will be able to dive a bit deeper. In the meantime, patience seems prudent.

After picking up that superb cloak of boldor (screenshot attached), I felt like I was powerful enough for DL60. So I undertook the long powerdive ... Its frustrating trying to find the double down stairs, even with enlightenment, as they always seemed to be in the last square I detected, and the levels are always large in the lair. At one point, I just burned a !enlightenment in frustration :(

But here I am at last (CL33->CL36 during the dive). I pretty much own dragons with Nain combo'd up with the craft spells of the acting master. Mycen was scarcely a challenge despite my lack of resist sound!

And why the dive to DL60? Well, most of the ladder artifacts are at this depth. I'm particularly interested in Diatribe and Anabasis. I'd probably pass on Bullseye as I think my cloak of boldor is better. But as most Entroband games go, it is a mad dash to DL60, followed by many hours of waiting ... We'll see. The first special level at this depth was just Musashi laying on the ground.

After a lucky find of Amber off some something or other (OK, it was a Great Wyrm of Law, but so what?), I decided to do the Old Castle. I totally lucked out picking up a copy of Necronomicon inside!! Sweet. However, I think the Death realm sucks. Here is what I like about it:
[1] Vampirism True. This is truly one of the best spells in the game. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it is unbeatable. I still favor melee, but using this to heal against mighty dragons as needed makes me quite powerful.

[2] Hellfire. Again, a great spell. A bit hard to cast for me (26% fail is the best I can do), and not something to use until CL50.

[3] Wraithform. Another CL50 spell with a high fail rate. I have Pass Wall in craft, so the only addition is reflection (which craft also has) and 50% damage reduction (which makes it worthwhile, I think).

Really at the moment, the only spell I am using from Death is Vampirism True. Neconomicon means I can ditch my rods of perception, though, but I would have gotten *id* from craft as well.

Other death spells?
[1] Malediction and Stinking Cloud were used early on as my primary offense. They are meaningless now.

[2] Genocide and Mass Genocide are good. I'll take those when I am high enough level (47 and 43, resp). But here's the thing. Both are significantly weaker than their scroll counterparts. Try genociding a Cyberdemon. It almost never works (<5% ... often, 0%). Compare to the scroll (seems to work like 90%). Even with the spells, you will want to stockpile the scrolls as well for the end game.

[3] Polymorph Vampire? Maybe. But I lose almost 100 hp in the transformation and pick up light vulnerability. Nah! +3 speed hardly seems worth the effort.

[4] Death Ray? Totally broken ... in the wrong sense. I source dived this once, and monsters over some ridiculously low level automatically resist. I can't remember what, but I think it was something like level 20. So, gray and brown snakes are susceptible. Everything else is immune. Malediction does way more damage and is way more useful then Death Ray.

[5] Esoteria? A good utility spell. Having access to *id* is always appreciated.

[6] Nether Wave? You're joking, right? 1d120 points of damage for 50sp with a 14% fail. That's 1.2 damage per spell point. It is a line of sight spell, though, but I'm never in a situation where I might want to use it. Must be a play style thing.

[7] Darkness Storm? We'll see when I can cast it (CL44 with a 24% fail makes that never ... or at CL49 maybe). It only does 200hp, so why bother?

No, death is a realm with 3 awesome spells: Vampirism True, Hellfire and Wraithform. The last two are CL50 spells, and still very hard to cast. (I chose this to use Hellfire against the Chemist, but that is a special situation and we'll see how it works out). Vampirism True, if that were the only spell in the entire death realm, would make it worthwhile, however.

Death is a realm with 2 good spells: Genocide and Mass Genocide. But the fact that scrolls work so much better is annoying. Imagine if the life healing spell only healed 50hp while potions did 300hp. It's something like that ...

Death is a realm with 22 totally useless spells. I mean totally useless :) Am I missing something? Oh, yes, Restore Life is OK. It just saves an equipment slot, though. Nothing earth shattering. And its CL44 ...

Well, back to the slaughter. I just wanted to play a Craft Warrior anyway (with Vampirism True and Hellfire for the Chemist)! Plus, every time I play a Life/Craft priest the game seems waaaaay too easy :)

I've been playing without sound resistance for a long time ... I did not realize that Thalkettoth had it! Well, maybe I'll kill dragons a little while longer. I'm half tempted to go for some reavers, but I am not sure that I am powerful enough. I was also waiting for Boromir to sustain strength (for reavers) but Anarion covers that for me as well!

Better sleep on it ... Those reavers are fast and deadly.

Its Reaver Time! Dun. Dun dun da dun! Reaver Time! I'm not stopping til I'm dead, or suitably equipped with Diatribe, Anabasis and Tulkas.

Actually, I remember being a fan of Darkness Storm.. it has a pretty huge radius, is available significantly earlier than Hellfire, and is much more reliable than Vampirism True (which automatically fails against all undead). Also, Nether Wave has huge range, and was the only way I could beat Spawning Pits... although I generally agree that it's not worth the SP.

Oh, and where is your Great Wyrm pet? Having one is vital for reliable healing ;-)

For a priest, Darkness Storm comes at CL44 with a significant fail rate (about 24%). That assumes maximal wisdom. A mage is better suited, getting the spell at CL40 with what amounts to a 22% lower fail rate. For me, I seemed to fly up the levels with melee, but maybe that's because I was farming Sky Drakes and their summons until CL49, and farming reavers until now. The spells just don't hold a candle to melee. But this is also Entroband, where melee is slightly (?) broken, I think. At the moment, I could probably cast Darkness Storm 7 times for 1400hp of damage before running out of sp ... Or I could melee for 2 rounds for similar effect without even breaking a sweat :)

I agree about Nether Wave in the spawning pits ... I think BDSM might be better than Rohirrim, so I'm considering the quest, at least. But other than that, playing with passwall means there is never any reason to fight more than one monster at a time ... and that with good anti-summoning tactics to boot. Though, I confess the reavers are somewhat tricky as I am using Destruction to clear Vecna and that makes it hard to find contiguous walls for my tactics.

So, here is:

Probably, I have enough to continue. I wouldn't mind at least one decent shooter, though! Finding Diatribe after only 30 reavers is a bit lucky, so I should not complain :)
