Adam, you got me interested in the Mirror Master! I hope you don't mind if I play one too.

This character had a marvelous experience in Doom Quest I, picking up a Ring of Chaos Resistance, Hagen (+3 speed and stealth) and Corwin (+4 con and regen). The last two might even be end game items for the mirror master ... well, maybe not Hagen, but certainly Corwin is. Wow.

So, getting bored at DL24, I decide to gingerly tip toe down to DL30 to burgle some stat potions with my Legendary[10] stealth, when *BAM*, first trip to the depth nets a greater patter vault. There were maybe 100+ monsters inside that I could not handle. Well, if I weren't a spectre, I could not have even gotten into the vault, so, lucky stroke number 1. I'm in, but I entered a 1hp given the long trek thru walls as a wraith, and I have yet to find any stone to mud! So, I forgot to take a screen shot, but its the kind of vault with nice areas in the four corners, a little bewildering 4 pattern piece in the middle, and lots of diagonal trap filled, monster infested areas to navigate thru. Nasties included a Bloodthirster, a Dracolisk, and many more. I didn't pay too much attention to remembering all the nasties, as everything was so far beyond my little drips of light and shard balls.

The SW corner I got to and cleared using plentiful teleport other, but there was nothing of note down there save a rand art 25lb suit of armor, which I left behind. Next, the NW corner. Now this was tough, as the Dracolisk was guarding the way, and it resists teleportation. I thought I might try anyway as nether doesn't bother me, and I was double resisting fire thanks to my ring of flames. It worked! Surprising, and a good thing too as this corner had both Hammerhand and Jack of Shadows (as well as Eorlinas, but who cares about that?).

2 down. 2 to go. The problem with the eastern half of the vault is Gachapin, who is still way beyond my powers to deal with, and unfortunately is wide awake thanks to a mystic that woke up only to be killed by a sea of hydras. What to do? What to do? I could cut my losses, having received two spectacular artifacts. I decided to try my hand at teleportation. The topography was such that I could lure Gachapin out of line of site, and step unto the dividing wall to teleport all his hydras away. I then tried 3 times to teleport him away, but he really does resist. Eventually, I managed to get him to steal from me, but that left me standing on a wall, surrounded by 4 hydras behind and 2 in front. I teleported away the 2 and front, and gained access to the easter half of the vault! Yay! I'm down to like 120hp and 30sp when somehow, I fat fingered and cast the wrong spell, and teleported myself outside the vault. Hydras everywhere. A dracolisk. The level is infested. In the end, a stupid pattern ghost nearly did me in. I was almost out of CCW, out of sp, no offense, nothing to do but recall. Thankfully, the recall kicked in before I died.

The level had 10 artifacts on it (excluding random arts), and I missed a whopping 7 of them. I got what I consider to be the 2 best, though. The misses that hurt are Arvedui and Rohirrim, as I am still waiting for simple armor of resistance and either of those would have worked nicely. Oh well ... I'm still alive :)

I probably could do the Cloning Pits, but I find it is better to hold off on that quest when playing a pure spellcaster. Its just too easy to run out of mana (aka "offense") when getting mobbed. But my stealth should make that less of an issue. And what glorious stealth. I was running at Legendary[25] until the BM stocked a ring of con +4 then netted my something like 100hp. I felt like I had to go for that, even if it means I am only Legendary[15] stealth :( One of my 7 missed artifacts was Balli Stonehand, another big miss as it has +3 con, stealth, and base resistance (so I could swap for stealthy armor).

So I've been hanging near the top of the Anti-melee cave, exploring each level and then recalling back to sell the loot. I think the Spectre has got to be the best racial choice for the mirror master ... Passwall is nearly an insane combo when it comes to setting up mirrors for my key damage output. But, the advantage is only temporary, I think. A high level mirror master can do just as well with judicious use of mirror tunneling (dimension door).

I've had a few more vaults, but nothing like that first one. I'm just waiting for the RNG to slam me with another impossible level ... and probably that means I should get the lead out and do the Cloning Pits already ;)

I decided to take my own advice, and breezed thru the Cloning Pits. The first Bokrug woke up and summoned a Vampire Lord while I was finishing off the archpriest random monster. Hey! I thought I was stealthy. But this was not a big deal, and I quickly dispatched them both.

I could not figure out a good way to deal with the Its, Jurts, Dagons, and Gachapins one at a time without waking multiples up with my super ray. So I just set up my max mirrors behind the two that always line up, and took all three of each on at once. Stuff gets destroyed this way, but aside from stat potions, I think only artifacts interest me now (Occasionally, you will get a ring of speed from one of these guys, and I would miss that!). My staves of speed were ready kindling in there, especially as I have yet to find a single !ResistHeat. I burned a !Resistance for the Queen ants just for fire resistance ... talk about squandering resources!

So, here's a quick equipment shuffle to max out my Int, and that's it for today. Mirror masters are fun!

This is a pretty quick post after my last one ... but I just picked up two really nice new artifacts. The first is 'lungmoth', weighing in with +4 Int and Speed, and 3 choice resistances. I was beginning to set my sights on Numenor, but now I think I will need to wait. This came from Sangahyando, hardly a worthy opponent!

The second came from Malekith, who was also incredibly weak for this character. Nether attacks? Pshaw! He dropped what is really a warrior's shield: 'Roaring Lightning Dragon'. It weighs in at a whopping 16lbs, but also has shards resistance, and freakin' cold immunity. For that last attribute alone, I think I need to wear it!

I'm still working the Anti-melee cave, looking for the remnants of that very large vault that Esperon recently cleared. Maybe he missed something that I can use?

Look, Ma! No rings of Con!!!
I like this part of the game, as equipment frequently shuffles as you find incrementally better and better stuff. When Judge Death dropped a RoS +7, I lost the first ring of con. Then, when the BM stocked a ring of acid, I lost the second. For some reason, I like this silly 'Rose Banquet'. Of course, getting a !Con in the BM, and getting my DL36 and DL38 random rolls to both go to Con helps immeasurably.

And !NewLife? I was stupid, and drank the first one I found. Why on earth would I do a silly think like that? Before: Str 18/80, Int 18/80, Con 18/100, Life 97%. That's really good because it is *not* really bad. I mean, I'm used to 18/70 Con with life about 83%, right? Well, I improved. Str in now 18/130 (no biggie), Int is 18/90, Con is 18/110 and Life is 111%! Lucky, because I've had so many characters totally screw things up by drinking early New Life. Now, I just need to find stat potions, which are so incredibly, unbelievably rare that it isn't even funny ...

I've pushed down to DL49 of Anti-melee, and wow, things really picked up. An epic battle with Hastur who was quickly out summoning me with things like a Nycademon and a Lesser Balrog. These crowds force me to rely on a single strength Seeker Ray, which feels weak to me. (I just realized that the Illusion spell might have worked better ... Next time). Eventually, I moved the battle into some corridors where I could focus one on one. That same level had Glaurung, Garm, and many monsters that are now AMHD strength. For the most part, I fight one on one after some decent setup. Monsters snore sleepily as I strategically position my mirrors, preparing them for a rude awakening!

Rather than my normal stair climbing strategy, I'm now recalling back and forth between the town and the top of the Dragon's Lair. I'm also clearing each level. This is my third go, and while I got a vault on my first go, it was tiny and the level was not special. My goal is to gain as much power and experience as possible before the inevitable killer vault, which will be nasty indeed at this depth.

I've easily handled Nidhogg, Bramd, Brand, Nyogtha and the King in Yellow, all on my first sighting of them. I've killed an Ice Wyrm and one Hell Wyrm, too. But mostly, its been lots of mid-power monsters, such as Ancient Black Dragons. For some reason, I am now having much better luck with stat potions, getting 8 or so in the last hour (having gotten 3 in the previous 8 hours in the dungeon ... This is not counting the BM which has been somewhat accommodating).

Brand stiffed me, and this makes me quite sad :( I can't think of a more useless shooter for this character than Bard!

Given how slow I'm playing Esperon, I've got a sneaking suspicion you might overtake me. Well, good luck regardless, seems you're doing well!

I'll never catch you ... plus, you are playing a lazy cyclops, which is a very difficult challenge. Me, I'm playing a patient spectre, which is a trifle munchkin-esque ... Anyway, I'm giving Larry Logrus another look.
