This attempt feels far poorer than my previous attempt. Cleared out the farms, sewers, and troll caves so far. My ammo tells me to pay a trip to the marshes next.

Cleared a path through the Misty Mountains, will probably save the Woodman's village next.

As an aside, in an earlier run through (on windows laptop) I had very strange UI issues when going through the Brandywine path... my windows seemed stuck on the upper left corner of the map. Don't know what was causing that.

Anyway, pushing on with my middle earth tourism.

Went through the Woodman's village and Marsh quests. Got a randart boots which gives +3 str and bod, wahoo! I think I'll try Moria next.

I was able to get through Moria. Azog's escort gave me more trouble than he did-- lots of orc priests casting fear, and I hadn't thought to stock up on !oheroism. Found my second artifact, the trusty phial. The rest of my equipment though is pretty bad, thank goodness for the randart boots.

I decided to go after Mirkwood next, though now with =oFA, am considering the barrows. If I had found a -o door and stair detection, I'd probably do it, but don't really relish stumbling around levels 4-12 trying to find stairs.

I made a run at Moria but got petrified at a relatively low level (~10), I think by a lesser crypt creep. Petrification was not cured by a cure fear potion, but I was able to recall to the surface. Once there though I still couldn't move and the game was effectively over. Seems like a bug, unless I was actually turned to stone, but that shouldn't happen as such a low level. Anyone know how to guard against petrification?

Had a very tense but ultimately successful excursion in Mirkwood. On the town level, I was out in the open with several gravity hounds-- unfun. And elven royalty is a royal pain. Burned through lots of resources (including a ?o*Destruct*). I'm so glad that temp speed is plentiful-- went through about 7 in those last two levels (picking up 2 in the town level).

Then, took a breather in the barrowdowns. That was actually relaxing, and got some nice elven armor there.

Currently making a desparate charge up the tower again, which is proving difficult. Just got a helm of seeing, but am low in supplies. I think I'll take a bit of a breather descending down the final pass in the east before finishing the tower.

Travel advisory-- Conditions on weathertop extremely muggy, with tight-packed conditions resulting in an avalanche of dragons and other annoying monsters with tricky LOS issues.

Redfang pass by contrast is mostly clear with the occasional rain of orcs and ogres, which are mostly fodder.

Seriously, I think I'll pass on weathertop-- didn't even realize that I had passed it (disconnected stairs makes it confusing and the crown is wide open and dangerous). The loot was also extremely poor.

Almost done with the pass now. After that, I think I'll see how Isenguard is holding up, or try the lonely mountain.

Seems like some professional adventuring here. :) With 100 dungeon levels, a certain NPC (wisely not yet released by you, I think) was the main scare of Wheathertop. With 60 dungeon levels, suddenly being 30 levels deep is scary by itself and the loot looks puny for the risk, indeed. I suppose Wheathertop should be made shallower and shorter, so that low-lever players may want to risk sneaking up for the loot.

Actually, like an unprofessional adventurer, I tried to trigger the guardian of Weathertop :)

Here is what happened in detail-- I been resorting to using the stairs in Weathertop when the heat got too bad. Fortunately, there are plenty of stiars, even if it weren't disconnected.

When I got to the crown of Weathertop, I had miscounted and thought I had one more level. I also noticed I was wide out in the open (of course in retrospect, but I didn't realize it at the time, and there was some serious heat bearing down on me. I recalled, then used the stairs for good measure.

I was very surprised when I ended up in the wilderness-- and then got pulled back by the recall.

I got out, regrouped, restocked, and recalled back to the crown. I killed everything there (slowly), but there was no guardian. All I found was the ranger cache. And I got my last ?o*Destruction* burned (my fire ants) for my trouble. **sniff**.

I'm beginning to realize that there is a difference between "fought through" and "emerge victorious". I seem to have triggered it in redfang as well. Can I go back and find the guardian after I "fought through" and then later "emerge victorious" or am I stuck now? Also, does recalling yield "fought through" every time or only sometimes?

I suspect also that I missed a little bugger in the Big Cavern and one of the three trolls in the Troll Cave.

Unwise. But he's triggered by discovering his master's intentions in yet another part of the world.

;D Sliding down the outer wall of the tower can be quite disorienting. :)

> Can I go back and find the guardian after I "fought through" and then later "emerge victorious"

Yes, (almost?) always. Emerge, only means all guardians killed. Through, means you got to the other side, but not all guardians (but at least one?). There are some more.

> I suspect also that I missed a little bugger

A little sneak, shallow in the Misty Mountains, yes. I'm not sure you want to meet him, though. :)

Dawdled around Isenguard a bit, but I hate towers. Decided that Smaug would be easier :P

I didn't quite realize what would happen to Lake Town when I strolled into the mountain, and that really harshed my mellow (it's quite a long trek to Rivendell). Still, with Taratol handy and some planning (including a horn of sense dragon that Smaug toasted when I switched to regen for the actual battle), Smaug did not prove too difficult against a potion amped Forge Giant.

So now I have decisions. Several new areas have opened up, am not sure what to try next. I might head down to Isenguard to finish that up before I try out Fangorn ablaze (never did get Radagast's warning). Or I might seem what the five armies are up to. Leaning towards Isenguard right now, as I think I may not get a chance later.

I hadn't set Fangorn ablaze yet, so Isenguard was available. So, a furious charge up ended in an anticlimatic battle with Big Bird. Inyare decided to see what happens when you drop an avian 31 floors. The results weren't pretty.

For the tower, I decided to forge my own weapon, buying a completely non-magical scythe of slicing and pimping it up. Is it intentional that these weapons can be enchanted up to +30 damage? If so, hot damn, which I knew about that. Only three blows, but they are *sweet*. I put vampiric on it as well, not sure how that works. Does it drain hp like in quickband or gumband, or does it only drain mana? Do I get hp for each damage I do, or just some percentage? I'll experiment, pretty much just got it set up.

I think I'll back track to see how the five armies are doing and then torch Fangorn.

Well, tonight's session went a bit haywire.

First decided to take on the Battle of the Five Armies. Wasn't sure what the deal was, so I made sure that all the orcs were dead. Remember, only you can start forest fires.

I killed the unique there, but only cleared it. Next time I won't bother being a slow acting genocide scroll ;) Loot from Erebor was ok, but the artifact bow was actually a ?oAcquisition.

Then set Fangorn ablaze. After reviewing the options, decided to go after Siege of Hornberg, which was extremely frustrating. Some of the "up" stairs (higher in the tower) dumped me outside the tower (though on a higher level). The first three of four times this happened, I didn't understand what was happening and "fell" back to level 22. By the last time, I was wise to it and stair-scummed whenever that happened until I was back in the tower.

On the next to last level, I was nearly cursed to death by templars. I tried using ?oEscape, assuming it was like TL. I didn't expect it to have a time delay (or perhaps I was just confused?) At any rate, I ended up teleported up a level to level 40. I didn't see any guardian, but still get the emerge victorious message. I checked my unique history, and I certainly did not kill a high level unique at the siege.

Andrew-- I used three runes to get lightning brand on the scythe, then took it to one of the stores in rivendell to get it a vampriric brand. The scythe of slicing started +0,+0, and I used mainly store services to get it to about +9,+29. A few scrolls of *enchant* got it up to its current level. The effect of the vampiric brand seems to be subtle (not resulting in huge hp gains when attacking), so I am on the lookout for another big damage die weapon to try to enchant up.

To get that double branded weapon, you first have to insert three "elemental" runes in a weapon, to get a simple branded ego weapon. For some reason the flag ("xtra1") that is used in the code for marking modified weapons is deleted in the process, so you can use a scroll/service of branding on the weapon. This sounds like a bug, so you have to make it up with your conscience whether to use it ;)

The high +dam enchants are intentional OTOH: your maximum damage (x*y with an xdy weapon) determines the amount of +dam you can enchant a weapon to.

To be honest, despite a character that in many ways put to shame many of the ones I've had in other variants, I've never felt in control in the way that I have been elsewhere. Part of that I think is how easily it is to get cursed in various ways, and escape seems harder-- I'm finding ?oEscape to be unreliable, ?o*Destruct* to not give as much safety, and levels denser so that teleport seems dangerous. Also, attributes of the character (like the huge HP total certainly make me drop my guard from my usual fairly paranoid self.

The question is: Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I think I need to tone down the frequency of disease from where it is currently. I'm also going to add in a few more escapes - I'm not convinced at the moment wther oa ?oEscape is any different to ?oStairCreation and I'm thinking of adding more effects which provide partial healing while doing something else as well.

Other than that - the level density has felt fine at lower levels - I could stop the scaling up of monster numbers at higher levels which would help here. But that 'not feeling in control' is straight from the original rogue and one of the goals of the variant. I'm interested in knowing whether it is sustainable and enjoyable over the length of the game...

I think it is mostly good--

Although this variant can damage a character quickly, the damage isn't so fast that it is instakill-- there is usually time to react. Part of it is also that this variant is just a bit different from other vairants, so that there are new tricks to pick up and old standbys don't work quite as well (such as anti-summoning tunnels on levels that are wide open, or ?o*Destruct*).

There are a couple things though that seem troublesome to me: ?oEscape often just fail for me (I get a message that the ground shakes, but do not TL), the relative difficulty of finding FA, and (unrelated to difficulty) the struggle to find ?oRecall early on. Disease does not bother me. One thing that may be problematic are monster spells that pierce through resistances. This is not really a problem for stuff like blind and confuse, but I'm a little worried about paralysis-- I'd be really kinda bummed if I lost a character who had FA, but got hit with a paralysis spell at full HP and never got another swing. Fortunately, that scenario never really got close to happening, so maybe it is rare enough to not be such a big deal.

I also don't like how it is easy to run out of ?oRecall. Eventually you get rods of recall, so it's not a problem, but there's a time where you live in constant fear of a water or fire attack burning up your last one and being stuck. Or even worse, recalling back to the surface with your last one and finding that there isn't a single shop carrying them.

I've also never been paralyzed with Free Action. I'm not convinced it's possible.

You can be paralysed with FA at least when you get overloaded with fear. This happened to me even when I had fear resist, once.

Re FA: I take it you never accumulated enough !FA to make it worthwhile to use them. Piercing of resistance is in for 2 reasons - firstly it makes it still worthwhile trying to improve your saving throw when you have good resistance coverage; and (as I guess you realised) most effects such as blindness make the game more tactically interesting and I don't want players missing out on this in the late game.

It's worthwhile noting that paralysis never stacks in Unangband - if you are paralyzed, you cannot be paralyzed further.

Re ?oRecall: Most of the early dungeons are designed so that they can be completed in one run. I'm surprised that this is an issue - especially with Fireproofing and Waterproofing, and scroll stacks, but will defer to your experience on this. ?oDeepDescent will be coming - which should be a great escape from towers, which tend to be the longer dungeon slogs.

Barrowdowns will be split into two dungeons at some point - with a shallower guardian on the easier dungeon.

If I'm being careful I don't find Maggot's farm to be completeable in one run. Especially with this character, I may need some time to find something to throw, mushrooms, or if I'm really lucky a {great} weapon.
