The most obvious suggestion is to watch those hydras - I used to plow right on through them, but lately they've been giving me undue trouble... IIRC they only drop $ so they aren't worth engaging anyway.

Enchant your bow, and use a longbow. A +0 shortbow does essentially no damage.
Keep the torch refueled enough for radius 2 light.
Use Rods of Light, if you don't have ESP, and if you find them. (Same for illumination.)
Use _dEvil if you are at dl 27+ without FA. (Ghasts are far more deadly than other early paralyzers.)

Try a Rogue (High-Elf or Kobold.) Detection and stealth are more important than damage.
