Only been playing Angband (V) for about a month, and it's my first roguelike. This is my first character beyond experience level 13, and I felt like saving it now because I have a bad feeling...

By the way, an upgrade to my version mid-save made some of the options misreport, I think. I'm almost sure I have preserve on, because I've found about 6 artifacts and never had a special feeling...

Any comments welcome, especially as to what to do next. Currently I'm just hanging around, clearing levels with decent feelings, and popping up to sell crap (like the crap in my inventory now) and to try to buy stat potions.

I wouldn't go much past 1700-1800' until you get rPoison and get your stats closer to max (especially constitution). You should be finding plenty of stat potions, so you shouldn't have to buy them at the black market.

You'll start running into big poison breathers (drolems, AMHD, greater basilisks) a little bit later. They can deal on the order of 500-800 poison damage in one breath, so rPoison is pretty handy.
http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7522 <-- poison breath death

Regarding gear - I would sell your shield of rlit and swap in your shield of resistance in your home. I would also buy another staff of teleport and carry 2 staves on you at all times; monsters that blind on hit can be bad trouble if your only source of teleport is a scroll or a book. You might also consider wearing your +3 wisdom amulet and leaving your sustenance amulet in your inventory as a swap for fighting undead - if the +3 wisdom helps your spell failure.

If you don't get teleport other in ethereal openings, a wand or three of teleport other can be a lifesaver.

Relying on a single rod of recall can be a little bit dangerous, since it can be stolen if you have low dex. I think 18/50 is the cutoff for perfect theft-protection, so you're not too far off. Just something to keep in mind.

Why are your scrolls of recharging inscribed 'indestructible'?

Thanks for the help!

I had rPoison with an old Elvenkind armor, but the AC was just too low to keep it. [5, +9] or something. Guess I'll have to look for something else soon.

I've been finding a lot of staves of teleport. I'll keep the next one I find, unless I find rBlind first. I haven't been using the one I have all that much, but the last time I did was quite important.

I don't think I've seen a single non-unique that stole anything from me since about 450', but it's worth keeping in mind for the sake of my recalling, thanks.

And I think the {indestructible}-labeled scrolls were another weirdness caused by the version upgrade. It's definitely not an inscription I did. I also had some {indestructible} books of Chants and Blessings, which didn't stack with newer ones, so I had to wait around until the older ones were, um, destroyed.

Armor is nice, but I would rather first have means of escape and detection, resists, hp, and damage. In that order. rPoison is necessary much earlier than rSound, although both are eventually required.

It's very unlikely that your rod of recall would be stolen. But it is possible - and where there's a way, there's a master thief just waiting to exploit a distracted adventurer..

You can unsubscribe an item with } if it's a player inscription, although I'm guessing it's not. Do you know what version you started with?

Best thing you can learn is when to pick a fight, and when to stay in a fight. Unfortunately, the best lessons are dying over and over.

Gorlim is just plain evil. He's one of the nastiest uniques at his depth. Next time you'll know to stay away ;)
