My second attempt with this thing. I just found this flail, apparently a randart as it causes earthquakes and I don't see anything in artifact.txt matching this. It's powerful, but the constant earthquakes are pretty annoying.

My turn count is up in the 700k range, because I kept scumming for !speed around level 2. Also due to mining.

Wow, you are powerful. You don't need the Pick any more.

Played just a little more. I found Cammithrim on the same level as the flail (an "excellent" level), but I think I should stick with my Gloves of Power because it gives me 3 blows. I could use the extra light radius from Cammithrim though: the earthquakes make everything chaotic and eat up items :/

I just WOR'd back down to level 29... a superb level. (This is without autoscum too.)

With this weapon I feel pretty powerful, and I've got rConf. But elemental breaths and wound-causing spells can still hurt a lot. And rFear would be nice to have.

You'll get that next Clevel (as I recently found out...)

Up to level 34, at dungeon level 45. Observations:

1. Certain monsters have attacks that hurt a lot even though they aren't very high level. I'm finding myself quite wary of packs of Giant Paladins (because of their curses, though I'm resisting those more now) and Colbrans (quick movers and "shoot sparks" can hurt).

2. The last 10 dungeon levels have been boring. I found some randarts but they were totally boring... one armor had nothing but 3 base resistances.

3. "blank your mind" is a horrible attack and shouldn't be in the game. It's mainly an attack on the player... i.e. the human playing the game, not the character. I forgot which monster did it to me this time.

Stat potions seem hard to come by. Maybe I have dived past the optimal statgain levels already, but I can't be bothered to scum for things now. I wish I had speed...

Now I'm at lev45 and got this message:

"Proud warlords struggle in this land; here, there are no neutrals."

Scary stuff? I suppose I will try this level without source diving for spoilers :)

Also, this is what that earthquake flail is:
The Flail of Marod
It increases your strength by 3.
It increases your tunnelling ability by 3.
It slays giants.
It provides resistance to acid.
It allows you to see invisible monsters and induces earthquakes.
It cannot be damaged by acid, electricity, fire, or frost.

The earthquakes are too chaotic to use as a primary, and slay giant is useless. But it digs real good and could help me escape sometimes ;)

This warlords level is tough and I didn't bring enough supplies. It's too open. I think I'll try some earthquakes now...

But that's all the time I have for Angband just now.

It turned out that the Thunder Giant in the screenie was the last of the group that mobbed me at the start. The !enlightenment was a godsend. I holed up in one of the buildings "pulling" the nearby monsters, and then picked up another !speed and !healing in the building to the south. As long as its 1 on 1 I can handle these guys. No uniques so far.

Also picked up a Heavy Crossbow of Accuracy, a !con, and this:
The Torque of Boromir (+0,+18) (+2)

Now this level is FUN :) Oangband seems stingy with the items sometimes, but that makes it sweeter when you actually get something :)

Having played ToME a bit recently, I like O's item stinginess - either I've been lucky or the item quality around 2000' is decent, with less junk than most other variants...

...on the downside, I'm not used to only having one set of shops and having to go to 2000' with 4 (weak) CCWs and 2 ?TLs is a bit of a challenge, to say the least...

On 24.9.2007 22:53 tigen wrote:
I finished off that level... had problems with several summoning monsters including Lorgan, who summoned Vargo among others.

Yeah, I'm realizing that healing is the major problem. I've been stocking the ?TLs and things in my home because of the inconsistent shop availability. But CCWs are so weak (and I can't even get them half the time) and !Healing is hard to find. Right now I have no healing items at all.

It's not balanced.

I got lucky with a stash of about 19 healing potions in the black market (when I could afford them too), however that supply is down to the last 3 or 4 now. How I wish there was a merchant like in FA to sort out all the consumables I'm lacking. As well as healing I have no source of speed (other than the Fury speciality) and *ID* is also very scarce (and how I hate those amnesia attacks!).

On 25.9.2007 22:07 tigen wrote:
Still going. *thump thump*. (sorry.)

I had a couple near-death instances, closest when receiving a "mortal wound" and not carrying any healing. (I deserved to die there.) But a staff of curing was lying in a pile of loot in the next room. Managed to kill Fundin Bluecloak and Smaug who both appeared in a sort of mini-vault.

Now I'm in this vault, with a blue dragon nest also in the level:

But I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow so I won't be able to finish this game anytime soon.

Looking good. I nearly lost my char to Scatha: double move of an adjacent breath attack for around 470HP followed by (thankfully) a failed spell - another breath or melee attack at that point would have killed me. I swiftly TL'd rather than risk anything else. Now if O had tiles I would have realised that it was Scatha rather than an Ancient White and would not have waded straight in.

I don't think I've read of deeper kills than Smaug (or Fundin) so you may well have the lead.

Crikey - I was happy with getting Uldor as a kill and that nearly finished me off. If anyone beats Fundin, I'll be impressed - I've always found him more of a challenge than other uniques at a similar level (I've never found Smaug or Scatha to be too much of a problem, once prepared).

Question: does O have a "monster list" window option - showing you which monsters are visible? It's a lifesaver with FAA but I've not spotted it with O yet...

On 26.9.2007 16:05 Psi wrote:
I hate Fundin too and that guy is fast. I'll be waiting for some speed items before I try him.

I haven't found a visible monster list window (and I have looked). If there's something I've missed I'll be delighted to know.
