Hereward was inspired by a character I found on the ladder who attempted to be a Warper who only used actual Warper spells. That character was a sling-user. Hereward on the other hand is a warrior, albeit not a very strong one (I've taken the no non-Warper spells policy to the ultimate extreme here: no God Spells, no Water for Ent's Potion, no Necromancy or FF Mindcraft, just Magic Device, and the three Warper schools).

About the only thing going for Hereward for most of the game is that he is a master of the quick hit-and-run (often using Recall to swap with the princess to get protection of glass walls while he heals up). Now that he's got Vorpal Blade and some extra attack rings, he's getting slightly more respectable, though not much. So far, so good anyway.
