This is Frodo, the only adopted child of Bilbo, the Hobbit Burglar. Certainly a black ship of the entire Hobbiton, fleeing the Shire with his ring (a Malachite Ring) and almost no other possesions. Stats distributed mostly uniformly, but with care to get a second throw and +1 speed. With Very Bad fighting the Broad Sword will not find any use for a long time. Some throwing items will urgently be needed for survival.

You might want to try carrying a throwing weapon instead of your broadsword in that slot. Good luck!

Thanks! Unfortunately, it's hard to get any weapons in Hobbiton, so when Frodo decided to become a warrior he went to Bree (where he stayed for so long that some apparently consider it his "Home") and was given a huge Broad Sword, lots of Orcish Spirits, a very uncomfortable leather armor and no instruction as to how to use them, whatsoever. Let's hope he can get something more familiar back in Hobbiton, before engaging in any serious adventure...

Try wearing the studs on the outside.... it makes the armour a little more comfortable.

Oh, that was it! Much better now. It settles the question whether Frodo should sell the sword or the armor to get some money for shopping. Let's see if the money from the sword will be enough ... 166 gold. Unfortunately no daggers nor darts in the Small Goods Store, so the money may prove quite useless.

Oops, the Frodo's ring appears to be cursed.

On 19.1.2007 18:26 Bandobras wrote:
Frodo bought out everything that can be used for throwing, that is 10 Iron Shots, 4 Flasks of Oil and even several Wooden Torches (not well balanced, but good damage). He also managed to find somewhere 98 Arrows, in case he will find any bow in the dungeon (no launchers at all in the shops and no other non-ego ammo). However, no preparation for an adventure is complete without a sizable stock of food and beverage, so he went to Farmer Maggot's Farm with 2 AU left and a good plan.

Maggot was in the fields, but he left his farmhouse (almost) open so Frodo, without grumbling, decided to take the arduous task of finding and packing all the food and drinks upon himself and pay when the farmer returns. The pack slows him down now, but every warrior knows that it's better to fight at -1 speed than fainting through hunger.

There is an big hill on one side of the courtyard with a door that, although shut, looks very inviting and seems to lead to some sizable tunnels. It's now close to midday and Maggot is known for working late. Should Frodo wait for the farmer to pay for the food, explore the tunnels while wating or go on to Bree and pay a bigger sum after he returns rich from his adventure?

On 20.1.2007 00:20 Bandobras wrote:
Frodo, being a decent Hobbit, decides to stay and wait for Maggot. Perhaps, in addition to paying for his food, he will be able to get some nice throwing weapon from the friendly farmer? It may prove difficult, but he has a plan, again. An addional problem is the ring, which turns out to be of Teleportation.

On 20.1.2007 14:09 Bandobras wrote:
As the sun set, Maggot appeared, tired and somewhat sad. Frodo having some time to think it over, decided to put all food other than Rations of Food in the farmhouse and show them to the farmer only after the deal is made. Maggot was annoyed to see a stranger on his land, but his light begun to flicker, so he aksed Frodo for some oil. Frodo promptly thrown a flask of oil, which caught fire off the Maggot's lantern and fell on the grass. The grass and the bushes caught fire and Frodo looked horrified (from the safe spot in the Farmhouse door) as Farmer's clothes caught fire, too, and then the smoke covered the scene.

Then, as the fire wall walked past the farmhouse, Frodo run out to help the Farmer. He turned out to have lost only four stars of his health, did not want any help, was too strong and infuriated to begin any negotiations with and yelled at poor Frodo to leave his land. Then the ring kicked in, sending Frodo to the other side of the fire wall, with no safe spot to hide except for the entrance to the tunnels under the hill. Frodo entered the tunnels before the fire managed to scorch him and, thinking about the firestorm outside, he thought about the once exciting and ominous tunnels "What a boring place.". However, the place smelled of food and drink, so it was surely worth exploring.

Now, take it easy... Remember, Frodo, you are a beginner warrior... A Blue ooze spotted and only the third Iron Shot manages to hit it. Fortunately, it kills it and fortunately, none breaks. A Cave Lizard and a Blue Mushroom later I have to choose my first stat increases. My plan is to get all as high as possible, except WIS and CHA, which will end a bit over 18/50. INT will be useful to smartly throw weapons so that they do not break and for disarming for trap-setting (my only hope currently to overcome strong opponents, in particular the Dunlending). Now I choose DEX and CON to make melee reasonable as soon as possible. Both increase above my expectations. Great! The ring really helps with unconnected rooms (some are connected by corridors but through walls with no doors.

Just as my Iron Shots have run out (still on DL3, the first under-hill level of the Farm), I've found a room with burning torches (good against tough monsters) and then one with lots of linked chain (spikes are necessary against mushrooms, because torches only fly short distances). I was also lucky to find Brown Mushrooms for the final fight (or final trap-setting). Here is Frodo with piles of torches and spikes on the stairs to DL4.

Reached CL 5. Increased DEX and CON again. Ha! Now I'm able to kill jackals and fruit bats in melee! Yay! Now it's time do go down to DL5 (I explore whole levels party due to the ring, partly because I'm so weak).

On 22.1.2007 01:38 redelmansidi wrote:
How can you move with all those spikes in your inventory? Don't you become exhausted all the time?

On 22.1.2007 17:03 wrote:
I do. Moreover, walking with -23 speed is quite unhelthy as it is. ;D But I drop the torches and spikes immediately after entering a new level and then pick up some every time the ring gets me close to the stash. I'm only a bit scared of starting close to a monster, but the joy of having more spikes and torches than any hobbit in history is worth the risk. And they are free! ;)
