Finished Farmer Maggot's dungeon this time. Wonder which way to go, Bree or Buckland. I'll have to take stuff from Hobbiton's home, it seems.

Lack of real ID is becoming interesting, I got several secretive items on me. Wonder what they do!

So, should I go Bree or Buckland?

On 5.8.2006 01:05 Mat wrote:
There is real id, but scrolls are rare. Best bet are the store services of id in many of the towns.
Until you find the correct bags (never happened for me), you'll find way more stuff you would want to id than you can carry. I counted like 7 different scrolls of semi id, you simple cannot carry them all..

Bree, definitely. Or maybe Buckland :)

Andrew has posted an intresting post on squelching on rgra. For me it works for most corpses, though for some reasons not for all of them.

Go to object knowledge screen ~4,
the press i to inscribe the object you want to ignore with =i. As an result every new created! object of that kind should not be visible on the screen. It is also possible to use =k, that would destroy on walk over, however as I have comfirm destroy on, I get way too many confirm messages with that.
So =i does the job best.

On the jellies: New dungeons bring new monsters :)
The dungeon guardians are always tough battles though...

You also seem to have the no regeneration disease!?! If so: it matters less for you with cure wounds ability, but the lost mana will hurt. Read Darfound's comments on how to get rid of it :)

On 8.8.2006 23:34 Mat wrote:
Almost forgot: a Cloak (Spiderthread)
is that an ego item or a randart. I guess Ego or it would be called the Cloak (Spiderthread) i guess. Do you know what it does yet? Also could you read runic magic on it if you find some scrolls ?

On 8.8.2006 23:45 pav wrote:
Will try the ignore, sounds exactly like what I want.

Haven't noticed the disease at all. Don't do much from the diseases, they pass away after a short while anyway.

The cloak is an ego, I cheated a looked it up in edit files first, but then I sacrificed *ID* scroll on it, to get the info in-game. You can see from the tables in the dump, that it gives res_shard and that's it. It also marks me as an animal, but I don't know what that means.

On the jellies: Yes I know, and I'm trying to get to the bottom of this dungeon as fast as possible, but I'm used to always clear whole level. Guess I'm gonna break this habit.

On 9.8.2006 00:16 pav wrote:
Well it's no good. =i hides the item from screen, but it still croaks when I step on it. and =k asks for confirmation.

Time to do some patching.

Few touches to the source, and now the corpses are no more. Bliss. http://angband.oook.cz/un-patches/un-totalhide.diff

While your solution is of course superiour to the original implemention, it has helped me breaking with a bad habit. While searching stacks, I used to walk on it, then check it with k-. Now I use the targeting mode instead. That will not show the hidden items, and it defenitly saves turns compared to what i did before. Especially important in the Isengard dungeon...

You'll soon notice that the regen disease , if that's what you have, doesn't go away after a short while. Was carrying it for 700k turns with Darfind!

On 9.8.2006 13:19 pav wrote:
700k turns? Ick! I noticed something is not right by now, HP is not regenerating. Annoying. Hmm, I'll try your two-diseases-one-cure approach. Or I could wait few levels and learn Cure Minor Disease prayer.

It's a little strange that there's no indication in the game that you're diseased. Only in chardump.

On 9.8.2006 16:14 Mat wrote:
yeah 700k turns, then he died :)
Feel free to wait for the spell, but i see a high chance that it uses the same code as the potion of cure minor disease and also won't work...

On 9.8.2006 19:45 pav wrote:
Cure Minor Disease prayer fixed the no regen disease. And the Great Goblin of Misty Mountains went down easily. Which is luck, as I runned out of recall scrolls.

Beorn down on second try. Tough bugger. What's next decent city? Rivendell stopped offering ID service in shop. :(

On 9.8.2006 20:24 Mat wrote:
Maybe Bree currently offers id?
You can go between the two very easy. If non of them offers id service, you're out of luck I guess. Laketown is the next city after finishing mirkwood.

Some more progress in Mirkwood, some more hackery in code. Enjoyable evening.

Black market have +3 speed sling for 9,688 gold, and fire immunity granting underwear for just 13,470 gold -- where's the catch? Surely elemental immunity can't be this cheap? Should I be getting it?

On 18.8.2006 01:01 Mat wrote:
What slot would underwear be?
Yes there are magic items with immunity, but immunity is overrated in my eyes. I'd chose speed or 3 cons or res confusion over immunity any day.
If you don't have anything better in that slot you sure should get it.

On 18.8.2006 01:38 andrewdoull@gmail.com wrote:
Speed is a lot cheaper than Angband. Fire immunity price is straight from the Angband artifact pricing code. I'm considering making the top end of items more expensive, to tempt players who'd otherwise end up with 10,000,000 gold or so...

It's a body armor. So the deal is, either +2 spped or fire immunity. I think I'll go for the immunity.

I have a feeling I'll need immunities backly in Un. I met only a handful of dragons so far, but every time I got hit by a breath, five or six items in my backpack took the damage. No help I had resistance. That's just too cruel to my equipment...

On 19.8.2006 12:05 andrewdoull@gmail.com wrote:
I've updated CVS to make resistance a lot more useful against monsters with weaker elemental blows. Downside is that high damage elemental attacks (eg from breathers) are more likely to cause inventory damage. Let me know how this goes.

Bottom of Mirkwood. The perfect game is suddenly falling apart. Brass monkeys are plenty, levels tend to get overrun by breeding frogs, means of item identification are joke, and most importantly, there is just no way I can get over Wood Elf King now. He's dealing me more damage than CCWs can ever heal.

What equipment are you using to buff yourself before the fight? If you can find some scrolls of Shielding, they give +50 ac/ +100 ac versus missile weapons which should help.

Alternately, you can kill the Barrow-Downs guardian and go an alternate route.

One resist acid item should protect your equipment from Brass Monkeys.

Hmm, Shielding scrolls. Seen a few in the game. Should the Sanctuary prayer... oh crap. Completely confused Sanctuary and Shielding! Hehe. My bad.

Will try Shielding scrolls, once I restock with CCWs. Will take a while.
